All music is "recorded" if you have a midi controller! Those things are a world of convenience, and so much fun, as opposed to mapping all the notes. You can even improvise melodies and other neat stuff while listening to what you have so far.

Response to: Reason 4! Posted September 28th, 2007 in Audio

Random notes, some to comments and questions above, some not:

- Reason 3 ran on vista.
- Yes, Reason 4 has tempo and time signature automation.
- Reason 4's new sequencer isn't a hard transition if you just watch a tutorial vid, you'll understand it quickly and it'll probably grow on you, so give it more than a first glance and a frown if it looks "complex" or "different."
- Reason 4, although doesn't have TRUE multi-core support, does spread the graphics and audio processing to different cores if you have a multi-core.
- Thor's delay, chorus, and filters are actually better than the separate delay, chorus and filter devices... which is just plain stupid, since it's a hassle to wire external audio devices through Thor to take advantage of it's FX components... and then Thor just makes the separate delay, chorus and filter devices obsolete. Version 4.5 needs reworked/updated FX devices more than anything... true multi-core support is a damn close 2nd though.
- I haven't had a good look at the okestor sound bank for Reason 4 since I've only gotten the demo so far, but my guess is that it still probably sucks without lots of knowledgeable processing and sequencing.
- Uhh, yea, that's about it.

sunset area remix: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01269/

You can go on OCR's forums and request someone do the battle theme or aqua lake, and if someone is interested, they may do it for ya, and it's promised to be badass. Not like the lame losers here at newgrounds, who are greedy and lazy, and don't even know how to mix properly, and can't even follow song structure... yet despite all this, they still expect some kind of reward for their "efforts" rather than any kind of good work.

VGMix may also have something, but they are undergoing some renovations so you can't see their database, I think.

Go to OverClocked ReMix or VGMix if you want your mind blown by *spectacular* video game remixes. I believe they have Devil May Cry stuff there.

Response to: reason 3.0 mp3 export? Posted September 10th, 2007 in Audio

AUDACITY -> EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> MP3 EXPORT SETUP -> BIT RATE: [128, 160, 192, etc.] -> OKAY!

But you first need to download LAME.dll (google it, it's friggin everywhere) and "Find Library" (in MP3 EXPORT SETUP box) before you can export as .mp3 in Audacity. Also, Reason 3 has a little -0.3db buffer on it's compressor to prevent digital clipping and whatnot, cause compressors aren't perfect. You can use the amplify function (under EFFECT, when you have your import track selected) in Audacity to "correct" this. So Audacity is useful in more ways than one, and the whole process isn't as inconvenient as you'd think.

Response to: Similar to FL Studio (for mac) Posted September 9th, 2007 in Audio

Reason is a lot more intuitive and easy to use than FL. For starters, there are no drop down menus, digital screens, tabs or other crap you have to go through. You always see everything that is available to you right in front of your face. Plus, the sequencer is also a lot more tidy and plugging stuff in the back of the rack is fun. Just think about it some more rather than rejecting it outright, bro.

At 9/7/07 01:13 PM, LJCoffee wrote: I had other apps open but when I took the shot I was actively running Reason... It appeared that the cpu load was being split across the four cores.

Yea, probably cause all the other apps' loads were being shared evenly, hence running the cpu heavy song on Reason, to clearly be able to tell if any particular cpu was being hit with the whole load instead of it being evenly distributed. I suppose the best test would be to run the computer on safe mode so it's running only the bare minimum amount of sys processes to keep itself running, and then open up a monster RNS file and play it while examining how your multicore takes it. But that's unnecessary now, from my experiments with R3 and the gentleman's post in another forum about R4 I believe R4 will be lacking multicore support.

I don't suppose the QX6700 and the mobo here are splitting it all up... (hardware drivers handling load splitting instead of software?) It's possible... but unlikely...

