I didnt really like Madness Rising, last year that style blew my mind, this year its the same thing so its sort of meh that it won again.

I kind of liked life in the portal one. Mainly cause it was a mock of madness and that made it refreshing from the pure violence themed ones.

Didnt find anything memorable about LLL ...

Its possible you have your actionscript set as AS3. that halloween preloader youre using is for AS2 so it wont work. I thought there was an AS3 version floating around, maybe not?

I dont think its a filter issue. That wouldnt affect the functionality of the preloader.

Anyway, i think that the death animations look great. I love the little blood bounce at the end of it. Your walk/run loops are stuttering on a frame. Might be able to resolve it by just snipping that frame out of it rather than trying to fix it.

Well Pigpen is notorious for being 'rebelious' ...youre talking about the guy who made the columbine game so i doubt he really cares, last man itself was mostly built to get a rise out of people anyway. I dont really think its greed, its just him being pigpen. I wouldnt really follow his lead if youre at all serious about it. Ads are a fine line because you flirt with peoples tolerance, if you break that tolerance its very hard to earn that trust back.

Read the last post in the thread. It stated that I postponed it. I would have announced if I canceled it.

Are you still going to go through with this collab using MY idea?

well... i kind of feel like this sort of collab was bound to happen anyway. Even if you never did end up creating it. Its just one of those inevitable things. Like a all tween collab, or even the time trials. It was bound to be created by someone and its bound to be recreated by someone.

... i dunno... i dont think its worthwhile to argue about it if its a creative project that people are excited about doing right now.

Good stuff, I would avoid shrinking the ad size on the API-served ads though. If your movie/game becomes super popular and they see you've shrunk it, you could get yourself blacklisted from serving ads by cpmstar. They sell 300x250's to the advertisers, you shrinking or hiding that ad size will piss them off.

well the problem is the staff is so small, most companies have a sales team or a group of qa people. We have Tom.

So we dont have a dedicated sales team pitching and negotiating specific ads into the site. Most of it is done by NG's parent ad agency where its probably done in bulk and ng is just one of the sites it ad-serves its inventory to.

So in summary, Tom will take care of it when hes back in the office. Which should be today sometime.
It seems the particular advertiser that I was complaining about uses annoying techniques as an approach. I should write 'em a letter stating: "STFU!" of course, it would have a nice body justifying why I made that statement. LOL. Heck it makes the clients look bad.

Yeah, its a money driven business, most companies that run ads 'want' those annoying types because they figure for the money they pay they should have an ad with every bell and whistle. Not really caring the fact that they are actually turning off potential customers by annoying them.

Then you have the ad vendor who then just takes the money the client is offering and runs with it as opposed to educating them on what works or doesnt on the internet.

My guess is that Arm & Hammer had some assets from their TV commercials handy and they figured they may as well use them onthe web and so they found an ad vendor that would allow it and so they snuck it into this site thinking you guys wouldnt mind em. but obviously you do and i cant blame you, it does ruin the experience.

Anyway patience is a virtue itll be fixed soon enough.

Heres liljim's post on it:

This has been explained many times in the past, but I'll do so again for clarity. The ads come from outside parties - the campaigns aren't very often chosen by NG at all. We do ask that they refrain from running campaigns with auto-playing music or sound, but some creep in now and then.

In case you missed his news post, Tom's been away in Denver since Thursday, so it's likely that he doesn't even know about these ads.

As is often the problem with this sort of thing, no specifics have been provided as to where this ad has been turning up - "a game in the portal" really doesn't help, since the ad campaigns sometimes differ according to the content rating of the page (adult/teen/mature/everyone), so without further detail, it's difficult to know which company to approach to ask them to remove that content.

If you're using firefox, you can right click on the page, go to view->page info, click the media tab, and see all the media files that are being served. You can then right click and select all, then right click and copy and then paste those details into a PM, which would give the actual addresses of any ads (amongst other files) that are being served and something for us to work from.

isn't there some sort of threshold? If you make one single mistake, everyone you scout looses privileges? Please tell me that just happens when someone repeatedly scouts bad stuff.

It depends on the moderator really. Its a very human system, situations are handled at the discretion of the moderator dealing with it.

Its a very hard system to fine tune, because it can get out of control so fast. Some people are scouted and the minute they are, they go on a spree of scouting everything and everyone they are friends with. Which while that is mighty nice of them, its not what the scouting system is for.

Anyway in turn when they scout someone, that scouted person now has the ability to scout and so you can see how it can get out of control fast if you scout a shit artist and said shit artist suddenly thinks ok my art got scouted so theres no reason i shouldnt scout shit artist B. and soon enough the art portal is drowning in crap.

If you really feel strongly about you being descouted feel free to PM me and i'll scout you myself if need be. Just keep in mind that its a large responsibility to be scouted and you have alot of pressure to be the quality control filter since there is no blamming like the flash portal.

At 9/28/09 09:57 AM, Scarab wrote: Without knowing too much about the Art Portal technically, I believe many of the problems of this sort with the scouting system come from the way that "the whole branch of the tree" being punished if one thing goes wrong. I'm not sure entirely, an art regular/mod would have to clarify for me, but I think you should check out the open discussion thread, where similar problems have been encountered, and you can ask any questions you might have. An art mod will probably pop by and answer it later.

And of course, you could PM an art mod (listed in the FAQ under Moderators) and wait for a reply. If a regular doesn't stop by here, hopefully those are good starters for you.

The moderating has been tweaked slightly so its not as harsh as it was when the art portal debuted, so there are subtle changes implemented without a huge announcement out of it.

Its a bit more forgiving now, but i think that the reason its so harsh is because the site really wants to encourage quality work when it comes to the art portal. You may submit sketches and disposable work but simply not check the box that says submit to portal. All your art can get catalogued on your page and only the quality pieces should be art portal tagged ones. I think thats been the toughest lesson to learn for people. Maybe its because the flash portal takes any and everything and so the mentality is the same?

The most likely scenario is that the person who scouted you is scouting crap (not necessarily you)

So when his tubes get tied and he/she is castrated it takes with him everyone he's scoutted wether they were awesome or not. So you could have just been caught in the tide.

This is why its important how sensitive the ability to scout is. You never want to scout someone that you dont feel strongly about that artist representing you.

Its also possible you were unscouted because you yourself scouted someone who didnt do anything but spam art/art that breaks the rules of the site.

Sometimes the really annoying ads squeak into the site and we have to pull em down manually.
Even though sites are told that we do not support ads with sounds or audio enabled video they do occasionally get into the circulation. So its just a matter of raising the flag on it.
