Have you asked him why? Because that might help a bit. If you're so struck by his words, I suggest talking things over after class/school with him. We don't know why someone does something, unless one of us should be that person.

So people may learn. You've gone and saw what topics are locked. Now you've got to ask yourself what the common denominator between these topics is. And subsequently not make a topic with said common denominator.

Chernobyl is considered safe. Just to be sure, they don't allow the public back in yet.

Another thing is, with Chernobyl, they kept it silent. I live in the vicinity of a nuclear plant (about 10 miles) and there are instructions on what to do should it have a meltdown. One of the most important things is to take the iodine pills the government has handed out. This is to prevent our thyroid from absorbing the radioactive iodine. If you're still unsure about it all, you can go and visit the plant. At least here in Belgium, I don't know how it's done in other countries.

Nuclear power is one of the greatest developments of the 20th century, why are we not utilizing it?

I know I do! And most of Belgium, I think. About 2/3 of the generated power in Belgium is from nuclear plants.

Let's not forget the possibility that the waste explodes while it's still being propelled into the air. It would be spread directly in the higher regions of the atmosphere, resulting in a world-wide crisis.

I do believe you're talking about nuclear waste?
It's been thought of.

At 7/6/09 09:18 AM, AnalogStick wrote: Cleanest? Are you facktarded? No poison can come out of it!? Waste not a big concern?!

If it's dealt with correctly and accordingly, nuclear waste holds little to no threat. I have been to a nuclear waste disposal factory/thingamajig, and they really take care not to have any leaks; The waste is encased in a barrel filled to the brim with concrete, and then those barrels are placed in a subterranean storage room with enormous amounts of concrete. The barrels on their own are designed in such a manner that they cannot leak under normal conditions. Should a leak occur, there still is the concrete. It could even be that the entire room is lined with lead, and/or the barrels. I can't remember.
It's because we know how dangerous the stuff is, we are so careful with it. We know we can't dump the waste anywhere. We know it's devastating. That is why we store it deep underground, in concrete bunkers (that might be lined with lead, I don't know). To give you an idea: 9 cm of compacted soil is the equivalent of 6 cm of concrete or 1 cm of lead, when it comes to halving the amount of gamma radiation.

Most reliable!? SAFEST?!@!??!#%? ARE YOU FUCKING INSANE?! Also: It's called Chernobyl. P.S.S : The computers run on Windows ME.

Yes, it is safe. Again, we know how extremely dangerous it is what we're doing. Yes, Chernobyl happened. Yes, Three Mile Island happened. Yes, both were avoidable. But both happened. They were tragedies. But they have helped us learn about how we could even further add to the safety of other already existing, and future power plants. You say it's dangerous, but there has only been one single really grave incident. Chernobyl. That one accident has incurred 56 direct deaths, and an estimated 600 000 highly exposed people. They think it could cause about 4 000 deaths by cancer as a direct consequence of the exposure. Yes this is a lot, but this could have been prevented easily. A quick glance of the 'Contents'-table on the Wikipedia page on Chernobyl teaches us that the safety systems were disabled. (It says so literally: 2.3 Disabling of the safety systems). Nowadays, this would be very hard to do. Both because of the chain of command, and (I think, again: I'm no expert, this is how I would do it. And if an 18-year old can think of it, my guess is that they will have thought of it too) most likely multiple people need to give their authorization. And even then, only a part should be able to be deactivated at once.

Note: when I say 'we', I don't literally mean 'myself and some guys', but humanity. Just in case someone should wonder.

Chernobyl.

I'm all for Nuclear power; it is the cleanest, most efficient, most reliable, safest energy source there is. There is little to no risk of meltdown, or other accident (due to the advanced computers operating it), no poisoning coming from it, and the problem of the nuclear waste is no bigger concern then the waste from other sources.

What he said. It generates a lot of power on a relatively small surface and is open for everybody. Unlike wind, solar and water power. It's relatively clean, seeing you only have the waste, which is tightly packed in layers upon layers of concrete and lead. And as long as nuclear fusion isn't really profitable or feasible, this remains the best alternative.

Seriously? This is only true if both arms of the lever are of the same length. This is derived from the basic formula: Load arm X load force = effort arm X effort force. In this case, the load is 700 lbs (about 317,5 kg or 3175 N), seeing the total length of both arms is 4 feet (or about 120 cm) we have this formula:
3175*(120-x)=x*y
<=>(3175/x)*(120-x)=y
<=>3175((120/x)-1)=y

Here x is the length of the effort arm in cm. If you fill in various lengths, you get various results. Let's say we make it 100 cm, as I suggested in my first post:
3175*((120/100)-1=y
<=>3175(1.2-1)=y
<=>3175/5=y
<=>635=y

Now, this still is in newton. To put it in kg, I just need to divide by ten and look at that! It's 63,5 kg. Now, for you Americans/Brits:others who use the Imperial System: this is about 140 lbs. Seeing the average person weighs about 150 lbs, this should clearly do the trick. If, however, you make both arms of equal length, you'll get this:
3175*((120/60)-1)=y
<=> 3175*(2-1)=y
<=>3175=y

And believe me, I do not weigh 700 lbs.

So yes, I do have the brains. Did you really think I would make such a claim without research?

Response to: You are standing in front of a ditc Posted June 25th, 2009 in General

I would call a friend for help. I would dig out some earth around the block so it's more or less even, On the other side I would have a slope where the wheelbarrow could easily ride up and down. Then I'd put the sledgehammer somewhere near the block, put the breaking bar under the block and us it for leverage. If one arm is about 21 cm, I would have to exert a force of about 67 kilos to get it moving. Since I weigh more than 67 kilo, I just need to go and sit on it, shouldn't I be able to move it by force. In the meantime, my friend's making sure the block's not going anywhere funny, and heaving it in the wheelbarrow.

Brains > brawn.
