So I don't visit NG much any more. Some of you may remember me but perhaps not:X

Basically, I made this because I signed in to check if I perhaps got a review in the time I've been away. Now, I realize I'm not the best artist around, far from it. I also realize that some of my older works are really quite terrible. But something about a couple of reviews I got seemed a bit suspicious. Upon checking the user pages, I find out that not only were they by recently made accounts.. But the user(s) had done but one thing. A few audio "reviews."

Hnnng's Reviews.

EhMyHip's Reviews.

Take a look for yourself. It's clear some form of administrative help is needed, but I thought I'd make this thread to see if anyone else has run into similar such posts? I get the idea it's the same person. Perhaps some form of IP ban is in order, but I'll leave that to the higher ups.

360 Wireless Receiver.. Bsod..!? Posted September 29th, 2008 in Video Games

Alright, my computer is being somewhat fucked up in general, and suffice it is to say I'm pretty damned frustrated. But there's no spyware or adware, or malware in general, I've made sure. And by all accounts, everything is just dandy.

...Then, one fateful stormy night...

For some damned reason, whenever I turn on an Xbox 360 controller that's synced to my wireless receiver, is blue screens my PC the moment it finishes connecting. I can't explain this at all. I've tried different USB ports, I've tried different controllers, I can't get anything to work. And it's been working fine for months. In fact, it was working fine just yesterday, and there's been no changes to my PC since. It's just started blue screening it.. One might say the problem just appeared, almost as if it.. Just came out of the blue? Lol ._.

Anyhow, I'm stumped. I don't have a damned idea. Anyone got any advice?

For referrance, my PC is an Acer Aspire laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, SP1.

Daaamn. I really appreciate all the info, Ocelot. Certainly it will come in handy later on down the road. But Insane has more the idea. I'm not looking to really make money or play in a band here. This is for personal use, and for putting a real guitar in my songs, instead of faking it all the time. Perhaps my next guitar and amp will go much further down the path of true quality, but as for right now, yeah. I'm just a noob who wants to make loud noises.

I appreciate all the advice, everyone. Really helps. I think I'm going to go with this deal, and I should have it by april. Certainly, I'll have more questions when I get it. Couldn't have asked for more informative answers though. :D

Any advises on how to get a realistic electric guitar sound in FL?

Firstly, I'd reccomend upgrading to Slayer 2. Secondly, I'd be happy to help out. But what sort of guitars are you going for?

FL Slayer is a lot sharper than Slayer 2, but it's not nearly as lively or believable.
Response to: I'm buying a guitar kit, electric. Posted February 25th, 2008 in Audio

Thanks a ton, Ocelot. I really appreciate the advice. Though, I shouldn't think I would really be playing live at all, or at least, not live in the performance sense. Perhaps I may play for another person or two but not over a band or anything of the sort. Rather, I'd be plugging headphones into it most of the time, and when I'm not it will probably be plugged into my computer for recording purposes, so I'm not terribly worried about the speaker.

As for what I said before about playing mostly rock on it, I understand and actually knew before that you can play any style on any guitar. I had asked a few friends that know a thing or two about guitars, and done a bit of studying as I said. What I meant, rather, and I suppose I should have been a little more clear on this, is that I want versatile tonal options to get the feel I want for the kind of rock or metal I want. If the amp can do that to at least a satisfying degree, I'm happy. I'll leave it to my computer to play with it from there.

As for the guitar, I believe it is a solid piece design, or rather, it's not made from multiple pieces glued together. As best I can tell, it is designed from the ground up to be a comfortable, playable, starter/practice guitar. Seeing as how I'm ordering from online, I can't really have them pass it to me to hold for a few moments or anything of the sort. But I am to understand it is comfortable, and the amp will provide the tones that will get me by. I'll leave the really fancy stuff for later on, or for my own effects.

