Hello ChocolateKitteh :)
I'm ChocolateKitteh and I'm new here ^^ Jut signed up yesterday :3
Welcome on board!
I'd like you to ask what you think of my work:
It's an uncensored version of my "Enchained Lust" painting on deviantART :3
I know it seems as if everybody was criticising you solely because you drew something excessively sexual. But that's not the point, or at least most of the users did not have that intention. For the moment, forget that stuff about all that "artistic value" blah blah blah. There's not more or less artistic value or "credibility" in the topic of your pic than in a pic of a giant robot battle someone else drew up. There may however be more value in the technical realization of other pics.
Ephyse mentioned some vital points about the composition already. pockets08 doesn't really seem to know what focal point means yet (no offense to him intended), cause to me the focal point is the face of the upper girl (which you wanna have as focus) and the torch on the wall (which probably should not be a focal point).
Squint a little at your pic and and check what stands out, what draws your eyes to it. You can also try to close your eyes infront of the pic and when you open them again try to realize what the first thing is you are looking at. That would be your primary focus.
All that focus talk aside, it is obvious that you know how to draw basically. So please don't take all the criticism you get personal. The other artists just try to give you more qualified advice since you are NOT a noob. :)
There are some issues with the light. There are candles in the background, but they don't seem to result in highlights on the curtains, the girls' bodies or on some areas of the wall.
The main issue is the anatomy. Even if women are skinny, their lower arms and hands can't become that thin.
Now look at the upper girl's right arm (left from our view). Her elbow reaches down to her hip, but with correct anatomy a humans wrist aligns horizontically with the hip (give or take an inch). So obviously her arm is too long (since her lower body also doesn't look bent or anything). Both arms are not the same length either. The legs are not both the same length either and given the seam of her boot, her left leg (right from our view) is oddly curved. At the angle she is holding her lower foot, shouldnt there be a fold in the leather boot?
Now we are getting to the NSFW part again. I don't mind you or anyone else drawing stuff like that, but be aware that if you depict naked or half-naked people, your anatomy knowledge should be nearly flawless. Even if you wanna exaggerate any features or stylize them, you should really know what your doing.
I hope this is not discouraging to you, I just think some anatomy studies could help you a lot.
Check out www.posemaniacs.com or www.pixelovely.com and see where it gets you.
And before anyone else feels the need to say it: yeah I should practice human anatomy more myself.

He easily has some of the most atmospheric background paintings around. Even a worthless troll such as yourself can appreciate that.
Yeah, both skins look pretty damn cool in their own way. I prefered keepwalking's just because it reminded of a futuristic tribute to the old skyline design. Will there be a place on NG where we can look up all the past siteskins? I know there are websites that let you see older versions of another site, but a fancy overview somewhere on NG would be cool.

What do you mean with "qualitative"? The quality of the image file should be sufficient as submission icon and after all it's an in-game screenshot and the title you are using. If you are talking about adding custom graphics or creating custom art from scratch, then you should rather consider J-qb's offer. His art could seriously 1up the appearance if your game. But this kind of help doesn't come for free. And that's just fair.

Jonny's post pretty much covers it. If you are talking about the icon that is needed for submitting to NG (140x90 px) and still can't do it yourself, I'll do it when I get home. Just the icon though, no splash screen.

Allright, Im going to give you some critique.
The eyes are not on the same height, maybe this is on purpose but i dont think it will add to the derpyness.
Yeah, I already moved it a little down since my previous sketch after it has been pointed out before. But if it doesn't make it look derpy, I can move it down some more. Thanks, that's really helpful pointer.
you could however give him big eyelids, most retards have this.
Ok I tried it, hopefull I didn't overdo it.
also maybe put his tongue out of his mouth, and put a bigger smile on his face so his cheeks will bulge more.
I went for a bigger smile, don't wanna make his tounge stick out.
I think its a good sketch though!
Thanks for your feedback it was remarkably helpful.
There can't be enough WIPs, right?
It's an interesting theme, but definitely not the easiest for me to come up with an idea. lol
For all the others in search for inspiration, maybe this helps:
http://www.epicweird.com/the-craziest-beard-and-moustache-st yles
You could try to move it a bit to the left and a little up, that way Meatboy would be in the top left and the Castle Crasher would be between Bitey and Alien Hominid. If it's still too crowded you can still put them next to each other.
Christopher Walken
he should be in every movie
Ok, although it is not very likely that someone else will do it for you, it could help if you clear up something here. In your opening post you said, you want someone to edit an recolor sprites. Where are those sprites? Do you have any sprite sheets which you are allowed to modify and use? Or do you need someone to draw you sprites from scratch? Cause that's even less likely to happen, to be honest.

