feminism + iraqi prisoners Posted May 7th, 2004 in Politics

Call me sick, call me twisted.. but some part of me really likes the female soldier who tortured the iraqi prisoners. In some odd way it feels like payback for the thousands of years women were shat upon and never got to do any shitting of their own. You know what, Pfc. Lynndie R. England? You have become my feminist hero, and I am not even goddamn feminist. I love you for dragging male combatants around on a leash and piling them up into humiliating poses. If no one else will be your friend or give you any respect, I sure as hell will. You are taking back a little of the power men have leached from women since the dawn of existence and proving that yes, women can be brutal too. I'll write you in jail, good luck.

Yes, I agree completely. In a situation as volatile as this one the media really, REALLY should never be involved first due to their propensity to exploit tragedies and scandals to gain ratings and second because of the reaction we are seeing this cause in the arab world. Of course we are never going to have a great reputation in the arab world, however we need to do the best to keep it as spotless as we can, even if that means witholding information from the public.

Response to: Abuse of Iraqi Prisoners Posted May 3rd, 2004 in Politics

no, no. we should NOT abuse the iraqi prisoners. it is against military law (as stated by the geneva conventions by which our military abides) to abuse or torture our prisoners of war. however, i still believe that the soldiers in question should have been quickly and secretly disciplined by the military instead of having it be this huge international scandal where everyone human being with access to a tv or radio can know about it and therefore hate the us even more.

So why not dodge that draft.

It's sentence. And you are not necessarily protecting just the borders of the country or something so concrete as that, you are fighting in the country's percieved interest. I was not for vietnam nor iraq, but I would have still fought in both because a. i dont want anyone to go instead of me and b. being a citizen is like another sort of job, or a symbiotic relationship of sorts. it's about give and take. you can't just be a citizen and never be expected to have to sacrifice something, even if you don't necessarily agree with it. you have every right to dissent and to disagree and speak out against the war and by all means, do, that is one of your rights. however that is the "give" part of the relationship, your country has to take from you at times too.

Response to: Abuse of Iraqi Prisoners Posted May 3rd, 2004 in Politics

regardless of whether it's a war or a conflict, there are certain things that just shouldn't be let out because they are going to make the situation worse. would you rather we have some select information withheld from us for the time being or we know everything and cause many more problems than are necessary?

Response to: Draft Dodging Posted May 3rd, 2004 in Politics

Draft dodging certainly isn't treason, but I do see it as morally reprehensible. First of all, you are sending someone else to fight in your place, because the country is going to get someone to fight whether you skip out or not. Second, you owe your country your liveliehood, your ability to live in an orderly society and thrive as a human being within it. I think that, even if the war is not right in your interests, you have an obligation to the your country to help defend the security you enjoy.

Abuse of Iraqi Prisoners Posted May 3rd, 2004 in Politics

This isn't going to be a rant against the military police who performed the abuse on the Iraqi prisoners.. Yes, what they did was wrong, however, I am more angry at whoever leaked this information to the media and for the media for exploiting this story. HELLO PEOPLE, there is a WAR on here we are trying to win, and there are certain things that need to be kept within the military during a war. Really, more harm than good was done by exposing this incident to the public. The 6 or 7 soldiers who performed the abuse should be reprimanded but really, there is absolutely no need for anyone else to know until the war is long, long over. We are trying to get the arab world to stop hating us so we can clean up the mess we got ourselves into. We cannot do that if we allow our media to expose our military's flaws on international telivision 24 hours a day. Christ almighty, does no one know how to run a regime anymore??

i seriously doubt that. i dont see how the israelis are "assholes", really i think they are perfectly justified in acting in self defense.

im convinced the only way to true peace in the world would be to kill and or brainwash this entire present generation of militant islamic people who are bent on terrorism. but of course thats not ethically possible.

anyway though, i really see absolutely no reason why the palestinians should have any more of israel than the disputed west bank territory which is being gradually returned to them as we speak (read today's new york times, kids) if anyone has a historical claim to it, it is really the jews. if anyone has a strategic claim to it, its the united states. it sounds harsh, but its true. i really dont feel comfortable with a middle east without US intervention.

russia's oil reserves are run by a few oligarchs, the rest of the country is still pretty much in economic ruin. unless there is some major overhaul there (and i do have some faith in putin), they will never be able to compete.

he wasn't a retired terrorist, he still held very much influence over the radical palestinian community... the US will never be completely knocked off its pedestal because we are too economically intertwined with china for them to benefit from our downfall. russia is too weak and will continue to be too weak to harm us for a long time. we have to worry about terrorism a lot more than those two countries.

besides, i care more about the stability of the international order than who is actually leading it. if it is china, then so be it. i would be relatively satisfied.

No, we can't just bring them home. That would leave a failed state in the middle east just ripe for another dictator (most likely religious this time, and MUCH worse than saddam ever was) to come to power and make another terrorist nation commited to the destruction of western culture. Just what we need. I really think we would have been better off just leaving saddam there. He was a power easily checked in that reason who did not as far as we know harbor any terrorist nor WMD's in his nation. Now, since we made the horrendous foreign policy blunder to get into the war with iraq, we have gotten ourselves completely fucked. It's really a lose lose situation now.

Foreign policy liberals really have no idea what they are talking about, there is no, absolutely NO way our nation could survive the international order if we started conducting ourselves like that.

Response to: We MUST stop helping Israel! Posted April 15th, 2004 in Politics

Hmm.. stop supporting Israel? I don't think that would be a wise foreign policy decision. Israel is the united states' most valuable ally in the middle east. It is the ONLY middle eastern country we can count on to not harbor nor breed terrorism AND the only country in that region we know will always do what the US government tells it to.

If we lose Israel, we lose the entire middle east. Not a great idea.
