Anyone in the UK watching this tonight?

Brief background for those who're not familiar with the programme: it's a political show that has a set of panelists, some of whom are politicians, some of whom are celebrities or newspaper columnists etc. There's an audience and they pose topical questions to the panelists.

This evening's panelists include Nick Griffin, head of the BNP, which is a right wing facist and racist party. People are up in arms over his appearance, to the point where some activists have broken into the broadcasting headquarters in protest:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8 321157.stm

People are upset over his appearance for his political beliefs, but more so over the fact that he's being allowed to appear on this show. I say let him go on there and show himself for the twat he is.

Personally, I'm quite looking forward to the show... If you're in the UK and use digital television services, you can press the red button and see a list of comments that stream in throughout it. They almost always make me laugh.

heh, I'd always assumed it was intentional, quite a few websites accept unicode characters and quite a few unicode charcters can be used for tom foolery, I always thought it was intentional that Newgrounds didn't allow them :D

These other sites probably aren't XHTML compliant and besides that, this is an English speaking website, so providing support for characters that other languages use are really on the lowest rung of the ladder of priorities. PHP6 will provide better support for that stuff, but I wouldn't expect to see those characters popping up as they should any time soon.

I would avoid doing this, for several reasons. The most important of which, is, if you plan on monetising your game by placing an ad in there, the sites that leech the content won't be able to load the game, as the files will be displaced. Check out the flash api:

http://www.newgrounds.com/lit/flashapi

Is there no way that you could parse the xml file and stick the contents into an AS file, import that into your FLA and then export the single SWF?

Define "useful". Everything we do around the site is "useful", but that doesn't mean to say that it's "useful" to the end user. In this case, it will, be, sort of, but more "useful" to us, since we'll have a better way of managing some data that's important to everyone.

Look, I'm not looking to publicly burn anyone in this thread, I've tried to be nice to people recently.

However, I suggest you get yourself a BIG dictionary, and bash the hell out of whoever taught you this rubbish with it.

"YOUR" is possessive.
"YOU'RE" is a concatenation of the words "YOU" and "ARE".

If you dismiss both of those words and go for the full words, "YOU ARE WELCOME" makes perfect sense, as does "YOU'RE WELCOME". Your (belonging to YOU) suggestion, on the other hands, doesn't.

It's the same difference with "IT'S" and "ITS" etc - the first is a concatenation, the second is possessive.

Now stop trying to derail the thread by pointing out grammatical errors that do not exist. Thank you. Or should that be "Thank your"?

Tomorrow morning at around 10:30ish, the site will go down for approximately 20-30 minutes.

Without going into nerdy detail, we're going to be re-tasking one of the databases.

After it's done, you won't experience any difference in performance from the site, and there isn't going to be anything that's changed with the appearance or behaviour of the site.

This is purely a utility upgrade, which will be transparent to all visitors, but it's a necessary one.

What exactly do you intend on seeing/doing if you do come to the UK? Going to London for the sake of going to London seems a bit silly to me, unless you have specific goals whilst being there.

I will say this, though - if you do decide to come over to the UK, keep to just one or two places where you might stay. It's a common misconception in the US that the UK is a small place, which by comparison it is. However, if you're not careful, you could spend half your time here travelling around and not actually seeing/doing what you might enjoy.

But yeah, elaborate on what you want to do when you get here, that way people will be able to offer other suggestions as to what you should do, where you should go, etc, providing you with more choices.

Two sets of footage about this kind of thing released in a week:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorse t/8304474.stm

It's not right to say that the mother in the first clip is negligent, btw. Many of my friends have just have kids and they're constantly tired and suffer from concentration lapses shortly after giving birth. The mother here got lucky, but it doesn't make her careless.

As far as I'm concerned, you don't have the right to judge this sort of thing unless you've had kids of your own, and I have a lot of sympathy for the mother in the first clip.

The one I've just linked, on the other hand... Well.

Go to the store, fill out all the details, other than the credit card, including shipping. That will give you a tally of what you should expect to pay. Print the page out, then send a money order to the office for the amount you're given. Address the envelope to Bob. He's done this before, so I don't see why he wouldn't do it again - just drop him a PM before you do, to confirm. That way, no credit card information has to be passed over.

At 10/14/09 07:13 PM, StrangelyMauled wrote: So is it still illegal if no cars are around? Then you aren't putting anyone in danger unless a few kids are allergic to water.

Driving with due care and attention means just that. If you see an obstacle ahead, whatever that might be, you take account for it, it doesn't matter if it's a puddle. The same sort of rule applies when it comes to not slowing down for a corner that's clearly marked and results in you going through someone's garden (though that could also fall under dangerous driving.)

It's a grey area when it comes to proving some of these offenses unless it's observed by the Police or by video footage, because any manner of things could be happening behind the wheel, like the driver passing out or whatever. The fact that this was all filmed from WITHIN the vehicle with accompanying commentary makes pushing these charges all the more easy for the authorities, though, it's a no brainer for them.

With every obstacle or potential issue on the road in the UK (or beside it, including pedestrians that might be harmed by what you're doing (like driving through something like this puddle at speed, which could potentially cause an accident of some sort)), you either slow down and go through or around it slowly, or slow to a stop before waiting to make sure you can pass that obstacle without hitting an oncoming vehicle, pedestrian etc.

You can see from that video that the driver does neither. I'm not saying that the video isn't funny, I'm just not getting why all of this is so difficult to understand.

No. This applies to people who do that sort of thing deliberately, not those who do it accidentally. Unless you're trying to imply that the video linked above portrayed the guys in the car doing that stuff by mistake, in which case I'd suggest you try watching it again.

This law falls as part of the Road Traffic Act under careless and inconsiderate driving. It's not that they've splashed the kids as such, it's that they're putting other road users under risk - the car could very well have aqua-plained or lost control and caused an accident.

I'm surprised this comes as news to anyone, it was explained to me by my driving instructor the first day I ever went out in the car when there was rain (of which there's always plenty in the UK..)

Publish settings of WHAT? The FLA you're publishing, or what you're doing with the WAV file when exporting it and then doing a fresh import into the FLA, before exporting the FLA to SWF? I can't stress how important it is to be as detailed as possible when you're describing problems like this, and what you've done to try and fix those problems.