The only thing I am truly still curious about is if anyone here has experience with Spider amps. Any thoughts on them? What I've been able to gather is that this particular amp is excellent at producing tones found in most modern rock or metal, and sounds good at medium to low volume, with plenty of room to customize, and fairly high quality effects, when one considers the price. On the flipside, it does start to distort at higher volumes, and I've come across several reports of hissing or popping noises starting up after 10 or 15 minutes, and the processor bogs down. It seems to be tied into the delay, judging by one person's report. Does anyone here have any first hand experience?

Ah, I had no idea. Though, it's not really a huge concern as of right now. Rock will be the main focus. As long as I can shred with it when I want to, too. :D

Er, also. I'm of the mind to stay away from peavey. As I hear it's rather a bit of a cheap brand. I'm sure they probably make some good guitars, but they wouldn't be my first choice. Thanks for the tip on the tremolo, though. I'll see if I can figure out a way around it..

Another thing though, when I said I can use effects on my computer.. Well, I realize it's not as satisfying as having the physical knobs to tweak, but I can still work it realtime. It's not too big a deal.

I only took a quick look at that so far, but it looks brilliant. I might pick up the RP50 at some point later this year. At a hundred dollars it seems pretty reasonable.. The upgraded models are too expensive for me, based on the fact I probably wouldn't use the effects they include over the RP50.

To give you an idea of what the pack includes though, since you can't load the page..

The reason why I'm looking at this pack is because it seems to be just right. I've looked around, and it seems it's good practice not to start with something cheap. Because a cheap guitar will often deter new players, due to it being harder to play, keep in tune, both, or just not having a very fun tone. The advice I've gotten is is best to aim for something above 300 dollars, no matter what, unless you know what you're getting is good.

The amp isn't really a big concern of mine, as I've got plenty of amp software that will do the job perfectly anyway, and I can always touch it up with other effects if need be to get the sound just right. What I want is a guitar I can sit down with and play, comfortably. And still play five years down the road. As best I can tell, this setup is great for exactly that. It's not studio quality, and if you were going for a truly high end sound you'd by something a bit pricier, but for great quality at a low price, this seems to be the way to go.

I looked at a few of those metal packs in my search, and got a bit interested in them as well, but I fear it may be exactly that. A metal pack. I would prefer something I can experiment more with. Mostly I'm just wanting the guitar itself and the other necessaries, but the amp is a bonus. It seems to be a rather high quality amp for the wattage and price range. The amp itself appears to be priced around the 75 to 100 dollar mark, which isn't very cheap either. And yet, reviews for the package are great.

The amp itself seems to have some bad reviews elsewhere, including problems with popping noises, or hissing, after about 10 or 15 minutes of playing. Much like having the backbuffer too low. But others say it's great. The one thing about it is it seems it doesn't have too much character to it. At least, original character. But again, I can punch that through a few software effects and get something rolling. I just want something that sounds good, and is versatile. I'm still thinking this is my best bet.

I really appreciate the advice though. It really does help. I hate to sound like I'm pretending I really know a lot about guitars, because I really don't. I've never played one. But I have been doing my studying of this stuff.. I want to make sure my first guitar is an experience I'll love, not something I'm going to go "Shit. That was over three hundred bucks.." x_x

I'm buying a guitar kit, electric. Posted February 25th, 2008 in Audio

And I need to hear some thoughts on it. Because, for lack of a better way of putting it.. 'Dis shit ain't cheap.

I'm looking for a rock sound, and I'm not looking for something amazing. Just something nice to get me rolling. I'll worry about a kick ass amp and guitar rig later. Right now, I'm looking at this...

It has everything I need to get rolling, seems to be of relatively high quality make, and it's within my price range. I just want to know, is it worth it? Best I can tell, I can get some pretty awesome rock and metal noises out of this thing, after I learn how to play it, of course. Oh, yeah. This would be the guitar I learn with. Plus, I should be able to fudge some more acoustic stuff, but I'll worry about that later. Primarily, I'm looking for that rock/metal sound.

So, I'm wondering, what's your thoughts? Is it worth it? This is primarily addressed to the people who know and play guitars, but any advice at all is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Response to: That Professional Sound Posted February 25th, 2008 in Audio

In my opinion, it's simpler than all of that.

