Response to: Looking for an artist for comic Posted January 23rd, 2011 in Art

Yesterday in the Art Portal: An enthusiastic fellow called TheJackKeaton enters the scene and creates a thread in an attempt to find an artist for his webcomic. The very next day he creates another thread about the exact same topic for no clear reason. FIN!

Moral of the story: Keep it in one thread, please. And good luck finding someone for you comic.

Bad choice of words. What I meant to say was:

Ahaaaaa, I see. That's the spirit!

I'm not sure if you'll find someone that will do that for you here. But you should try to include some more information. What size do you want them? What filetype maybe and for what do you need it? What is in it for the artist that does the pics for you?

So many questions....

First page only? Way to treat us shoddy.

The drawing style may be interesting, but it's executed kinda sloppy. There are blank spaces in the colouring of some pieces and especially the backgrounds look wobbly. Try to keep the shading consistent, on one panel they are on the front of the girls legs, then suddenly on the back.

Also you should not use fonts in your case, but actually draw the letters yourself. If you still want to use fonts, use some that suit the comic better.

The comic itself is ok. The joke is not like amazingly funny, but that's maybe just me.

It's very unusual for art collab entries, since you get featured somewhere in the flash anyway, (or even co-authored if your stuff is good enough) so it's not necessary.

If you asked me, I think a colourful totem is not such a big problem. I actually think it can look quite interesting.

Also, what direction is the light coming from?
Is there a lot of light or a little?

Important question, what you say? I think the totem is somewhere outdoors, isn't it?

And if you ask me what my ideas are, idk. I JUST DON'T KNOW.
So don't ask.

What are your ideas Kashi?

BTW since there are no "position numbers" anymore, I hope I can get my laptop fixed soon and join this cool collab idea.

Ok... firstly, the anatomy is off. The arms are too short and the lower part of the torso looks a little long to me.

Secondly, there's no shading, you should add that to give the pic some depth.

Also, the way she holds the gun looks strange and the feet look like blocks.

Is she partially nude or is that the colour of the suit? It looks nude on the torso but not at the lower feet and on the breasts.

I like your art, especially the "poppy land" one, but never ever ask to be scouted..... never.... seriously don't do it.... it's bad.... no asking mmkay? Asking will only lower your chances.

Welcome to the art forum then.

May I ask why you added that background? It's pixelated and makes your pic look worse. Also that character is a little pixelated, I think something screwed up while saving/exporting or something. The shading looks improper too.

Is that an original character of yours?

Response to: Looking for artists to make a comic Posted January 9th, 2011 in Art

Ok.... to be honest I didn't read the whole script and I also didn't read the whole previous conversation, but I may still have some advice for you.

First off, the whole discussion about your word choice can become very exhausting. It's best you find someone who is fine with the way you write dialogue. But that doesn't mean you should not rethink it. You are going to write the comic for an audience, not for yourself. So it could become a problem someday.

Anyway as for the story you written, it's not my personal taste, but it seems you put some thought and energy in it. If you are looking for comic artists however, you may need to write everything again (yes that sounds hard) in a comic book style. Writing comic books consists of describing what happens in every single panel as well as the dialogue and everything that's in those little boxes in the corner (like "Meanwhile...." etc.).

Also you have long parts being "narrated" which is not very useful for your artist. And you should add some descriptions about the scenery and since you've set up a character description already you should add your idea of their looks.

Now an example, you wrote:
"Andre looked over and saw the man, wondering who he was.

Andre: Who the hell are you?"

You should write something like:
"We see a man on the left of the panel, a little in the background. He is turned towards the viewer. The man looks/wears *describing his looks*. Andre is almost turned with his back to the viewer, he is *you could describe his pose here* and is looking at the man."

Andre: Who the hell are you?"

What you wrote is basically the story, you either need to "write the comic" or add a "Comic writer" to your list, if you don't want to do it yourself.

It may sound like a lot of work, but don't let that get you down.

To come to an end with the reply I would like to recommend this article by Barry Lyga to you.

And don't forget to tell us when you have your first issue done.

Good luck with that!

But honestly, I chose my B-Movie Poster entry, because I didn't get any feedback on it yet. I already know about most of the mistakes I made, but I'm sure you have some more useful hints and pointers for me at hand.

Ok maybe some more details will help you find someone. I would not be able to do the art, but if I would, I'd like to know what exactly you need. You basically want all the old art replaced by new art? Same anime-like style? Can you tell how much art and/or animated art you need?

I know you want people to contact you to talk about the details, but providing more info could increase your chances of getting serious answers.

Good luck finding someone!

Hey everybody, with my laptop being somewhere between broken and half-repaired, I don't know when I can contribute on the art side again. So do you have any idea when this supposed to be picked up again? Or is this great idea abandoned due to lack of participators?

Also bump for all the fellow writing forum users who didn't notice this collab so far.

Normally, all art posted in the art portal must be original art, created by you and no photos (except for photos of paintings you did or sculptures you did etc.). Hard to say how this kind of photo manipulation should be judged. It is art after all, but many of us (including me) thought photo manipulations were not allowed in the art portal.

Now you have an impression of what the guys are talking about. Anyways, I like your piece!
