My personal opinion is that punishment in a society should not be dependent on punishing disgressors, rather rehabilitating them. Why do many contempary societies do this?
These people (Note that they are still human beings, not anything lesser) are still useful to society! Putting them in prisons, branding them as defective degenerates, then sending them out into the world with no prospect of living an ordinary, productive life is not an effect solution.
How does this relate to the death penalty? In taking a human life, they no longer are of any use to society. Even as a convicted murderer, they can still serve a purpose to society outside of prison. Executing them automaticly eliminates them from doing such.
"But what about psychopaths with no respect for the law or others around them? What about those rendered mentally incapable of knowing right from wrong? They are just going to keep commiting crimes!"
Those people can still contribute to society, but with the confines of a prison/institutional setting.
