Hows about, for backgrounds it could go into a series of looped caverns, then maybe some wooden structures, like imagine scenes from metropolis, but with wood. then the boss stage could be a rustic clockworks city.

APPROVE ONLY THE BEST IDEAS; if you think something won't work, don't waste time on it, don't have your team members waste time on it, time is a very valuable commodity here.

DO NOT ACCEPT SUB-PAR WORK; accept only the best stuff from your team members, if they have to rework something or scrap something because it isn't right then they have to rework it or scrap it, EDN. Don't waste time or energy negotiating and don't stress about it if you hurt someones feelings, you are the one in charge.

BE CRITICAL; no, you don't need to be a jerk, just be difficult to please, find the flaws that are there and point them out to your artists, make them understand that you want the best that they can do and will settle for nothing less.

DO NOT CODDLE YOUR ARTISTS; they can handle it, if they can't they shouldn't be on your team.

BE ENTHUSIASTIC; yes, you can keep your team pumped and energized by appreciating the hard work that they put in.

BE RESPECTFUL; respect goes both ways, respect your team and they should respect you, if they don't you can kick their ass out.

YOU ARE THE BOSS; your word and opinion is the one that counts, make sure that your team knows that.

Finally; if you haven't yet, make the thread for your team.

Everyone is counting on you guys to make this project mind-breakingly awesome.

PS: There have been a few additions to some of the teams in the past few days. I expect teams to change and evolve as the project hums along, so check that news post if someone new shows up saying they are in the project and on your team.

I agree with everything here. I think it would help to us better crack that whip when we know exactly whats expected from us.

we need hard numbers.

1) what are the size dimensions for the game? Having a mix of sidescrolling and top down levels mean that game will have alot of dead space, basically would be a huge square.
2) how many minions per level?
3) How many Bosses/subosses are allowed?
4) how can complex can the bosses and subbosses Be? Obviously our bosses wouldnt have 5+ patterns like cave of wonders. so knowing how many are allowed would help rule out lamer patterns.
5) can we have individual cutscenes?
6) will effects and weapons be shared over the course of the levels? creating new upgrades based on each level and team ideas, could get messy for the programmer.

Alright, SteamPunk -Level, Uh- Alpha Go Team...

Time to set up a thread where we can pitch designs for our level, as well as discuss ways on how to make it it unique , yet cohesive.

The plan still stands that once a design is ok'd, it will more than likely be tweaked by one of the painter /illustrators of the group, to keep the aesthetics and details homo- homa... same.

All art for our level will be raster.

When ever possible , try and explain how you would like your enemy design to behave in the game. and explain their patterns and functions.
Glance at the outline from time to time, so you know the limitations of the player.

Also if you are not sure what steampunk is, this page here will give you the basics
Giving yourself realistic limitations to the mechanics actually forces you to be more creative!

ALRIGHT Go TEAM STEAM ROCKET.

[SHMUP] SteamPunk Level design,

Just for the record, if this thread is deleted immediately, it will be the third time after our first main thread was locked that we have tried to come back to NG. The mods delete our threads for no reason at all, they said we were welcome to the Clubs and Crews forum, and even said they would move the first thread there, however, all they did was lock it; ever since then they have deleted any thread here that we have made in an effort to return the PFN to its original home.

I didn't move the thread because I was told by admin it wasnt possible. If your first 3 attempts to create the fusion club had been deleted then you should've contacted me about it, since Im the one that gave you permission to set up here.

restart this thread, without those silly omission rules, and without details complaining about mods, and it should be fine.

it was a great submission, and you nailed it.

I think one of the concerns was visibility, its a nice rustic lookin piece but its really hard to see or understand the image. for a while we though the monster was raising from his own shadow when we realized it was water.

it was in the top ten though

Alright.
Happy Halloween, and all that.

First Place was really tricky on account of there was quite a few kickass submissions that deserved it. In the end we went with TheRealShadman. He tore it up with the details but still added plenty of atmosphere and humor.

1st TheRealShadman
2nd jagondudo
3rd Nekow
4th jouste
5th RobLovelett

congrats to all the winners again, and see you next contest.

I don't think anywhere is it stated he was a hero, its was a good guy, a good friend and had an amazing imagination. Stop reading into things.

or maybe read the rules?
or used the search bar to see if there were others with the same issues?
or posted the work in your original thread and stated your issues then?

lol the options are endless.

either way, you got your answer, you got your scout, and theres no need for multiple art threads , unless you are posting a progress thread, your art can all fall on the same thread.

Also, why does everyone on the Art Forum like to procrastinate everything so much? Could someone (*chough*BMK*chough*) just create a template and some guidelines so we could get to work?

I think everyone should be able to start drawing ideas now without a template just getting a feel on their aesthetics,

but if there are any plans to make the game play orginal or more complex, a template wouldn't be made for a while.

it could be a really fun game

artists submitting should be free to put in as much or as little as they want,
want to just do a minion? cool, a couple of minions? a sub-boss, boss, player character and backgrounds? even cooler.

Or you could wait till certain art is approved and add to that specific artist's style. anything should go,
definitely need a programmer first to hammer out the mechanics and details, then let the artists loose on those mechanics , and be creative as possible within those limitations.