Apparently some people do mind the humor and it has even been questioned why he made it into a cartoon. And yeah even why he used a rabbit. I don't see a problem with both. Stylewise, I agree but I think it's the low line quality that gives it an even worse look. Decky, didn't you want to go over the lines again?
As for your piece looking like the emoticon, i had to look up which one you'd picked- i couldn't match it to one. The eyes are the main dissonance here.
I don't think it's thaaaat far from the emoticon. Making the eyes the same size and adjusting the left (right from our view) corner of his mouth to get closer to the emotes mouth, should make it more obvious. The bigger eye pretty much says "shocked" instead of the actual emote.
Color wise you've chosen purple and brown with a spot of teal. If you want suggestions, blue and brown tend to work well together because our brains are geared to find earth/sky combinations satisfying. There's a plethora of combinations that will work better than your current color system though.
Agree with that absolutely. I think you should drop the purple background and draw a new one, instead of giving up on the pic completely. Even if Spags doesn't accept it, in the worst case you end up with a nice cartoon.
Add some shade and highlight to the lower part of the ear, some highlight to the arm, some shading to the foot in the front and the white parts in his face also don't have any shading yet. Just generally, make the light and shade more consistent.
Slapping a filter over a finished drawing is usually frowned upon, but I like the grain you added somehow. Matter of personal taste I guess.
----------------------------
Since I don't know at what time I will be home today, I am going to post my most recent WIP. Keep in mind that the lines will disappear altogether, so don't worry about the sketchiness. I restarted my piece yesterday, so sorry that I don't have a lot more to show yet.
My main question is, is the emotion "derpy" enough? lol
Originally I just wanted to link this funny looking frog art contest here, but I must say the uproar about a little joke is both sad and embarrassing to me. Don't worry, I won't taint your precious, serious lounge for anytime soon.
See you on page 600 I guess.

I love the current site skin by keepwalking. Somewhat like a futuristic homage to the city skyline from the old NG design.
Just sayin'

The proper responses just take longer to type. I thought you learned that in the many years you run NG. :P
But seriously, although I failed for the thread, I am really glad that this is just a reminder rather than a real decision that you consider.
Look, I wish NG to become the biggest and most succesful website of all time, but seriously VC is a incredibly high risk for a site that's biggest resource is it's own soul. A soul made of regular and continuely contributing users, a rather young staff that is really close to its userbase (even though they have been even closer some time ago) and unique events derived from its very own history.
Can you keep this soul when there are investors watching all of your moves and decisions, who solely care for revenue? Can you NOT sell out? Will all of the staff still work with the same enthusiasm and have the same fun as before? This may sound like silly arguments, but this happened to many other websites before.
On the other hand, can you keep up with the development of the internet with no additional capital? Do you have plans to conquer the mobile internet market? Cause a big portion of your main audience already uses their phones for their "daily internet routine".
Both ways are dangerous. Going solo means winning or losing step by step. Going with VC means winning or losing with a big bang.
I personally love how NG is an independent place rather than another sad attempt of either Google or Facebook to win the upper hand in the "who owns the internet" war.
Ultimately you should ask yourself "Can we make it on our own?". If you see a realistic chance to grow without being dependent, I'd say go for it. I believe in you guys a million more times than in a hundred dozens of money craving vultures in grey suits.
NG went through many ups and downs over the years. When you were on the lowest point after that so-called internet bubble bursted, what do you think would have happened if investors had to decide how to continue with the site? Would NG still exist?
Wow some really nice papercrafts came in since the last time I checked.
Here comes mine: Big-Bunny-13!
Note to self: printing changes colors massively in comparison when your screen settings are very bright!

At 4/10/12 08:27 PM, Robotronic94 wrote: So which programs are best for pixel art, the first one says use Photoshop, but when I was looking at other websites for tutorials, they said that overcomplicates things. Is this true? Which programs do you prefer?
See Photoshop, Gimp and other costy or free programs have means to do pixel art. GraphicsGale however is specified for pixel art and spriting. I personally never used it, but I know it has some helpful features like a pixel grid, onion skinning and so on, that might help you. Did you check the limitations of the free version? The full version is not really something you might need if all you are going to do is still images. You can check the difference between the full and the free version here on this chart on the download page: http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/download.html
And yeah, you can use Photoshop and Gimp to do pixel art too. Simply select the pen tool and set it to the "1 pixel" in the brush selection menu. In Gimp you have to check a box for your eraser that reads "hard edge" to make it work properly for pixel art.
Extending the conversation by throwing in arguments you heard or read anywhere won't help you at all. You should consider trying out some programs until you find something you like yourself. Here is a list of FREE art programs that you could check, if you don't like Gimp and the free version of GraphicsGale:

Alright, now this is something really good. If you are looking fo things to work on, StrawberryClock's hands are not shaded yet, work over the remaining white ground and try (on a new layer preferably) how it looks if you add a yellowish secondary highlight on the 4 clocks standing under that light beam, so it looks as if the light is actually hitting them. Just a little highlighting should be enough there.
Good improvent yet again. :)
