and now...the story of christmas [even though its easter]
The Vikings held festivals in mid december, called blót, meaning, blood. There are two Blots, the Elven Blot, and the Völse Blot, but every 9 years there was a special blot, which, is what this post is about. ok first...
Elven blot [Quoted from wikipedia because the only part i want to tell, wiki doesnt have articles on, so im letting them fill in the easy stuff]
"The Elven blót was small scale and was celebrated at the homestead and led by its mistress. Not much is known about these rites, since they were surrounded by secrecy and strangers were not welcome during the time of the rituals. However, since the elves were collective powers closely connected with the ancestors some assume that it had to do with the ancestor cult and the life force of the family." -From Wikipedia.org
Völse blót [Last part from wiki]
"The Völse was the penis of a stallion, and the rites surrounding it are described in Völsa þáttr. It was taken from a stallion during the autumn butchering, and it is said that the mistress of the homestead considered it to be her god, and kept it in a coffin together with linen and onions. In the evening everybody gathered in the main building. Even the thralls and the farmers' daughter and son took part in the sacred rite.
The mistress presented the penis from the coffin, greeted it with a prayer, and let it pass from person to person. Everybody greeted it with the religious phrase May Mörnir receive the holy sacrifice!. The strange word Mornir probably means female Jotuns, because in Haustlöng faðir mörna is used as a kenning for Jotun. The rite may have represented a marriage between Völse and a female Jotun, i.e. Frey and Gerd. It is obvious, however, that the rite concerned fertility and that even the giantesses were worshiped with special rituals."
ok now, my part......
every 9 years, the main festival of blot [usually only sacrificing animals] sacrifices, instead, 9 different animals were sacrificed [Including humans....usually irish slaves] and hung from trees around the center. The Germans, signified this tradition by taking trees and decorating them with things.....and during ww1, they passed it on to americans [americans did this before that point, because alot were of germanic decent, but after ww1 everyone did it] another tradition americans picked up, besides the yule log, was the stocking filled with gifts....in germany, in older times, the day before christmas, they would leave their shoes by the bed, if they were good, they would be filled with candy, if they were bad, there would be a stick left by it, meaning you are being bad, and knecht reprecht will come if ya dont cut it out. [Knecht reprecht, in germany if ya good, santa comes, if ya bad knecht comes, kidnaps you, puts you in a sack and beats you with a stick, then drowns you in the rhine river (france has somthing simular)] on a side note to that......
a few years back in america, there were a few arrests down south of fathers dressing up in black and beating their children on christmas, being knecht reprecht, this was somthing that was also done in old germany. on a last uplifting note, there was a problem for a long time of germans cooking their children [just like the grims stories, which are also all german stories] because they couldnt afford to feed them, a practice the vikings also did...
not making any of it up, hope someone is interested.
oh and also, can someone tell me how do i make the ng viking army come up under my name in post? i have no idea. Thanks.
"Leidolfr, hmm... the guardian wolf?"
Leidolfr is a person that shows up in a few vicelandic sagas, but ive only heard him mentioned in Njalls saga. as for meaning, "r" at the end makes it a noun, and thats only in old norse, so in the sagas its actually leidolf, which means [very Loosly] Lone wolf
": You're German, Nowrwegian AND Swedish?...wow..
Also, please don't post "l guess l'm in", "can l join?" is more appropriate, even if you know that we are going to accept."
