The best beer I ever had was this one imported from BC called Kokanee. So fuckin' good, but I've never seen it in a store since then.

Australian beer is all shit. Except maybe James Squire, but it's more of a fancy dinner beer than a getting sloshed beer.

Talking about theory is nice but it's the sort of thing that you can't really start a vague conversation about...

"So, how about that music theory? Sure is... something."

An actual music theory query thread like the fruityloops questions thread would be good, though!

Thanks for the extremely useful and not at all pedantic contribution to the thread, but the way I (and a lot of other people that I've worked with) understand the term "unmastered" as a general term for a mix that doesn't have master compression or EQ. In any case, thanks for explaining to me what a mastering engineer does. Never would've guessed.

"unmixed" sounds to me like slapping a bunch of shit together with no regard to levels or sound-space. Which is not at all what I meant.

Just make sure people know that their submissions need to be UNMASTERED and in wav format. And not on the Audio portal.

I will definitely purchase this album if it doesn't fall through.

The way it indexes recorded files by default is very annoying, and no "empty trash" macro to remove all unused takes from the project AND the hard drive is a real bitch.

I still record into FL usually because I cbf loading another program.

Recorder
It's a pretty legit instrument if you can play it well!
Doesn't quite sound the same as an ocarina to me. Less "pure" sounding, I think.

Friends With Benefits
My girlfriend is probably my best friend, does that count?
Fuck buddies are okay for some people, if you're like me and get attatched to people easily then it's a bad idea.

Old Guys and Awesome Music
My music teacher in high school loved experimental electronica and music concrete. She used Kraftwerk as a case study for texture and when I showed her Autechre she thought they were the bee's knees. She was easily in her mid-late 60s.

I have a friend who uses Renoise because his mind "works downards, not across", or so he says. It looks pretty extensive and powerful, though. I've only ever used FamiTracker, personally.

I personally use FL. With some plugins that no one knows about. >:3

Skip the XXL bundle, imo. You'll use about 2 or 3 of the plugins regularly, tops ;)

Takes as long as it takes until an audio mod gets to it. There's a backlog of 300+ people at the moment last I heard, but It'll clear up before long and you only have to get approved once.

Response to: About Fl Studio Oscillators Posted May 28th, 2011 in Audio

I think he wants a nicer sounding oscillator waveform to start with. And rightly so (imho), the default ones in 3xOsc seem to create awful overtones on notes higher than like C6. Unless you're filtering them, which you should often be! Even taking just a bit of the high end off with the built-in Fast LP filter will make the sound a lot smoother but without taking away too much desirable brightness.

A couple of comedians suggested creating waveforms in ms paint or something else stupid which I didn't read properly. They may or may not have been referring to the fact that you can actually load a custom waveform into 3xOsc by dragging a sample from the browser and dropping it on top of the channel settings window (click for picture). You can then use this custom waveform by choosing the "?" from the oscillator selection. Most samples will sound absolutely dreadful as a waveform, but FL comes with a whole bunch that don't, and they're located in Packs>Shapes.

Now once the sample is loaded into the 3xOsc channel, you can mess around with it even more. Open the "SMP" tab in 3xOsc channels and play around with the precomputed effects (click for picture). You can turn most waveforms into something quite different with these knobs, but keep in mind that you can't automate them.

Are the ear inserts replaceable? I've found that my left ear canal is a little narrower than my right, so any headphones that have size adjustments would be great, but not a necessity, as my helmet will keep them in place.

I think I had either K309's or K311's but I honestly couldn't tell you exactly (I stepped on them accidentally last year and now they are no more!). They sort of sat over the the top of the ear canal instead of going inside, so I never had much problem with comfort and they never fell out because of the way they hooked around the ear lobe (but that's not really an issue with the helmet and all).

Response to: Drum Sequencing Posted May 26th, 2011 in Audio

It's very dependent on the feel and mood of the song. Generally the way I see it is that fills (and rhythmic percussion as a whole) should compliment or emphasize the music. In the bar where you want your fill to be, think about where the accents are in the melody and place your hits on them to make them seem more important. I guess.

This is a strictly subjective way of explaining it, though. You could also try watching video tutorials for drummers playing fills, that will probably help you with writing them too.

What are you using to drive the heaphones? Like what are you using to play the music in the first place. I'm not sure how they are now, but the last few generations of iPod were capable of pushing a sound waaaay louder than pretty much any other mp3 players.

Anyway don't get anything too pricey like Aiaiai's or whatever. For earbuds I've never had any problems with my AKGs but they fit quite differently to other brands. Sony do some decent pairs too. It's been a long time since I've bought a new pair of these though!

Are you using ASIO4All? You can probably get the latency down to a somewhat bearable speed if you just wanna play a couple synths.

For external soundcards this looks alright, but check for reviews online first.
