Multiple elements - EQ Posted March 8th, 2013 in Audio

This may sound a bit noobish (well of course, it's from me).

As long as I have the kick and the bass, I know how things work. Just equalize both cutting useless frequencies, making room for each instrument. Boosting a little the key frequencies, lowering others, etc.
Let's start to add another kick: no problems. Claps, snares and hats are all fine too, if a good EQ is done.

Problems come when we start to add other percussions. With all those drums there is small room for other percussions (there is still a lot of room for other instruments, though).

What are the solutions?

1) Lowering some channels' volume?
2) Removing unnecessary channels? (2 percussions instead of 3, only claps and no snares, etc)
3) What else?

Basically the question is: when there is no room left for the mix, what do?

By actively, I don't mean blasting music while you jump up and down (hah!), but by listening intently and critically. If you like something in a song, what is it that clicks with you? The mixing? The harmonies? The instrumentation? What don't you like? By trying to focus in on as many details as possible, you'll not only improve your ear, but you might get some awesome ideas to inspire you to write.

Yes I totally agree on this.
Sometimes when I'm listening to music (I've got a big garage with some big speakers :D) I have 2, 3 methods of listening: one is just listen and enjoy, another one is ofc dance and the last one is "Why the hell is this song so good/catchy/awesome?"

When in last mode I try to get a general view of all the instruments and the "patterns" and how they're used. Like, every 8 bars there's a variation, the effects and transitions, etc.

; )

etc

Great tips David.

For me, I'm still a noob and a beginner, but I keep practising almost daily (when I have time ofc). Today, things that years ago seemed impossible are now easier ^^

Good luck

i have like 20-30 usernames all along the webs, one of the oldest is from 2000-2001, "mercuri_test+". yes, there is the "+" also because I mistyped it.

btw Nitrorama has the R problem.

NITROSAUR is good, but it seems too "explosive" and "aggressive".

Chances are Nitrosaur or a new one

I'm trying to get a general name, btw it's for music.

At the moment, the best one is "Nitrorama", but it sounds, as someone said, too explosive.

Let's go with Nitrorama?

Good luck everyone guys

frootza managed to do a nice replica of the Mega 'Lo Mania synth, good job there froo.
There are various ways to do it, but it seems the faster/easier one is make a choir/flute sound, add a piano/plucked or mallet instrument (froo did it with a guitar, and it sounds good too!), layer all together and tweak it with some effects and volume balancing.

Case closed (for this synth...) =)

Thank ya all

Yep, probably the easiest solution is just a bright piano with low volume and good settings, by the way thanks guys I managed to replicate a similar one using the M1 vst (I wish I had the keyboard), it sill needs some tweaks but it's a good raw sound lol ^^

Thank you!

I know what Ogun is, but is one of the VSTs that I never used, will look into it. Btw for the choirs in my song I used Dsk Choirz and a bit of Galactix, both cool vsts.

Thank you both guys!

Advertising, luck, and possibly a bit of originality (at least, at first). No, I'm not kidding. (assuming you meant to add the "is easy" above)

Yeah I ate some words.
I still don't see why someone would say "doing x is harder than y", when obviously it comes from experience, skills and other things.

I can touch my tonsils with my toungue, but for some people is hard (if not impossible), lol

I'm so stupid and noob I can't even figure out this simple synth... After the eargasm that come at 1:43, the sound I'm talking about is heard. It's obvious a layered sound, the lead itself and a second sound, the second is simple to reproduce, I took an instrument and modified it a bit; the main sound is unreproduceble (at least) for me. What kind of wave/filter is there? With VSTs do you reccomend? Maybe I can get the same results layering some other similar sounds?

Thanks

btw it all depends, there's a friend of mine that plays pianoforte, violin and another classical instrument, and he doesn't even know what a DAW is

Not that simple, people have different opinions about making a thing.
I made a song, but I didn't use my drums. Someone else made a song, but used a melody of a videogame; someone else again made a cool dancefloor track, but the bassline was copied... etc.

There was a guy here who said a cool thing about making things, like we never make things (you produce music with pc? you didn't make your pc, etc)

Yeah, let's not discuss anything at all, sounds great. :p

Seriously though, apart from the "I don't give a shit, so neither should you, stop crying"-attitude - are there any logical, comprehensible reasons for adding pointless categories (chipstep, nerdcore) while NOT adding categories that would improve the overall organization & usability (World has been mentioned, another Metal category, a chiptune category and so on). "The admins want it" is no good reason, it's just disinterest / obedience / trolling / whatever.

It's not about adding 500 categories. A few important ones would do, instead genres someone just pulled out of his arse get added. Which is funny, but not really beneficial.

Not making any advertise, but try to listen to my last two songs (I have only two btw): they are just inclassificable, like 75% of the work here. I'd suggest making some macro-categories, than adding what you need with tags. If you ask me I don't even know what chipstep is
