So hi...kind of interesting to see this post that a friend of mine directed me to. Interesting because I am Katie Whitaker , the "angsty little shit" who this article was written about when I was 21 years old. Well, I'm 30 now and I'd like to clear a few things up for all of you who had such strong opinions on something you don't know JACKSHIT about.
1.) Donors in the 80's WERE NOT SCREENED like they are today. In fact, my donor didn't even have his family healthy history because he was adopted.
2.) I WASN'T LOOKING FOR A FATHER OR IN ANGST. I was simply curious about the guy I looked like. I had and have a wonderful father, the man who taught me to walk, swim and ride a bike; who was at all my school plays and who I still call Daddy even though I am grown.
3.) My donor CHOSE TO HAVE CONTACT WITH ME. All I did was let it be known that I was curious about who he was and he took the steps to initiate further communication. If he had chosen to just say "Hey kid, I'm allergic to cats, my favorite color is blue, I did well in the social sciences at school but bombed Chemistry. Have a nice life." I would have left it at that. It was just like anyone else who gets on Ancestry.com or ever looked up where their great-great-grandparents came from. I didn't show up on his doorstep or call his house without him being okay with it.
4.) Finally...I DIDN'T SIGN ANY CONTRACT WITH ANYONE. If you want to enter into a contract...make sure you consider all parties involved, the sperm banks don't and that is the problem with the entire industry. Yes, I know, without it I wouldn't exist, but that doesn't mean the way they conduct business is right. The sperm banks, donors and doctors are all after one simple thing...cash. I understand that that is the purpose and motive of business, but tell me what other industry is in the business of CREATING LIVES. If you don't want the possibility of a child you help create possibly showing up in your life one day, here's the answer...KEEP YOUR D**K IN YOUR PANTS!!!
Thanks so much for your time. Xoxo! Muah! Kisses and all that sweetness ;)
