It is possible to be social and athletic and still like to play Pokemon. You shouldn't maintain an interest in something only for as long as it is cool. Then it's just people living life by what they think everyone else will think of them, or what everyone else is doing.

Response to: RE: You People Posted June 18th, 2008 in General

Quite correct.

Even mildly boring or specific topics/questions that aren't an attempt at humour that attract some kind of minimal conversation is way better than most of the annoying ones. I didn't make any of these topics about the state of the forums personally but I did stop posting the last couple of months, or even the last 2 years. But I think a small amount of dumb topics keep things fresh too. However the amount of crap at the moment is too much.

I've had some personal experience with very similar family problems.

The best advice I can offer is to find an emotional counsel and support in friends and find a couple of reasonable and beneficial distractions. Like hobbies or something.

Have you tried bringing up your concern about college to your dad?

Well thanks for putting it into perspective for me there gfox. Good to see you are still doing your thing, by the way.

I've recently begun depositing my exp regularly so we'll see how far I get after 10,000. I've already passed 20-something people after becoming active again. Let's hope there's more to come.

Response to: Gin & Tonic Taste Posted February 24th, 2008 in General

Gin tastes kind of like pine as a previous reply stated. It doesn't taste exactly like that.. it just sort of reminds me of it. Mainly it is considered a very refreshing drink for the warm months.

It really depends what kind of gin you get too, because companies like Bombay have a sapphire blend that is distilled from berries and other natural crap from all these different countries, and there are something like 5 or 6 different grains in it.

It's expensive as shit though. I recently bought a litre of Gordons London Dry (most common) gin for 16 dollars at a duty free on my way back from the states, but usually a 26oz bottle will cost at least 25 dollars in canada.

Response to: RetroGade Layout Posted January 28th, 2008 in Art

I think the concept of RetroGade was really not very solid as an idea when Bedn ran it. Itt was focussed more on how similar it was to Newgrounds than to actually providing the internet with a decent image portal.

It attracted an insanely tiny and limited audience that burned out, and what was left wasn't worth basing the site around a second time without some serious considerations.

For instance, try to make it completely different from NG. Even as far as scrapping the image portal idea and thinking of something a bit more inventive that hasn't been seen before.

I'm basically saying that if you just put up a more flashy NG clone, and ignore drawing attention and respect towards its main focus, which is image making, then it would be a waste of time.

Straight black is just, as a rule, not used in painting. It provides too much of a disconnect (example in my picture) from the value spectrum.

Even if something is really black, it is best to use a dark dark version of some other colour instead.

If it's a wallpaper, why are they all vertically oriented?

The drawings are fine but they need a composition or it won't work.

Well your scribble isn't really much of anything at this point. Real drawing would involve you constructing the shape and actually making a decent image based how well drawn it is, not the fact that it may or may not look decent as a pile of scribbles.

I haven't painted with acrylics for an extended period in well over 3 years.

Then last Wednesday I sat down and did a few speed paintings. This is one of them.

Response to: Lulz Im Gud At Photos Posted January 14th, 2008 in Art

It's true what others here have said about the sky being repetitive. However, having a dozen or so good sky shots isn't a bad thing to have for a portfolio.

You can now try adding more collections, such as composed objects, or a number of photos that have the same lighting or theme (other than a sky).

This is sometimes how I arrange my process work, sketchbooks mostly. I have different sketchbooks set aside for different media and subject matter also. I started doing this because several professionals in my soon to be field also do it.

You seem to have a pretty good grasp on the compositional facets that make a photograph look aesthetically pleasing, and that's pretty cool.

A great number of you are drawing a block right before the bones of the fingers when, in fact, those carpal and metacarpal bones are actually clusters of smaller pea-shaped bones.

But you are probably not getting into realism with this stuff anyway.

Your lines and perspective skills are pretty good. Your line work is better than your coloured stuff but you're okay in that too.

Personally though, I don't really like anime.

An Inconvenient Truth.

We're programmed to live beyond our means. Just like a beehive will rpoduce more bees or honey than it can hold and falls apart... or something like that.

It is a problem - even if it is our eventual destiny. The problem may even present itself in our lifetime - but the real issue is with our children and grandchildren who will have to live in the world we make.

I saw in an article something that said anyone born between 1985-2015 will have to save the world from what the babyboomer generation has done.

Your scanned drawing should be on a separate layer, then you set its layer properties (theres lighten, darken, color dodge, etc) to MULTIPLY.

Now make a color layer where you will paint and make that a MULTIPLY LAYER too. now your lines wont be blotted out. It's really easy. Easier than the other options.

And you can edit out the original without damaging the colour or any other layer you add there.

I wouldn't bother with photoshop until you have a confident ability in traditional rendering. Otherwise you're wasting hundreds of dollars dicking around with stuff when you don't even know the basics of drawing by hand.

Response to: Coaly's art thread Posted November 20th, 2007 in Art

Gesture drawings really are far more effective in stuff like the whole figure where you need to effectively and accurately capture a pose or a movement without getting hung up on the details in the body. It serves as an aide to easier identify and accurately depict things that you're drawing from observation.

A face (like the one you posted first in this thread) has details that ought to be carefully rendered - but the positioning should be done carefully after you've done the structure.

So I'm saying - when you're doing a head exclusively, concentrate on the angles, and mark the eye/lip/mouth/brow lines.. and remember when you are doing the guiding circle for the ear on the side of the head, make sure it is placed on the lower right section of the circle (it has 4).

If you're serious about getting your figure down REALLY effectively, take a few life drawing classes. They pay off if you are serious about it.

That's one way of getting them. That's why Tom Hanks got them in Cast Away, cause he never shampooed his hair.

But usually dreads need to be washed quite frequently if they are made like this. So really, it's as clean, if not cleaner than other hair choices.

I think they look pretty good.

It shouldn't be physically addictive, so just go back to maybe once a month or so.

I know what you mean about the decrease in focus. I smoke maybe once every couple of months and when I started I used to get those same effects. Only very briefly. You might also just be paranoid that its doing something, as it has not affected your grades. But I wouldn't doubt it's having some sort of impact. Once a week is still pretty tame compared to people I know who would smoke 8 blunts a day, which is an extreme case.

Thumbs up.

WEARING 2 CONDOMS CAUSES FRICTION AND TEARING, thus pregnancy = much more probable.

Condoms are a measure against STDs. I doubt the HIV virus can pass through it, but then I haven't done much research on it. But condoms are known for being the main prevention against STDs.

If you don't know this, then I suggest getting yourself educated about some of this stuff.
