Yeah, that's pretty much how things roll in this forum. Just keep posting and you will get useful comments. People usually don't post just to say "Looks good" or something.
I think your pixel art looks good so far btw, just keep em coming. Maybe some different poses for the characters or something completely different, like a building, animal etc.
At 7/19/11 02:34 PM, PinkRose11 wrote: sweetness. Let me know what you think.
I think the lineart came out nice, but you generally need to work on your shading, it doesn't really look consistent. I think you chose your lightsource to be on the right of the owl, but I am not really sure.
Try to break the owl apart into geometric shapes (as close as possible) and shade them accordingly. For example, the head would basciall be shaded like a sphere while the single talons would be almost shaded like a cylinder.
Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but I think you could really improve your pics with a more proper shading.

Sooo fan art ill make it more clear next time for those of incapapble of understanding that ill make sure it has a big FAN ART stamp on it next time..
First off you didn't even hint anything about fan art so it has nothing to do with anybody's "incapability", nobody could have known unless they can read your mind.
Also this is NOT fan art, it is just tracing someone else's work. It's not art that YOU made, but art that you replicated. It would be fan art if you actually drew your own pic of Leonidas.
Tracing may not be forbidden, but it is not very welcome or considered art. You should also tell us beforehand and provide the source pic, because they way you did makes you seem as if you wanted to deceive us.
Finished second entry for NDC '11.
Again, the forum regs helped a lot.
At 7/19/11 10:24 PM, jeeshwa123 wrote: man, did i really miss out on art-forum rule changes? lol. I've been gone too long.
Yeah, there is no starter pic rule anymore.
R.I.P. starter pic rule....
I think the background is distracting from the foreground cause the lines are much stronger and draw the viewer on it. Also it's kinda weird how he is placed in the door, almost as if he is framed.
As for the char itself, he looks as if he is going to fall on his back. His right leg is shorter than the other and the hand looks weird. It looks as if a finger is missing.
Generally I can see that the character is in a cartoon style but the off anatomy still makes him look wrong.
Also I think the skin is a little too yellowish, like he is sick or something. The shoe could use some shading since the rest of the body.
The dog should be a bit more visible, the red is covering it too much.
Another one:
Location: Beertown in Bratwurstland
Age, Gender: 26, male
Fun Fact: If you suffered from epistemophobia, would you want to know?

I like the lineart and the idea. Hootingsworth truely sounds like a proper name for a proper old wise owl. I kinda imagine a tophat and monocle on him, but that's just me.
Overall it is very nice to see how you improved since the start of the thread.
I was about to post my second NDC entry, but it just doesn't feel right to me yet. Any suggestions?
Maybe a different message?
At 7/17/11 01:58 PM, sparkster28 wrote: it was drawn with hard work and committment not a damn mouse,
Huh? What tools did you use to draw this? A tablet? Cause hard work and commitment alone won't produce a pic.
As for your pic, you should clean up your lineart before you go colouring. It looks pretty messy if you leave it like that. What is the black thing beneath his feet? If it's supposed to be a shadow, then it doesn't get across and wouldn't make sense with the light source you chose for the shading and highlighting of the character.
The other pics in your art tab look a tight bit better than this one.
you're hypocrites.
You obviously don't know the meaning of "hypocrite".

This looks great and kinda creepy. You should consider defining the lower part a bit more, especially where the legs meet the body. But it's a great piece already.

Did I miss the winners page? :(
If I did, can someone post a link of who won. Thanks!
Good night everyone.
P.S. I went out of town and have been bothering my in-laws borrowing their computer to see who won! lol
see ya
The winners have not been announced yet. There should be a newspost by the staff, most likely by Tom Fulp, once they know who won.

If you are somewhat experienced with pen and paper already, the only advice I can give you is that you get used to it by practice. Doodle and sketch a lot and you will get a feeling for where your hand is in relation to the tablet and therefore the screen.
Sorry if this is not the answer you were looking for, but I don't know of any tutorials that focus on the transition from pen and paper to tablet other than the regular drawing tutorials.
It's still NG ARTisan.

I just think it needs a bit more definition, the handle is a bit short and the "guards" / quillions should be more balanced. At the moment one is thinner than the other.
But hey, it's a WIP so I guess nobody expects something finished yet.

i try my absolute hardest on avoiding cliches and focus on making characters different yet i cant help but keep bringing them back to comedic and silly
i know some easy pointers on these topics like making a chart from ranges of emotions and picking attributes of them to have in a character and keeping them to a sole emotion generally so not to overload the character thus making a mary sue
if anyone has any advice to offer in these or knows a lot about this id be grateful to learn from you
also im working on trying to make my characters structure look unique, i like the idea of making them all sillouettes to see if they are instantly distinguishable to each other, but i like to keep the structure fairly realistic and struggle in this too
and uh...this is my first post so im probably doing this wrong >_>
I think in your case, it would definitely help if you posted some of your sketches. People have a hard time giving you advice without knowing what you already know or what you are even going for, cause the way people design their original characters varies a lot.
And here is my second entry for the Screw Collab.

Thanks for the kind words. The pic below was later though. It was a quick colouring, thus the lower quality compared to the notepad collab entry, I guess.
I like to see people improving by the help of the art forum and the regs around helped me a lot too. Actually, I had no idea about drawing when I first came here.
Here comes my first entry for the third installment of the Screw Collab.
