Response to: Fl Studio Riff Machine? Posted June 2nd, 2011 in Audio

I don't understand why it's such a bad thing, if you don't like it then just don't use it.

It's no more/less contrived than writing the same riff yourself and then "sprinkling" stuff on it to make a song, anyway. There's a song of mine on the AP which has the same four notes repeated for nearly 8 whole minutes, which I could've very well done using riff machine. The point is, I put more effort into just the timbral and dynamic variation than some people do in an entire song, so the means I used to get four notes into a pattern is entirely irrelevant.

I also automated the arpeggiator section to make it sound like there were more than 4 different notes that were sequenced, but it's just one pattern the whole time/

Effectrix is also great, it's like dblue on steroids! Pretty pricey, though I won a copy so the price didn't bother me.

CC is more of an end-user license, but yeah posting the AP doesn't relinquish your copyright ownership and I'm sure that a NG compilation (for charity, no less) would operate in the same way.

Did I mention that I'm down for chill? Maybe upbeat too. Either/or!

Yeah that Audix is a dynamic instrument microphone, so it would be great for beatboxing and other uses where you drive it rather loudly. The EMU preamp/interface should be fine as long as it can supply phantom power to a condenser mic.

Response to: Learning how to sing & recording Posted June 2nd, 2011 in Audio

Good vocal quality starts with the microphone and the room. Ideally you would want a large-diaphragm condenser microphone that suits your voice and a room that's been acoustically treated BUT you can afford to settle with a room that's either dead as possible (so just hang blankets up all over your recording space) or a room with nice acoustics (good luck finding one in your house!).

As far as singing lessons go, it'd be a great investment if you're already competent at pitching properly but want to do it properly and sound nicer. An actual teacher is way better than a youtube video. But hey, here's some youtube videos for now :)

I hope you're not seriously suggesting that it's okay for people writing hip hop tunes to use "bad language" but not others. because that's kinda bullshit.

I don't think we need another thread full of people just posting links to tracks though. They can make a post like Echo's just above saying that they're interested and which album they'd like to contribute to, then whoever is judging can have a look at one or two of their relevant songs.

Or something.

it's 12 minutes long, you can take any parts of it that you like best and edit them together.

And even if you have the permission of the copyright holders, the TOS that you agree to when uploading a track dictate that you can't upload something that you didn't make, regardless of the situation.

Response to: Ask your FruityLoops questions here Posted May 30th, 2011 in Audio

It's just got a really nice, versatile, way of sequencing and mixing stuff and a lot of quite good built-in plugins and effects. You can also use it as a ReWire host or client, which is nifty!

I've been using it for nine years but I dunno about all the rave reviews. I just love the workflow, personally.

There's a free VSTi called "Synth1" which is modeled off of the Clavia Nord Lead 2, it can do really nice rich trancey leads and chords.

OP, maybe they actually think your song is worth a 0? A lot of people have very harsh, binary views on music. Even if they're just being a dick, competitive 0 bombing is just something that happens and the best solution is to not care about the score.

To be clearer, just in case people don't read my walls of text, I will most likely request everyone submit it as a FLAC, AIF, or other uncompressed format. Sorry to be extremely helpful and not at all pedantic, but the FLAC format is compressed. It's lossless too, though, so there's really no reason for me to point that out. Derp.

Personally, I think it'd be easier in the long run to have everyone use a single samplerate, bit depth and format to save any future conversion hassles. But it doesn't really affect me either way.
