Okay, maybe that first sentence makes people not want to read what I say later in my post, but I was saying that muslims never mass-murdered Jews on purpose like they did in Europe for ages. I'm not saying no jew ever got killed by a muslim.
Nope. How do you think Islam started? Mohammed went on a "convert or die" campaign.
The "convert or die" campaign that you speak of only refers to infidels, and Christians and Jews weren't considered to be full infidels. Muslim leaders tolerated the jewish and christian minorities in their realms. There was still a jewish community in Jerusalem when the crusaders went in and killed anything living there, and the Assyrian and Egyptian christian communities were also tolerated and still exist today. Radical muslims may hate everything that isn't muslim today, but that's relatively new, a hundred years old at max.
And how do you think the Moors captured Jerusalem? The Jews didn't just hand over the key to the city with a smile.
When the muslims captured Jerusalem for the first time the jews didn't hand over the key with a smile because they didn't own that key - the Byzantines did. The Moors and the Saracens captured Jerusalem after the crusades, meaning that the crusaders would have had that key. The Jews didn't control Jerusalem in the period 50 BC - 1948 AD. There is no reason to massacre locals when you capture a city held by foreigners.
Hell, what about ancient history? The Muslims and Jews have been fighting since they've existed.
Nonsense. I'm pretty sure Jews and Muslims lived together peacefully when they were ruled by the Turks and before the crusades.
In every conflict, innocent people die. In ancient conflicts, innocents were slaughtered pretty regularly when a city fell. To say that Muslims never slaughtered innocent Jews is ignorant, as is saying that Jews never slaughtered any innocent Muslims.
Muslims were known to go easy on the people they conquered, but I can't say for certain that no jewish village ever got massacred; although it would have been very unlikely since the holy land was held by Byzantines. And if it happened then it wasn't because of their race or religion! So again: I'm saying no muslim ever slaughtered jews because they were jewish. The first sentence of my first post was too extreme, but my point should have been clear after reading the entire thing.

What I said was:
At 6/6/05 05:57 AM, lapis wrote: What? Muslims never slaughtered innocent jews (at least not before the fundamentalist wave that started in the 20st century).
9/11 and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict both happened during or after the fundamentalist wave. I you had read my post then you'd know that I was referring to the way muslims treated jews in medieval times. Muslims never massacred a jewish village just because they were jewish - at least not with the blessing of their leaders.
And in the past fifty years in Israel Palestinians never 'slaughtered' Isrealis. Blowing up a bus is awful but it isn't a massacre - soldiers eradicating a large number of civilians is called slaughtering. Like what the Israelis did in Sabra and Shatilla in 1982.
Even when we're taking the events you mentioned into consideration it still pales in comparison to the number of jews killed by christians. The other guy claimed that we should be pissed off at muslims for killing jews.
At 6/5/05 06:29 PM, fenrus1989 wrote: or we can be pissed off of thier invasions of the holy land and the slaugher of innocent jews.
What? Muslims never slaughtered innocent jews (at least not before the fundamentalist wave that started in the 20st century). Jews had to pay higher taxes because they didn't have to serve in muslim armies, and maybe judges were harder on jewish criminals, but no jew had to convert to islam in order to stay alive. Whenever something bad happened in the west, like a plague, the church blamed the jews, usually resulting in a pogrom. And the holocaust wasn't carried out by muslims. So I don't see why any Westerner should be pissed off at muslims for what they did to the jews.
And muslims were fighting christian Byzantines when they invaded the holy land, who had invaded the holy land about 800 years earlier. So if "invading the holy land" and "killing jews" are your reasons for being pissed off at muslims, then you should consider being pissed off at yourself.

Why? There are only four countries that don't follow the US in everything they do: France, Belgium, Germany and Spain (since Zapatero got elected). And even these countries are members of the NATO. And assuming you are British, I really wouldn't worry about an American invasion - I can't remember the British government disagreeing with the US gov't about... anything.

Most socialist politicians supported the constitution, but 60% of the socialist-supporting population voted "no". Most thought that the constitution was too liberal. People don't follow their leaders that easily anymore, not even when they're elected.

Läwl, even though it might not be very political, that was pretty good.
Okay: I've made up my mind: I'm not voting. My government already said that a "no" wouldn't have any domestic political consequences, and with the constitution being dead, I don't see any reason to vote. It's going to be a certain "no" here anyway. This entire referendum has been one big waste of money. Our government actually spent 3.5 million on the "yes" campaign; now I'll feel a lot better when paying taxes.

Not only that but each has unique and conflicting cultures that have been opposing each other since the dawn of time. Would such a country last? I think not! >_<
True, look at Switserland. They speak German, French, Italian and Rhaetoroman and yet they've ben a stable country for over 700 years. The EU has over 40 languages now, though. Maybe they should force Esperanto on all EU citizens :)
And our cultures aren't conflicting - all European nations evolved into liberal democracies at some point in the past few centuries. So there's not that much to fight about. Liberal capitalism is what binds Europe and they don't make war against each other, unlike dictatorial nations. War is bad for the economy when you're fighting your own potential customers.
But it is not the EU I and most Europeans want, we want a social state, were noone will be pour, and their will be more than just white people rulling, were the people who do their job best, rule (after they have been chosen).
Word :)
Anyway, I can vote for the referendum tomorrow! Whoop-dee-doo! There are just two problems:
1) The French killed it so I'll be voting whether or not we should ratify a dead constitution.
2) About 60% of the Dutch population is going to vote "no".
Now I know, voting matters, but I can't help feeling like voting is a waste of time. Maybe tomorrow I'll feel strongly towards voting, but I doubt it. Democracy is a great thing but we haven't got that much to choose from.

