The only reason why it ends up being so much money is because we make a shit ton more cash.
Fact remains that we spend more than most of the world, percentages aren't as much of a factor as actual numbers.

Barack Obama admitting that he's going to cut funding for our military. Surprise Surprise.
You have to remember that our military spending is almost half of all the military spending on the planet and more than then next ten highest spenders combined. Cutting back on our spending in a reasonable fashion isn't going to leave us militarily vulnerable.
The fucking moron wants to cut both Missile Defense (which he says is "unproven", yet it works) and Future Combat Systems, which is basically the only program right now to keep our forces ahead of our enemies in technology. That's basically saying "I want the US to fall behind our enemies, and I want out military to become so weak in the near future that we won't be to do anything but police our own territory".
Missile defense is unproven. Every test ever performed on the idea shows that it takes too long for the defense system to lock onto incoming missiles, Regan's Star Wars program was a better idea.
Obama wants the US to be weaker in the world, while wanting the US government to have more power within the US. Fuck Obama and fuck his braindead supporters.
And calling me braindead is just offensive.
If anybody bothered to read the actual bill and not just that guy's article it says that "The Department of Homeland Security's efforts to prevent ideologically based violence and homegrown terrorism as described herein shall not violate the constitutional rights, civil rights, or civil liberties of United States citizens or lawful permanent residents." Now I'm as critical of the administration as anybody but there's a point where the finger pointing gets ridiculous and this is one of them. The primary function of this bill is to establish a commission to study the issue and Homeland Security would have to go off a lot more than just someone's blog to press any sort of charges. Is it too much to ask to read the thing before we react to it?
While it's difficult to tell how much reliance on technology is too much I think you have a good question. I think there is a very real danger of becoming too reliant on machines which could theoretically lead to us programming computers to run everything and then when they do break down we wouldn't know how to repair them. This is, of course, theoretical banter but I think there are some indications that it wouldn't hurt any to scale back our use of computers just a bit. The first is the fact that a lot of people in high school reach for the calculator for basic arithmetic. I will admit that while I was in high school I did the same thing but since I graduated I've been trying to stay away from using the calculator and try to do as much in my head as possible. Another thing that concerns me just a bit is that hand writing is being downplayed now in favor of teaching kids computer literacy. Obviously in this lightning age we're in one has to know how to type but practicing hand writing helps frontal lobe development at a young age, also why it pays to learn to use chopsticks, practicing fine motor skills stimulates the brain. While there is nothing that screams too much technology I think that we're at a point where we have to be careful so that we don't cross that line from technology being a tool to a necessity.
