learmedia.com is a site that sells DVDR's up in Canada. You can go to them on line and buy a rare flick. I just purchased Confessions of a Serial Killer and got burned big time. First off, the quality of the DVD stinks, it is one of those DVDR's in which the picture seems to pause every other second ever so slightly, it is really noticable during any movement of any kind.
Worse however is that the film is cut. Not even one of the grizzly murders are shown in thier version. Before I ordered my copy I had wrote to them and asked about this and they assured me via email that thier copy was the complete movie. It is not, it is an edited for TV version of the film. The cost for this rare film with shipping was close to $35. So this is a warning to all you film fans out there to stay clear of Lear Media.
Straw Dogs is a very upsetting unsetteling film in its own right, but I would put it in a different list other then a Sick list. I would put it in a Hate list, Salo which deserves to be in the Sick list I would also put in the Hate list as well. The thing about Straw Dogs is that the Hero of the story David Sumner, played by Dustin Hoffman, is actually the Heavy of the story, he is the bad guy. You are forced to place your hopes on the one character in the film that holds the most pent up rage inside them. The film also focuses extensively on the aftermath of the violence and not just the violence itself. The scene in which Susan George's character is in total anguish inside the church during the town festival facing her rapist who are now mocking her in the background is brutal because it is about her inner pain. I personally feel that Straw Dogs it the absolute greatest film ever made on violence, even more so then A Clockwork Orange. The viewer is not removed by futuristic genre like in A Clockwork Orange, and also, it has violence on every possible level. Emotional realationship violence between Hoffman and his wife, mocking territorial posturing between Hoffman and the village bruits that are working on his farm. Violence against property, animals since they killed the cat, sexual violence, and violence against people. It is also no small thing that the film is as mean to the audience as it is to the characters in the film.
The four movement symphony of hate films would thus be A Clockwork Orange, Straw Dogs, Salo, and finally the 1993 Mike Leigh film Naked staring David Thewlis, who should of won the oscar for best performance of the entire 1990's.
On a side note, only get the Criterion collection edition of Straw Dogs which has the single greatest commentary track in the histrory of DVD's. It is by film scholar Stephen Prince of Virginia Tech. And plays like a master class on film violence.
Just saw Men Behind The Sun last night. It deserves its place on the Sick list.
There is a disection sequence that was just horrific to watch...It looked very real, and in the context of the story was very depressing. In fact, Men Behind the Sun is extremely depressing which makes the cruel sick brutal depictions of gore in it that much more effective. It lacks the artistic flair of Salo, yet that did not hinder its effectiveness, it heightened it. There are many ungly moments in this film outside of the disection sequence, but that took the cake.
Cool. I'm glad that my picture is now seen by you. I thought it was weird because every time I go to this board the picture is up. You can also type in Naked Blood on Google and then click on pictures it will bring up all kinds of tasty stuff..."Forgive the pun."
The scene in which the lady eats her eye, nipple, and part of her vigina is shot in a white kitchen with white cabinets. It's nearly pornographic because there really isn't anything to look at except for that atrosity taking place before your eyes. I showed this to a friend of minemany years ago when he wanted to see my bloodiest movie, and he had me stop the film during this moment, the image of the lady munching her own eye haunted him ever since....Unlike something like Brain Dead which is tongue and cheek, Naked Blood takes itself very seriously and has a brooding quality that makes this moment feel even worse when it traspires. When I first seen the film it was hard to come by, now it is readily availble and can be bought on Amazon for around $10 or $11.
Has anyone besides me seen Naked Blood?
Here is a picture from the movie. As this woman eats her own eye, she munches it in total ecstacy as blood gushes down her face from her empty eye socket. It is shot in a completely white kitchen leaving you with nothing else to look at...It is some really rough stuff.
Just reporting back on Salo, by Paolo Pasolini. In a single word..."WOW!" This is an incredible film. It is not only extremely sick, but it is a masterwork of hate that ranks up there with Straw Dogs by Sam Pekinpah, A Clockwork Orange by Stanly Kubrick, and Naked by Mike Leigh. They are not all the same of course, Mike Leigh's Naked bleeds with humanity, Salo goes the oppisite directions and depicts how power currupts everthing and turns humans into things that are completely replacable and are therefor meant to be used up. Unlike. This is not just people running amuck with no rhyme or reason, but is instead instilled with a philosphy. Though it is set during the facist occupation of Italy during WWII, it is not historically accurate which leads me to believe that Pasolini must of really been attacking the same demons that Paddy Chayefsky attacked in the 1976 masterpiece Network, and that is capitolism.
On a side note, If anyone here does plan on buying Straw Dogs, get the Criterion Collection version, which has by far the best commentary track ever. It is by a film scholar Stepphen Prince and is like sitting in on a mater class on film violence.
Naked, by Mike Leigh is also available on Criterion, and has what I feel is the acting performance of the 1990's. David Thewlis who plays Johnny, puts on a performance that is like an explosion on screen.
Anyway, Salo is well worth the investment...I can not in good conscience say the say about August Mortem's Underground which is no more then a curiosity.
Outside of this, I must stress that real sickness can be found in Naked Blood.
That about sums up my points.
Lates.
I watched August Undergroud's Mortum, I was not really all that impressed by it. It is shot on camcorder. The camera work is extreamly shakey, the dead baby magot scene did not freak me out, if anything it was rather boring because it wasn't so much a movie as it was a home movie. The people were not believable in the least bit, all they did was run around and yell and act nuts. I really do not think it is worthy of the top honor in this list.
Again, the most sickening thing I ever seen is still Naked Blood which is not even on this list.
I also bough Salo which I will watch later and then report back on this forum.
Out.
I meant, " she was eating her own eye and growning with satisfaction, not 'growing' ". Opps!
A movie that should be on the top ten list is Naked Blood by Hisayasu Sato.
The depictions of the lady slicing off parts of herself and eating it is extremely sick, especially when she takes her own eye out and munches it lovingly while growing with satisfaction as blood gushes out of her empty eye socket. This actually bothered me much worse then some of the movies I have seen on that list. A big part of it is the tone to the picture...Sort of like th ending of Audition ( The self eating scene in Naked Blood is a far more disturbing experience however ).
