Yeah, I'd prefer to listen to a Muse live show than their studio recordings purely because of the kind of energy behind it. Dragonforce, like said many times in this thread before, can't do shit live. When you listen to a studio recording, you'd expect the performer to at least get close to the recording if it's their own song.

Hey, don't bash all rap, it can be really excellent music, like Just Jack here:

Then again I'm one of those guys that likes reggae, jazz, prog, experimental, country, and funk as well..

A genre for music with vocals? I don't think so, because really, vocals fit into every genre, except "instrumental". lol. And a seperate genre with vocals in music would be very generalized. Maybe a checkbox or a dropdown box to select if the song is an instrumental song, or a song with vocals?

Also, I think people don't sing that much because:

1) They don't have the means to record.
2) Their relative pitch is not yet developed enough for vocals.
3) They are too shy to sing in fear of embarassment or low scores due to bad singing.
4) They know when they shouldn't do things they can't.

I mean, I'm sure everyone has a voice if they put a bunch of effort in, but many people on this site are probably not cut out for working at it, in my opinion.

Topic: 10 Favorite Guitarists?

Posted: 08/16/08 05:28 PM

Forum: General

A favorites list from a fellow shredder:

1. John Petrucci (Ridiculous shredder, and still uses emotional values in his music. Some disagree..)
2. Buckethead (Writes VERY moving music other than just shred, i.e. Electric Tears, Too Many Humans)
3. Joe Satriani (Self-explanatory. He puts himself into his guitar entirely, and is still technical.)
4. Steve Vai (Again, this one speaks for himself. Steve fucking Vai.)
5. Jimmy Page (Inspirational songwriter and awesome guitarist.)
6. David Gilmour (Not necessarily fast, but has very powerful and memorable solos.)
7. Steven Wilson (Probably the best songwriter on this list, whether you've heard him or not.)
8. Dimebag (Another self-explanatory shredder.)
9. Eric Johnson (Amazing string skipping techniques and really solid songwriting.)
10. Tommy Emmanuel (Sweet acoustic guitarist guy, knows his stuff.)

And then you have my 4 person shitlist:

1. Herman Li (Fucks up every second-third note live, sometimes isn't in tune, edits shit in-studio.)
2. Kurt Cobain (Bad singer, bad guitarist, really basic songwriting. I don't like him.)
3. Slash (Over-marketing himself after guitar hero. Just sloppily fucks around in minor pentatonic.)
4. Sam Totman (Just a drunk with a major scale and piss-poor accuracy.)

Yeah, no Hendrix. He's okay. Alright guitarist and a pretty good songwriter, I guess he'd be at 11 or something.

Topic: How do you name your songs.

Posted: 08/15/08 02:24 AM

Forum: Audio

What did you feel when writing the song? For instance I named a slow tempo, almost sinister sounding piece 'Manipulated and Mutilated', kinda feeling a since of betrayal or mental torture after I immerse myself in the song.

For a bit of a happier tone, I named a song Breathe Easy, because it has a very simplistic feel to the acoustic guitar, and casual lead bits everywhere, and some very simple vocal harmonies without any lyrics or anything. Kinda made me wanna walk outside and get a breath of fresh air, and take a jog or a bike ride of sorts. Just try and feel something when listening to the finished piece and what not, and see what you can feel, and name it after that!

Or you could take a totally bizarre turn for it like Buckethead and make the song name like "Cubed Ground Beef". That's always fun.

Topic: Slash or Buckethead?

Posted: 08/15/08 01:41 AM

Forum: Audio

Slash fucks around in minor pentatonic to depict "EMOTION" while Buckethead writes amazing warm, acoustic/electric masterpieces such as the album Electric Tears, or odd metal that sounds incredibly bizzare like the Island of Lost Minds, or stuff that has a strong melody and powerful solos like Nottingham Lace. Both technically and emotionally, Buckethead wins.

Sorry, ramblin' my opinions again about guitarists :P

So yeah, bad thread, etc etc.

If you want an incredible bass, I recommend looking around at the Schecter Stiletto series instead. But if you're really going for either Dean or a BC Rich, and the budget is low, I would go for the Dean.

(Also make sure you aren't buying things for their body shape..)

Topic: Sweep picking!!!

Posted: 08/08/08 02:21 PM

Forum: Audio

Happened to me too, actually. It was around 5-6 months ago, I was so determined to get it down this one night, and I looked at every tutorial I could find. I couldn't do it. Then I wake up, and later that afternoon, I could somehow pull off a simple C minor shape. Then an A minor shape. Then I started experimenting with like E 7 shapes and incorporating shredding and hammer-ons/pull-offs with the sweeping and all that junk.

But really, once you get it down, it's not that hard at all. In time, it just sounds impressive, when really, it's not all that hard, like two-handed tapping on a single string. So yeah, use it sparingly. Solos start to sound really bland when you have them sectioned off, such as having a "sweeping part" or "two-handed tapping part". during a 30-second solo. Instead, incorporate many techniques and different scales and unique chord shapes, like Sir John Petrucci demonstrates in the Under a Glass Moon solo:

Hey guys, I'm a black kid, and racism is a laughing matter to me, and I wonder why it isn't to the general population yet. All black people of the current generation getting offended by racism haven't experienced slavery, and should laugh over any petty racist comment. And the white people getting offended by racism against blacks? *facepalm*

Looking at it realistically, many blacks have piss poor word structure and ridiculous dialect, and are in-general, stupid. But there are occasions when there is a literate, reasonable, black person. Generalizing is dumb, but first impressions make much more sense, the way I look at it. We're only human, stereotypical thoughts will always run through our heads.

