This basically summarizes your first mistake. Never be afraid to fail miserably while drawing, learn from your failures and whatnot. Else you'll be at this level for a while.

Otherwise, "2D" is the word. I know you were trying to get into a sort of 2D art style but that shouldn't prevent you from thinking with form. A little light placement goes a long way, and you should really be thinking of those creatures as three-dimensional figures.
