I don't think there will ever be a true separation of church and state though, since the fundamental morals of our society, not to mention the most basic laws, are partially or wholly based in religion.
These types of laws have been around most likely before religion started.
Besides the whole separation of church and state thing is to keep one religion from ruleing the entire country.
