yeah because of the obscurty and the conflicting texts, id have to say ragnar is mythically, and MAYBE based on actual happenings, in a very loose way.

as for the nibelungen, more can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nibelungenl ied

"" The Nibelungenlied is based on pre-Christian Germanic heroic motifs (the "Nibelungensaga"), which include oral traditions and reports based on historic events and individuals of the 5th and 6th centuries. Old Norse parallels of the legend survive in the Völsunga saga, the Prose Edda, the Poetic Edda, the Legend of Norna-Gest, and the Þiðrekssaga.""

This story has been told variantly for a long time, and we get a few things out of it, Lord of the rings is based not so much on the story, but the concept and then a bunch of other stolen shit [lol] also, rhinegold beer [again, lol] as the Rhine river is supposed to have gold hidden there, under it, and is guarded by the german variant of Mermaids, sirens, and Huldras, mixed [Huldra was a scandinavian forest dweller that looked like a woman, but had a tail, she would usually be blonde, and attractive, and she would lure you to sleep with her, and if you pleased her you would have great wealth and knowledge, but if you dissapointed her you would go insane]

You should reboot into Safe Mode with Networking to make sure that it's not just your internet connection fucking up before automatically assuming that malicious software is the problem.

I dont even think its viral, but somthing is making it suck, either because ares is a mexican program and the users are far out, and therefor slow, or somthing, I dont know

ok, so I use Ares, and I use it to download full movies, but its just horrible with transfer rate speed. I downloaded Gummo, for instance, and it took me 3 days to download it, then only like 5 min. to convert it.

so is there ANYTHING I can do, or is it totally reliant on the users im downloading from?

I do have Njal's saga, however I haven't read it yet. What the hell were you reading :P

i didnt notice it, must have missed it

anyways, about this ragnar business,.....

In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Ragnar was said to be the father of three sons, Halfdan, Inwaer (Ivar the Boneless), and Hubba (Ubbe), who led a Viking invasion of East Anglia in 865 seeking to avenge Ragnar's murder. In the European literature of the several centuries following Ragnar's death, his name is surrounded with considerable legend. In the Gesta Danorum (c. 1185) of the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus, he was a 9th-century Danish king whose campaigns included a battle with the Holy Roman emperor Charlemagne. According to Saxo's legendary history, Ragnar was eventually captured by the Anglo-Saxon king Aella of Northumbria and thrown into a snake pit to die. This story is also recounted in the later Icelandic works Ragnars saga lodbrókar and Tháttr af Ragnarssonum. The 12th-century Icelandic poem Krákumál provides a romanticized description of Ragnar's death and links him in marriage with a daughter of Sigurd (Siegfried) and Brynhild (Brunhild), figures from the heroic literature of the ancient Teutons. The actions of Ragnar and his sons are also recounted in the Orkney Islands' poem Háttalykill.

[ From http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topi c/489597/Ragnar-Lothbrok ]
--------------------------------------
"The contemporary historical records of the ninth century (when Ragnar Lothbrok supposedly lived) show only one Viking of the correct name, a Viking named "Reginheri" (a Latin form equivalent to the name Ragnar) in France who died in the year 845, according to the contemporary Frankish annals [Annales Bertiniani, or the Annals of St. Bertin]. The emphasized words in the previous sentence are often conveninetly overlooked by those who wish to use Reginheri as a historical prototype for Ragnar Lothbrok. Since Reginheri died in France in the year 845, he cannot have participated in the later events which form the principal part of the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok's exploits.
In addition, there is no good evidence that Reginheri was the father of any of the individuals who later came to be regarded as sons of Ragnar Lothbrok. Thus, Reginheri fails to satisfy the criterion mentioned above. No other historical Norseman named Ragnar is known for the appropriate time period."

[ From http://www.scangen.se/medieval/ragnar.ht m ]
---------------------------------------

England, 845 - "The ship of King Ragnar Lothbrok of Sjaelland & Uppsala (Scandinavia) is supposedly blown off course and he lands in East Anglia. He is entertained at the Royal Court but internal politics leads to him being kidnapped and smuggled into Northumbria where he is executed in a pit of vipers. Glastonbury Abbey is probably damaged by Viking raiders. Ealdorman Eanwulf of Somerset defeats them at the Battle of the River Parrett. First written record of the county of Somerset."

To get a bunch of questions out of the way right now...
A)I have to ask, does anybody know of any other viking-related message boards?

B) What do you guys recommend I get next as far as books? History books or Sagas, doesn't matter.
Also, I Forget to mention in first post that I also have the Penguin Viking Atlas :)
C) Recently I've been trying to find more information on Ragnar Lodbrok/Lothbrok, however I'm having trouble finding stuff on him. What texts are he mentioned in? About the only thing I could find was the wikipedia article which seemed to be very contradictory. I read that there is a Ragnar's Saga, but I can't find an english translation of it anywhere :\ I'll ask more once somebody else posts XD

Thats funny, I liked the last two better

ok questions....

A.) I dont know any specfically, but im sure f you google "viking message board" or "Viking Forum" you'll get somthing

B.) Next book, I notice you have alot of the sagas, but no Njalls saga, Njalls saga was, in my opinion the more of the complex, in depth sagas, and I consider it to be the best over all.

C.) Ragnar Lothbrok, I don't know, but I'll do some hunting tonight and see what turns up.

"The tester of shields came south To bring home the tools of war To the prayer-forge In the poet-warrior's breast Then the tester of battle-faith Brought the hammer of death Crashing down on the anvil Of Vetrlidi's head (Njal's Saga)"

"I do not mind mocking the gods For I think Freyja's a bitch It must be one or the other Either Odin's a dog or else Freyja (Njal's Saga)"