Yeah I know, but Greece didn't last. It's art was hauled to Rome, it's culture got copied in a pretty lame way and the land itself became a tourist resort. I'm not saying we should be just like Rome, but we shouldn't make the same mistake the Greeks made over 2000 years ago.

It's going to be hard for Chirac. 55% voted against it, with an overall turnout of 70%. The people who voted against it outnumber the supporters by at least a million. He can't just organise a second referendum and expect a "yes". If he ratifies the constitution anyway the voters will eat him alive.
The constitution is dead anyway; yesterday the French, wednesday the Dutch and the British next year. it's going to take a lot of negotiating to get any sort of constitution through now.

We're stuck watch the Jackson molestation case for a long while.
Well it's kinda late now but if you still want to know what it was about:
this explains the main issues. You can also find the entire document on that site - 325 pages of unreadable garbage. That's one reason why I also considered voting against it - if they want us to give our opinions about a document, at least make sure that we can read it. How big is the US constitution anyway? I doubt it's 325 pages.

That's going to be tough, they spend 2 and a half years negotiating about this one. And the EU reacting fast to something big, it would be a first. But maybe this is a positive experience - it teaches the leaders of the Union a lesson in decision making.

danku :P
Some time ago I read on www.raptureready.com an article about how the EU was about to become a new empire, spawn the Antichrist and take over the world. Well the world is safe for a little longer - the French have just whacked the EU constitution, and my people are about to do the same. It was a crappy constitution, and I hated it as well, but maybe it was our only shot. It's vital that the EU becomes one power block - the European economies are hardly growing while China and India are booming, and talented students migrate to the US whenever they have the opportunity. To make matters worse, oil is going to run out in about 50 years, and by that time the EU has to be able to negotiate oil contracts as one strong coalition, or we'll be reduced to Third World Countries or American vassal states.
It's sad though, I recall some American author, Kagan or something, saying that the US was like ancient Rome and Europe was more like Greece. All Greek potential was wasted because every little city-state only cared about it's own interest. The EU is no different - there are 25 members and they all have the right to veto, meaning that only the most unimportant laws get through. Whenever there is a need to act quickly either nothing happens (Yugoslavia) or a few members ignore the other members and join up with some international superpower (Iraq). The constitution didn't get rid of the veto rights when it came to international politics, but it did in most other circumstances. And it said that one European foreign affairs minister was to be appointed, meaning that the EU would have one 'face' when it came to international affairs. Now even these changes are further away than ever.
I think what happened yesterday was pretty bad for Europe as a whole. The new constitution was far from perfect, and I also wanted to vote against it at one time, but now Europe is just as weak as before. I bet Kagan is laughing pretty hard right now.
Learn the their language, breed with their wives, and in time, our differences will be forgotten. I can't believe no one said this yet - I'm disappointed in you >:(

Yeah, okay, but nobody hates pot-smoking surfer dudes from California. When he says: America is homophobic, he means the majority of it's population, not everybody. The stereotypical American is a fat arrogant trigger-happy moronic born-again christian from the Great Plains, and that's what people seem to hate. I know, not all Americans are like that, especially on Newgrounds, but when you ask why people hate America, people will explain why they hate this specific stereotype. Ignorant? Maybe. But face it, your president seems to represent the stereotype described above, and you (majority) voted for him.
But I guess most of you shouldn't be offended when somebody explains why he hates the US. Unless you're a stereotype.

People hate America because of the racism? How about South Africa? Apartheid has only been abolished for a lousy 14 years and nobody hates them for it. And the genocide in Sudan - blacks being massacred by arabs, nobody gives a damn. I guess some Americans weren't exactly nice to blacks in the past but that doesn't explain why they're being hated.

Meh, I live in Holland and I never heard anyone about hating America when Clinton was president. I remember that he visited this country once. He was in his car and a few people were on the sidewalk waving at him, so he pulled over and started shaking hands. It was on the news, and they also showed a guy calling his wife saying "honey, you're not going to believe this: I shook hands with the president of the US". If Bush would pull over people would throw bricks at him.
Bush really had a major influence on the anti-American wave we've seen in the past few years, the first thing he did was not ratifying the Kyoto protocol for example. And I think a lot of people didn't like the way America responded after 9/11. The nationalism, the cry for muslim blood. And then Iraq to make it all worse. The last time America was hated was during the Viernam war (under Johnson) and maybe a little during the Reagan years. Also the way Bush views the world: black or white, with us or against us. And don't forget that he represents America, even when you say that a lot of Americans hate him as well.