Hey guys, he's black so he must have a stronger say in the matter, right?

Lashmush is the only one that uses ALL sampled instruments.
Metaljonus, GoreBastard, BMI, Jnry3, Sasha, and I think Kor-Rune have songs with vocals.
The rest just do amazing instrumentals.

So far ive really only come across two brands, i was hoping there would be more.

Theres the Sustainiac Stealth Pro (or Stealth Plus when its distrubuted by Fender)
And the Fernandes Kits, does anyone know of any other brands? Its really expensive to ship them down here to Australia.

Ive also considered the Ebow, which is a little easier to get down here, but im not sure if its what i want.

In the end the main thing i want to be able to to do is ambient noise and the harmonics thing. Sorta like what Bellamy is doing in Starlight (live from abbey road):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-Poy8uNR1Q

For what Matt's doing, I'd use my volume knob to volume swell, and and then turn on some slow, loud, but soft delay and use vibrato for that kinda sustain Matt has in Starlight there, and maybe a whammy pedal set at one octave up for some sort of harmonic pitch. Even then, it probably wouldn't sound as close. Then again, Bellamy has so many effects, and a freakin Kaoss Pad on his guitar. his possibilities are endless.

Try learning a Dream Theater song from the Images and Words album. They weren't TOO technical in this era, and it would probably help gain a sense of accuracy and a bit of familiarization with a few different time signatures.

Also, bass is way harder than guitar. Every note can easily come out uneven and very random volume-wise unless you know what you're doing with pressure and angle of the picking. Accurate fretwork is also must. I were to shred up and down the dorian scale with a pick on my guitar, and the bassist did the same on his bass down a mere four strings(six if he's myung or claypool) with his fingers, I would applaud him and consider him a technically more skilled musician.

I say get an Ibanez RG2EX1 as a starter guitar if you really plan on starting to play. The neck feels amazing, like all or nearly all Ibanez necks, which definitely inspires easier movement and better comfort around the guitar, and therefore would most likely inspire more dedication to the instrument IMO.

Generally I can listen to anything, minus MAINSTREAM rap, and screamo. Shit's terrible. Underground rap/hip-hop however, can be pretty good stuff. Country/Southern is good if you look in the right places (Outlaws, Charlie Daniels Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd etc.)

I enjoy some alternative, reggae, folk, death metal, pop, jazz fusion, experimental rock, techno, classical, prog, hair metal, and the list goes on.

Mostly I'll listen by band rather by genre though. For example, you've got shitty power metal like Dragonforce, and then you've got great power metal like Sonata Arctica or Stratovarius. Same formula, pulled off by different bands, with each adding in their unique flair.

Perfect pitch helps a bunch, I have it, and it makes learning other songs and figuring out scales and chords real easy. I could listen to it on my mp3 player and then play it when I got home later, as long as it's not a freakin Dream Theater solo, lol. Then I'm forced to use tabs for the most part.

I tend to put my beliefs into decades of scientific research and observation of nature's habit of adaption and progression, rather than an ancient tome with magical, invisible, universe spawning, jewish zombies, and talking serpents written centuries ago to keep people in line.

With that said, it doesn't matter to me. I like to just live my life, hang out with friends, play gigs with my band, and order a pizza every other week for the family.

I like to believe I enjoy life just as much as scientists who make these stunning discoveries are always wanting to know more, and find excitement or thrill in studies. Maybe the rush of knowing something before everyone else, or, if proven wrong, learning something new? I don't know. It's not worth the argument, but I do know I've certainly lived a better life so far without the fear of a hell or a constant moral conscious to satisfy a god of some sort.

Topic: Real VS Fake

Posted: 07/15/08 08:19 AM

Anyway, I suppose I should have extended slightly upon what I was saying. In my experience, when the whole "soul" issue is brought up, it's usually by someone who is unhappy with the fact that a computer can play music much better than them. Hence soul = human error. Is this a bad thing? Not neccesarily, I never said it was ;).

But when you listen to their music to find fret noise and bum notes all over the show, I think it's generally just a case of extreme sour grapes :). We shouldn't be angry at technology for being note perfect ;)

Ah, okay. I personally think the risk of the said flaws and human imperfections in a live show give more of a rush, rather than turning on a speaker and knowing every note is perfectly processed and sequenced. The physical performance itself requires dexterity, and the listeners love to be impressed with virtuosity.

It's merely perception though, I'm sure techno/trance or whatever musicians highly appreciate the effort going into building sounds from scratch and equalizing everything to their personal preference with the layers and layers of unique synth sounds and diverse drums and what not far more than two guitarists on stage harmonizing a shred solo. So it's a matter of preference, and like said before, is a pointless thread. :D
