Response to: How to avoid cluttering a mix? Posted May 3rd, 2011 in Audio

Man I'm all for creativity, but "there are no ruuuules maaaan!" is just a really dumb and illogical mentality when taken to an extreme. I like that you came up with situations and reasons to use muddy reverb, Chris. This guy is just being stupid, though.

Of course I'm not saying that you can't put reverb on low frequencies; if you weren't supposed to then they'd have stopped making reverbs with the option to do so a long time ago. This thread is about advice and I gave advice. And in a lot of situations it's pretty sound advice, and I don't appreciate someone attempting to discredit it simply because of my blunt wording.

BUT ANYWAY it's cool and I'm really not one for mixing dogma.

erm, I don't know about this being a hard/fast rule at all...

There are no hard/fast rules in music production.

It's just a really fucking bad idea in most situations.

Yeah man there are no rules. Render your mixdowns at +6dB it's all good!

Moving, Throwing away stuff

Moving (hopefully) in a couple months. I still have a bunch of archived schoolwork and awful drawings from when I was 12 to 14 so those are gonna make a nice bonfire. All my old toys already belong to my younger relatives and if I need to get rid of (cheap) musical stuff I have can give it to my 8 year old cousin who idolizes me and wants to be a producer/recording engineer when he's older. Funny kid!

Response to: New to Dubstep Posted May 2nd, 2011 in Audio

Keep in mind that you're probably not going to make dubstep or similar music forever. 9 years ago I started producing cause I wanted to make cheesy club tunes, now I make all sorts of stuff. In 9 years time I doubt dubstep will even be made any more, or at least it will sound radically different to how it does now.

That's not to say you shouldn't try dubstep at all, I think I'm just trying to tell you to be open to change? I dunno.

Also I don't think there's anything wrong with making the "oversaturated" stuff if you're only just starting out. Learn the in's and out's of the genre... the "rules", so to speak. I spent most of 2004 and 2005 copying Aphex Twin and other artists that I really liked; I didn't make much fantastic music but I learned HEAPS of production techniques and got really good at speeding through my workflow and experimenting with sound.

It always helps to have people around to tell you what you're doing wrong (constructively). Make a few friends on NG/TheAP or join a dubstep group on soundcloud and you'll soon have a pool of people to bounce ideas and crtiques back and forth with. But just have fun and keep at it.

Response to: Ng2011 Time Sig Contest Discussion Posted May 2nd, 2011 in Audio

Hey, nice.

I'm working in 7/8 mainly, with a few bars of 9/8, 5/4, 13/8 and 15/8 thrown in at points, plus POLYRHYTHMS WOOOOOO.

@SBB 11/8 is cool, as with any timesig i just think of it in terms of where the accents lie and it becomes a lot easier to wrap my head around that way.

SOOOO what time signatures are you guys thinking of using?

I've started something in 7/8 (mostly). Much fun!

Response to: How can you tell what genre to put? Posted May 2nd, 2011 in Audio

judging by your name you're probably making industrial or metal lmao

Response to: Ng2011 Time Sig Contest Discussion Posted May 2nd, 2011 in Audio

So yeah I decided to write/record something for this instead of judging. Have fun, Quarl :)

Response to: Electro production tools Posted May 2nd, 2011 in Audio

If you're using massive for EVERYTHING that's probably why you're feeling limited, imho.

He probably meant ES2, cause I don't remember ES3 heh.

Response to: Electro production tools Posted May 1st, 2011 in Audio

Duuuude Logic Studio's range alone is rather powerful, in what way do you feel limited? Is there a certain sound that you don't feel you can achieve at the moment?

Reason is compatible with mac and should run well as a ReWire instrument in Logic, I'd definitely consider getting it as an expansion to your current setup. You get a bunch of very powerful and versatile synths and effects with their own sequencer/routing options; the value for money is second to none.

OH MAN i don't know if I'd rather judge or participate in the secondary contest because I'd love to do both AUGGGGH

Actually keen to remix now, though. FUN TIMES.

Response to: How to avoid cluttering a mix? Posted May 1st, 2011 in Audio

OH YEAH speaking of reverb don't ever reverberate frequencies below like 300-ish unless you have absolutely NOTHING else going on, otherwise you will destroy any clarity in your lows and low-mids and possibly cause harmonic dissonance.

Response to: How to avoid cluttering a mix? Posted May 1st, 2011 in Audio

Subtle stereo phase can cut big holes in the mix for other instruments to come through, always highpass before panning though.

With a lot of my mixes I use a VST called Sonalksis StereoTools on the master channel to output everything below 150-200Hz in mono (there are cheap/free VSTs that will do the same thing though).

Response to: Nac General Discussion Thread Posted April 30th, 2011 in Audio

Works for me!

Honestly Chron, I think it might be better if you just set the next challenge without taking ideas/whining from other people. Keep it a surprise until the first of June, and if they don't like it they can suck a hundred dicks OR like you said just run their own contest.

Response to: Distorting Drums Posted April 30th, 2011 in Audio

blood overdrive is something you use in situations where the next effect requires either a really hot or distorted input.

also, 909 bass drum + blood overdrive = old school hardcore kick :3

OH it's probably worth mentioning that at the site where we encourage review returns, we also have a 255 character minimum on reviews. So you don't just leave tit-for-tat "this is good lol" reviews, you actually have to think about it.

If they are reviewing a song with the intention of getting reviews back, it's not like they're going to leave a review with a lot of negative criticism (You know, the stuff that helps you improve), because they want to leave you feeling good enough to review their own stuff.

On another audio site that I frequent and moderate there's an option to include a link to a song of yours when you review, in order to encourage return reviews. We've never had a huge problem with people being ass kissers when they return a glowing review, but I think it requires a level of maturity that any site as large as NG can't maintain.

Actually it's funny because every now and then (like once every year) someone writes a "revenge review" (i.e. a really bad return review that's clearly dishonest and exaggerated) and the backlash that user receives is pretty hilarious.

Rate of time signature change? Also would the judges even notice, or even be aware of the time signature changes?

I realize you guys want a time signature contest.. but as it stands I don't see we would be able to judge it.

You judge it on a ratio of listenability/catchiness to technical prowess. Of course you wouldn't judge it based on how many dumb time sigs they crammed in.

I mean, when there's a "Uplifting" song contest you don't judge based just on how uplifting it is, you take into account general musicality and mix quality also (or at least, you should).
