3.93 / 5.00 4,634 ViewsI was looking around at some of the clubs in the forums and this sounded like the only one worth taking a look at. It's cool to see other fans on here. I just had to say one thing. I noticed a couple different people talking about post-rock and shoegaze as different genres or something. That's just not true. Post-rock is just a very broad category of music that focuses largely on atmosphere and experimentation, but there's been a bunch of movements within post-rock, including dream pop and shoegaze. In any case, I'm surprised no one brought up another very related, though somewhat smaller movement within post-rock, slowcore. Bands like Low in the 90s, who wanted to make much slower, quieter and more atmospheric rock, in direct opposition to the grunge movement, with its speed and aggression and loudness. One of the few rock movements where distortion wasn't really used. Lots of reverb, though, and usually really depressing/melancholy sound and sometimes lyrics. It's good stuff. If so inclined, one could actually draw a lot of parallels between slowcore and funeral doom, despite some of their obvious differences. Slowcore bands are still around, but it's a pretty deeply underground movement, although you can still find bigger popular music critics talking about it here and there. Some bands, like Low, are pretty big, too, I guess, or at least kinda well known. Like funeral doom, lot of people just find it boring, I guess. Their loss. Anyways, I'm a fan of post-rock, incl. shoegaze and dream pop and much more, as well as liking a lot of music outside post-rock, too.
Here's an older Low music video:

Here's a music video from their new album, which is a decidedly much happier song:

My bad about posting this in the wrong place.
Yeah, I am only clicking on it once. My connection is not slow (everything else works completely smoothly and fast). And, yes, I have allowed time to pass. I tried a couple times clicking on it and just leaving it there for a while and did other stuff and came back to it. Still nothing.
I tried clicking on E. No change. I don't get it. I'm using internet explorer 9. I haven't tried another browser. I guess I could do that, but everything else is working just fine. It's weird that it was working up until a couple of weeks ago, too.
I first want to sincerely apologize if this is the wrong place to be posting this. I'd rather not post this here seeing as how it's related to the art portal on ng, but not really art in any way. I couldn't find a forum on ng that just related to troubleshooting or anything, though.
Anyways, my problem is that for some reason (only within the last week or two) I can't seem to click on the art ratings (E, T, M, A). I go to the art portal and try to sort art using those and for some reason when i click on any of the letters, nothing happens. When my curosr hovers over the letter icons, the icon DOES change to have the x over it or brighten, but nothing happens when I click.
A small problem, I realize, but I tried looking around and couldn't find a solution anywhere. So, hoping someone here might have a solution. Thanks.
I wasn't able to make it, but I definitely want in on this series.
I just had a quick question. The rules say ONE instrument. I debated a while with myself on what I should do and I decided on guitar. My question, though, is what if the guitar goes from acoustic to electric. I was going to make my intro start out with some little acoustic piece then switch over to sudden and devastating distortion. I was going to take a page from some funeral doom metal and black metal, and maybe even crust punk. Anyways, is that a cool thing to do? Technically it's still guitar.
Change of plans. I might be able to do something tomorrow. Maybe.
Thanks for inviting me Rig. I might not be able to make it this time, but hopefully you'll make more of these. Unfortunately, I'm leaving tomorrow to take care of some things and I won't be back until late Monday.
I'd like to join this competition but I'm not quite sure if it'd work out.
I have quite an eclectic taste and listen to way more different types of music than about 99% of people. You can see the list of genres I like in my favorites in my favorite music section.
http://kirbiboh.newgrounds.com/favorites /
From underground hip hop to folk metal to electronica to industrial to indie to hardcore punk to classical, etc.
I play multiple instruments (not fantastically, I assure you) along with doing vocals and would love to do something that Newgrounds doesn't see much of. At the moment I'd probably like to do some crust punk or some raw black metal or maybe even some doom metal or sludge or shoegaze.
However, I don't have any recording equipment. I have a mic for my computer that would no doubt make everything sound like absolute shit.
I do have FL studio, though I'm only slightly versed in its uses. With that program I could make some ambient music, electronica, trance and/or some trip hop. That would be fun as well and I like those genres, too.
HOWEVER! Another problem. My mouse port in the back of my tower just recently broke. I need to get a USB mouse. At the moment I get along fine w/ my pc just because I know a lot of shortcuts on the keyboard. But I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work out with FL studio to make a whole song.
A dilemma to be sure. BUT, I might be getting a new usb mouse soon. Possibly. I'm kinda low on cash at the moment and I have a lot going on. I also have a friend who might have a usb converter for a mouse.
So I don't know if I should enter. I would hate to enter and have to pull out later because something didn't work out and somehow fuck something up with the competition, like hurt my opponent's chances. So my question is, what are the chances of that happening? If I pull out later will that still be alright? Will my opponent get a new partner?
As another thought there's an idea I actually got a while ago about doing a competition or group similar to this. Except it would be specifically dealing w/ more underground styles. I'm a huge music lover. There's a lot of music on Newgrounds, but most of it stays within a lot of specific more general styles. I'd like to encourage more variety in NG's audio portal. I'd love to start a competition or group with a few others dealing with styles you don't see much on NG right now. Like crust or grindcore or neofolk or psychedelic rock or black metal or post rock, etc. Mostly experimental music. Post-industrial or post-punk or w/e. Material you'd hear from, like, Foetus or something.
I could even judge a competition like that. I've got the credentials. I'm not only a lover of many styles of music. I'm a student of anthropology and musicology. I know my music theory. I know my music history. I know about music from all over the world and from different time periods. It doesn't matter if it's psychedelia or indie or alternative or classical. I know it. If I don't I'll research it. I am, after all, constantly learning (and listening to) new things. I love to write reviews, too, and critique things. I've written a few here on NG. I love talking about and discussing music, too, if that isn't obvious by now.
You can see one of my music reviews here, if you care:

