Response to: Faster shading Posted January 26th, 2012 in Animation

I recommend picking the colors yourself. putting 50% black over stuff may be more time-efficient but usually looks not very pleasant.
The most time-saving shading I've done is the following way: Draw the outlines, fill it with colors, copy the outlines, smear your self-picked shadow colors onto it not giving a fuck about outlines, paste the outlines in and put them above the mess. Next frame.

Baldurs Gate II.

Response to: What makes an MMO good? Posted January 24th, 2012 in Video Games

1. A good class system. Take Dungeons & Dragons Online (Freely mix classes for unique characters) or Dream of Mirror Onine (Take 1 main job and 2 skill trees from other jobs) as an example.

2. A PvE environment that adapts to the player, providing him/them with multiple ways to solve things/missions, not just "slay these fuckers to progress, oh and there's a boss".

With that being said, I have tested and played so many mmorpgs that I can truly say: There is no mmorpg that does these things 100% right. D&D Online was damn close though, the only problem was the lack of content since they went for quality over quantity.

Response to: I Found Zelda: Oot Boring Posted January 24th, 2012 in Video Games

You really should play it longer to get a qualified opinion about OoT.
I agree with you however that OoT isn't as awesome as it appeared to be back then, due to nostalgia-bonus and different quality standards. You can apply that to any other old game, like FF7 etc.

What defines a roleplaying game then? The combat system? A stat system? These are part of the gameplay, not the genre. The term RPG is misused alot nowadays. Roleplay is defined by choices - not necessarily ones that affect the ending of the game, but the way you walk your path towards it.
Baldurs Gate is the perfect example. The general ending is always the same, but you can be a murdering asshole or a goodie two shoes along the way, or anything inbetween.

At 1/22/12 12:13 PM, RazorHawk wrote: In Final Fantasy games, the storyline is very linear and ends up being the same despite the dialogue options you pick or what sub-quests you do along the way. The ending usually ends up being exactly the same either way.

That's why Final Fantasy is (in my opinion) a strategic combat adventure, not an RPG. You don't do anything remotely resembling roleplaying.

At 1/22/12 12:13 PM, RazorHawk wrote: Also, there's plenty of non-RPG games that involve making choices that actually affect the storyline and ending.

In these instances you are roleplaying because it makes you think about what you want the main character to do etc.

At 1/22/12 10:45 AM, RazorHawk wrote: When you get down to it, role-playing just means taking on the likeness of a character and taking command of a character that's someone besides yourself, which could apply to any game. In a first person shooter, you're role-playing as a soldier. In a sports game, you're role-playing as an athlete. It's a pretty loose term.

But roleplaying also involves you making choices (outside of distributing stats and equipment), and that is not given in linear shooters, sports games etc. Controlling an avatar does not equal roleplaying as him/her as long as you don't make choices for him.

Roleplaying is not defined by the gameplay or genre.

I'd rather have a girl who plays games with me rather than one nagging: "Omg u play de games all the time?!" You can still have other interests you don't share so I don't get why people act as if a nerd girls only interest is videogames.

Of course I mean real nerds, not pretentious hipster fucks.
Response to: Games turning into MMO's Posted January 22nd, 2012 in Video Games

MMORPGs are the bane of any franchise. I'm glad Fallout Online was cancelled.

Response to: What happened to the old Rpgs Posted January 22nd, 2012 in Video Games

I grew up with most of the games you listed there and I still think Baldurs Gate II is the best rpg ever made, but in my opinion sandbox games are much closer to being true rpgs since they usually involve choice and consequences based on your actions.
Most so-called "rpgs" today are either too linear and/or have predefined characters (I'm looking at you Square Enix) giving you no choice at all. Then there are games like The Elder Scrolls where you can make choices, but the devs forgot to add consequences.
So in conclusion, the franchise that comes closest to fullfilling all the things an rpg should have is the Fallout series. Write your own story.

Response to: Owning a sword. Posted January 21st, 2012 in General

You can hardly call most X00 dollar swords weapons so it is legal. They are no more dangerous than a big kitchen knife. I know since I have both a cheap and an expensive Katana, the former would probably break if I hit someone with it. So basically if you stay under a certain value you're just buying house decoration.