I figure it's simple, the application just needs to know how to send some data to one cpu and then some other data to another cpu to have it's load be shared evenly. Problem is that Reason likes to play favorites <_<

It always seemed to run fine and even if things get out of hand, you can always bounce tracks or do a little resampling to get around cpu issues...

Eh, it's an inconvenience I'm not too fond of... I constantly do a lot of editing and having to resample constantly really would be a pain... I figure it'd be a lot nicer if Propellerhead wasn't cheap and just gave R4 the multicore support, I think it may be the only big name digital home studio that doesn't have it.

Oh well, multi-core support is always a nice thing, even if it's not a necessary thing...

Haha, well when you have a dual core at 1.6ghz each, and even some of R3 demo songs get the cpu meter up half way, multicore support starts to sound reeaaallly nice. So nice that I decided to go over to propellerhead's site and post a thread on their feature suggestion forum, though I doubt they ever look at it considering all the idiots constantly whining about implementing audio tracks and vst support -_- I'll see how that goes, and perhaps I'll look around to see if they have another method of registering complaints/suggestions or whatever.

I was looking around for answers and some guy on a forum said, "Reason 4 will have no multicore support. The one maker of the program said this before beta testing started so best of luck to everyone running on more than 1 core processor. I hope they eventually come around and give support for it."

If that's true then it's very unfortunate. That's saying my old 2.1ghz desktop (that was already thrown out) could run Reason better than my new 3.4ghz laptop, just because my laptop is a dual core and my desktop was a single. I know propellerhead shoots for cpu efficiency, and Reason by far eats up less cpu than any other digital home studio, but not offering multicore support is just half-assing it, don't ya think?

"Our Reason system is very cpu efficient and takes less cpu than any other audio software!"
"But does it offer multicore support?"
"Uh... no."
"So then even if FL uses 150% more cpu than Reason, wouldn't I be able to run it smoother because it distributes the load evenly across my dual core, therefore using 75% of each cpu instead of 100% of one, completely ignoring the other, like Reason does?"
"Uhhh, uhhh... [propellerhead's representative's head explodes]"

I really hope they do come to their senses and offer some multicore support for Reason 4. As for now I could only think of configuring my computer somehow (if possible) so that I'll let one cpu handle all the system and user processes and just have one dedicated Reason cpu :D

I don't know about your setup man but I've got a quad core here and Reason 3.0 uses all 4 cores on mine.

I sure hope it's just my setup, then it may actually be fixed. Anyhow, in your screen shot it's even hard to tell if you're running Reason, all the little synchronized jumps and drops in all the cpus could be from running normal background system processes. That's why I suggested running a really-cpu-heavy song to check so then you could much more clearly tell by the grid charts. If you were running something more lightweight then I could raise question to grid number two, and be like "hey, why the hell is that one taking 5-10% more than the others?" But that's something that probably occurs more or less normally... and I'm not exactly a cpu-read-a-grid-guru.

When I run a big song on Reason 3 this is what it looks like. Each cpu is using about 10% in keeping system and user processes afloat, but only the cpu on the left handles the extra load of Reason, and that's why it's at 60% while the other's still chilling at 5-10%.

Reason 4!

Response to: Reason 4! Posted September 6th, 2007 in Audio

wooo... reason 4... I heard they weren't planning on doing an VST support stuff because of stability issues. Aside from that, for all the guys picked to be beta testers, I gotta ask, does reason 4 support dual core processors? to check just play some cpu heavy song file and open up task manager (press ctrl+alt+del) and look under the performance tab. If you have a dual core you should see two grids with a green line marking the cpu usage of each cpu. Reason 3 doesn't take advantage of dual cores and you can clearly see this when Reason uses 90% of one cpu and 0% of the other <.<

Me thinks that stolen audio is much more common and can cause a lot more trouble than stolen flash (newgrounds going head-to-head with big bad record labels in lawsuits regarding copyright infringement). We should have a whistle for the audio portal, even if the artist's first song is legit.
