I connected it to the VST-thing, but couldn't figure out how to use it. It takes me to this screen and then from there I can do nothing but click the x or go into setting I don't need to use.
Bleh... Acid music studio... That's the low end version... OK so you've added a VST - that's great. Now you'll need to create a MIDI track and feed that data into the VST that you've loaded.
To add a MIDI track, either right click anywhere and click "Insert MIDI track" or just press (Ctrl+Alt+Q).
Next - on your new track you'll see a little icon that looks like a keyboard with a number beneath it (the MIDI output) - click that ison and select the VST that you loaded as well as the channel to send data to (usually 1)
Now use your draw tool (Ctrl+D - icon looks like a pencil) and drag out a new MIDI clip.
Enable inline MIDI editing by pressing the "G" key
Use your mouse to adjust the size of the track and add your notes...
Acid is, in my opinion, a great sequencer. Once you get the hang of creating tracks, loading VSTs and routing MIDI to your instruments, you can start experimenting a bit with modulation - in addition to note data, you can also add envelopes for pretty much anything you like - things like Volume, pitch bend, aftertouch, program changes, etc. etc.
If you REALLY need some help - just PM me with specific questions and I'll tell you what you need to know... Please keep in mind that I use Acid Pro - the express version is probably similar but it may lack certain functions that I'm describing.