The fact is that they are professional simply because many people enjoy their work. The more people enjoy your work, the more professional you will become. Really, if you compose music by tapping a pencil against a mug and humming and you somehow manage to get it just right and everyone loves it, you could just be a professional.

But it boils down to the definition of the word. If your profession is to compose music, then you are a professional, regardless.

Ultimately, you should aim for what you like. If you like really muddied stuff, go for it. People may tell you otherwise, but if you're already doing what you like, why should you change just for them? Conversely, if you like a more clean, clear cut sound, then go for that instead. Most people will probably side with you. If it's just coincidence, that's great, but you shouldn't go for a certain sound simply to please other people.

Now, you are in fact aiming for that clear, clean sound, it seems. This comes down to a few things, such as making sure there is a clear definition between each instrument, or that when two instruments play a note that carries in the same frequency range, they are in fact playing the same note, else it will start sounding a little crowded. Using EQs is a must for cleaning up the sound and helping to improve the contrast between frequencies, as well as boost quiet frequencies on some things so as to give it a more crisp sound. But remember, EQs do not generate noise, they only increase or decrease the decibels in a certain frquency range. For instance, if you ran a snare through an EQ and pumped the high frequencies way up, it's probably going to sound tinny. However, if you increased the low end as well, it will have a nice, full sound. But if the entire sample of the snare is in the mid frequencies, and you only increase the high/low, then you will not notice any difference in the snare itself. It will only make details you want louder, or details you don't want more quiet, it will not add depth or definition to a sound that simply did not have it to start off with.

Another trick is maximizers. These will provide an excellent way to automatically level your sound with the rest of the track. An example being.. Lets say, a piano, a bass, and a drum kit. The piano playing by itself will be rather loud, but without distorting, however, as the frequencies become more crowded with the other instruments, the bass and the drums, the volume will be limited on each respective instrument so as to provide a level sound throughout a track, without peaking. This can be done by hand, of course, as a true engineer would do, but for the average composer, it's a time saver that just cannot be overlooked. Try out "YOU WA SHOCK!" for a good, free, maximizer. Kudos to Karco for pointing that one out to me.

One final tip for loudness in general is to use a limiter. Hard, soft, or whatever. It depends on what you want. A limiter will allow you to crank the volume way up without peaking or breaking your speakers. This provides you with the capability for truly booming instrumentals, intense guitars, synths, or anything. The catch is that the limiter works on automatically fudging around with the frequencies of the sound passing through it. So any part of the sound that would cause peaking is cut down and reduced, or limited, rather. Limiters are great for really pumping out some serious noise, but are generally frowned upon because you sacrifice detail and clarity to get it.

Ultimately, however, the choice is entirely your's. Go for the sound you really want, tips and practice will help you get where you want to be, but as for a "professional sound"? It just doesn't exist. Do what you like, and if others like it too, maybe you'll be offered a profession in it, and thus, become a professional. It's all about money, though, so it doesn't really matter in the end.

Hope I've helped out a bit, and hopefully, I didn't give any false facts, because I'm rather an amature myself. :D

Good luck. :3

Well that really depends. What kind of music are you in to? You could have techno, rock.. Whatever. Personally, I just reccomend taking your favourite tracks from whoever with you. I'd say something a little more upbeat. That is, nothing dark or brooding or anything. Beats me, though. It's really a matter of taste.

I'm getting a real guitar soon.. But I know what you mean. Well. Used properly, a synth guitar can really give some effects a real guitar can't. You have a lot more fidelity with synths, so long as you know what you're doing. But a real guitar has a lot more life to it, typically. Either way, I'll probably find myself using a mixture of the two. :x

I can't quite be more clear about this.. For the most effective 8-Bit synthesizer.. Magical 8-Bit is probably your best bet.

I use it myself for anything 8-Bit, it's excellent. An example of it can be found on my page, but I don't reccomend it, as a better example would probably be the demo included on the download page I've linked to..

Take a look. If you want 8-Bit sounds, you won't be let down.
