I have all my music on a staff. Is it on paper? No. Could it be on paper? Yes. I use a program to transcribe everything I write though. It's a lot easier then writing out quarter notes, writing in a key signature and whatever else. :)
There's a lot of ways to learn. Mess around with the program. Click around see what you can find. There's even tutorials within the program so you can look at them and see how to do specific techniques and what not. Just take some time looking for tutorials and you'll get it.
"Now.. the intention of this isn't to take away from people making new threads for albums as they come out.. those are nice just so that people know that something got released.. and hell.. we need to support each other."
That's in the first post of that thread. Threads are for new releases, that other thread is more of an archive.
If you remix the best thing to do is spice it up. There's a reason it's called a remix and not a redo. I've gathered some tips for remixing over the past years and they were ones I used for my Ice Cap mix.
My problem with the album is that most of the songs song like repeats of other songs with some minor difference added. There was room for better mixing because it didn't song like all the sounds came out as fully as they should have all the time, the one I can reference Free. There's a synth that plays in the background being covered by some pads. It's a lot better then what I was making when I was 13 though so I can see some definite improvement in the next few years.
1. 4/4 time signature.
2. Straight eighth notes on the hi hat.
3. Crash cymbal on beat one every other measure.
4. Bass drum on one and three.
5. Snare on two and four.
6. Any guitar riff with a straight 8th note pattern as well.
7. Make the bass follow the guitar completely.
8. Don't write any melody what-so-ever.
9. Generic rock song done.
I'm more excited about the EQing portion of the tutorial then the actual spectroman part, since I really have no clue what it is. I'm sure I'll learn though. I have a grand feeling I've done a lot of unnecessary and rough work with my EQing technique though.
Johnny Rabb and JoJo Mayer are drummers known for their fast paced DNB styles so I'd recommend looking them up, even though they're not actually specific bands.
There's also Cell Dweller, but they're more of an electronica/rock fusion band.
If you find a scale you like that usually helps with the writing of future songs. One of my dominant scales is D minor and D Harmonic minor. That's not to say I don't write in other scales, but having a more dominant scale gets my ear used to writing with specific notes. It may or may not help you when trying to continue on from a dead zone in creativity.
Blackhole12 is an awesome music producer. His songs are amazing and I have no idea why they're not all in the top 5. He did get a front page once and in the late 20's of the top 30 another time, but that's about it. His songs are flawless and I downloaded about half of them ^^ (that's a lot) so he's surely an underdog.
I have to agree with this so I'm going to have to nominate Blackhole12 as well. Besides being a great producer he's also a great teacher. He created a sytrus tutorial that goes over synth creation with great detail, probably one of the most useful tutorials. One of my favorites by him is On the Edge. A great original work of art.
I usually change my structure for every song. I've used a structure like ABACADAE before. It's all about preference, though it is true that most pop/vocal music will have a verse chorus structure.
If you need live drums though, I am not the man. I don't have the proper equipment to get a decent recording, but I could still write a drum part if you want.
As far as songs with metal drums in them this is the only one I have to offer that is posted on newgrounds. The mixing isn't too great but it gets the point across, just give awhile.
I'm entering this contest way late. I haven't been on for a long time so I really missed this, but it seems interesting and I want to do this. I've got something rough worked out, but after reading further into the thread I don't think it'll work, so I'll probably twist it into a personal work instead and try to get a quick four days work in on this thing.
This is interesting for me, because I'm interested in going into the same field. I don't think I could make it personally as a solo artist, but I'm interested in going into this specific field. I have two years left of High School, so I'll definitely pay attention to what this topic has to offer.
