I think the gore is possibly one of the reasons why GOW is so popular. Another aspect would have to be the hard-hitting, gritty sorta heavy feel to it. When you chainsaw someone, it looks like it hurts. BAD. It's all to do with the lighting, the camera's movement, the sound effects and the blood. Compare this to things like Dynasty Warriors, you just don't get the satistfaction you do in GOW.

Conclusion: It may not necessarily be the gore that does it for me, but it certainly adds to the awesomeness.
