Topic: So I Guess This Is It...

Posted: 08/03/09 07:29 PM

Forum: General

I've been hanging around NG since roughly 2001, and officially signed up in 2002. I've been around the NG community for seven long years. During that time, I became heavily involved with the forums, becoming a moderator in 2006. However, I believe my time here is coming to an end.

As of a few days ago, I asked Wade to demod me. And as you can tell by my not shiny gold aura, he did just that. I asked to be demodded for a few reasons. The first and most obvious is that I'm never around. Real life has taken priority over the internet and NG. My job and a social life will alway win. And why take up a mod spot when I just sit there inactive, right? Second, was the recent hacking of my account. I didn't realize it had been hacked until two weeks after the fact. This is a serious compromising of the mod team and any security they have.

So, I guess this is it. My grand farewell. I'll still be around posting every now and then. Although it will not come very often (don't worry Gooch, I won't forget your birthday).

A big thanks to Wade for giving the opportunity to be a moderator here. It was a blast and my e-penis will not forget it. To the mods who I've met at various Mod Meats...keep being the awesome people you are. Maybe one day I'll actually show up at a Montreal meet (lol, ya right).

Take care of yourselves and behave on the forums,
- mightypotato

Topic: Long Live The Great Japanese Empire

Posted: 06/26/09 05:48 PM

Forum: General

The Japanese were doomed to lose the war when they attacked Pearl Harbor. When they attacked Hawaii, it awakened one of the world's largest/mightiest industries into full force. The sheer numbers of tanks/aircraft/ships/etc that the US could produce overwhelmed anything the Japanese could have made. The attack on Pearl Harbor was meant to be an all out offensive that would completely annihilate the US Pacific Fleet. While the losses at Pearl Harbor were substantial, the Pacific Fleet remained intact and the US' resolve was strengthened.

Once the US won at Midway, there was no going back for the inevitable defeat of Japan. The atomic bombs prevented the US from staging an invasion of the Japanese homeland. This saved thousands of lives and shortened the war by months if not up to a year or more.

In response to the "brilliant tactician" you claim Togo to be, he was not. The Japanese conquest of the Pacific Rim was done mainly due to lack of support/troops in conquered areas (Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, etc). The Japanese were unable to conquer China under Tojo's leadership and as such had a good deal of their military dealing with that quagmire while trying to hold off the United States. Togo's gamble at Pearl Harbor failed, which ultimately caused the defeat of the Japanese.

From what I've heard, its slightly better than Live Search, but its no Google killer. I've also heard that MS might just say "fuck it" and buy Yahoo if this fails.

They already tried that for the Game Gear (lol) with Sonic Drift. It sucked. Hard.

And, knowing what most new Sonic titles are like, this one will probably suck too.

Posted: 05/28/09 12:57 PM

Forum: Video Games

With the internet and websites like gamefaqs, I don't understand how or why anyone would buy a strategy guide anymore. The last one I had was for Final Fantasy VIII, way back in the day. When I was buying the latest WoW expansion, they tried to sell me a strategy guide for it. I laughed and said that's what the internet is for.

God of War 2 take the cake with this for me. At the end of the game *SPOILERS INCOMING* when Athena gets killed and Kratos is climbing the cliff with Gaea, I was thinking "fuck yes, this is going to epic". But then "TO BE CONTINUED IN GOD OF WAR 3". I almost threw my controller at the TV I was so pissed off. Such a great game for a really weak cliffhanger ending.

I agree with everything you said. When I was in university, that was how I lived my life. Doing my work on time and not last minute, chatting with my professors (and eventually becoming friends) to expanding my social life.

I'd also like to say that you should take the time to do ridiculous and stupid things. Because, once you leave college/university, your shenanigans are typically frowned upon. Take the chance to be stupid now.

Given the right director and special effects, a live action version of Akira could be pulled off successfully. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of Ridley Scott crossing Blade Runner and Alien. At least that's the first thing that comes to mind.

Simple as.

And there's your answer. Also, the American sports market doesn't really favour the game. The American market tends to favour high impact/high excitement sports like the NFL or to a much lesser extent (seeing how its not really a sport), NASCAR.

Also, after watching ESPN whenever I'm down in the US, I notice that with the exception of the NBA, American sports markets tend to favour sports with set plays instead of fluidity. I suppose that the American market likes the brief moment of excitement then a chance to analyse everything before the next play. The NFL and MLB are prime examples of this.

Topic: The McGangBang

Posted: 03/16/09 08:44 PM

Forum: General

I'm a sucker for fast food, perhaps too much. I've experienced mouth watering highs like the McRib and vomit inducing lows like the McRib. You could say that I'm always looking for my next big score. Today, I found that big score. Perhaps, the greatest (depending on your definition of greatness) achievement in all of fast-foodery: the McGangBang.

The McGangBang is a sandwich steeped in lore, something that was only whispered about in back rooms and between employees of McDonalds. I feel it is my duty to bring this concoction to the attention of the general public. The sandwich, naturally is not on the menu. Because...naming a sandwich "gang bang" is poor marketing. Instead, it is something that must be created yourself, like an erector set of fried food.

First...you take a double cheeseburger and a junior chicken sandwich which are readily available on the cheap value menu. Then...you do the unthinkable. You separate the double cheeseburger and place the junior chicken sandwich firmly in the middle. Then, in act of defiance to the culinary gods, you reform the double cheeseburger. The unholy abomination you have just created is the McGangBang.

As lightning flashed in the distance and a wolf howled in the background, I took my first bite of the sandwich. I was extremely surprised. It was awesome. It was like a Big Mac, but with a chicken burger instead of another burger and gross sauce. After eating it however, I immediately came to regret my decision. For now, the sandwich is sitting like a boulder in my stomach. I suppose this is the fast food junkie's moment of remorse.

For now, I have my fix...but I'm always searching. Searching for the next great fast food item.

The McGangBang

I'd love to play Come Together on bass, and pretty much every song ever on vocals.

The vocals would really be the only fun part of this game, I would imagine. Because, who doesn't start singing along in the car when "Hey Jude" comes on?

Out of both companies that make these games (Activision/Harmonix), Harmonix is the one that would be able to pull it off without raping the legacy of The Beatles. That being said however, I'm not very optimistic of this game. Sure, the band has a great selection of songs to draw from, but I can't see it transferring to Rock Band very well.