Anyways, it's a thought. Don't know how many people would be wanting to do something like the competition or group I mentioned. After all it serves a specific audience. Don't know how many people I'd find wanting to join something like that. If anyone at all finds what I said interesting be sure to get back to me on it. I'd appreciate it immensely.
It also depends on what kind of music you're thinking about playing. As in what sub of metal you're talking about. I mean, lets' get specific. Do you want to play thrash, black, power, doom, death, or what? Naming off some artists/guitarists that you like might help.
We gotta know. Are we talking about some flower metal here? Or some straight up holocaust bestial noise satanic fuckfest? Or, y'know, somewhere in between.
Thanks for that as well. That's pretty lame about the genre list. It really should be expanded. I mean if it's going to be that general they should at least try for some sub-genres when you click on a genre such as punk or metal or hip hop or w/e. Those terms are just way too general and many, many styles have popped up within each of those descriptions. Not to mention the search options for the audio portal are really poorly done. It's basically impossible to find anything unless you randomly stumble upon it or it's from a user that you liked before (by randomly stumbling upon). I realize the audio portal is only one facet here on newgrounds and is probably not a main focus among the games and flash movies, but it could still do well with just some small bits of improvement. Same thing with the art section, too. NG should really use more tags in every section (games, movies, art, audio, etc.) to make things more easily searchable.
Ah, well thanks for the advice. I suspected that might be the case. That kinda blows but oh well.
I'm a person who loves music and many different genres (you can see some of the kinds I like on my page). I'm especially interested in underground styles of music. I just started getting into the audio portal here on NG. I've seen some underground stuff, like a very tiny bit of black metal. But are there really any underground styles here? Am I wasting my time? The categories on NG are so overly general. No subgenres really. I looked in the punk section, too, and that made me think. Is there any crust punk at all here on NG? I heard none. Hardcore punk, post-hardcore and pop punk is mostly what I heard.
