Yeah, ConceptArt is filled with people who do this stuff for a living. But you're on your way.

Put it this way. The individual parts look great... but the overall picture gets confusing. May i suggest reading up on Composition? And... I always love linking back to this tutorial. Don't know why.

hah, of course, i gotta take my own advice one of these days....

Not really.
We pretty much just took pictures and reproduced them in different medias, just three times as big.
She made some effort with "okay stand on the table and we'll draw you", but that only happened once or twice.

Maybe that's just because i was in art1 (meant for sophomores) as a Senior, but i learned more from the internet and books.

Inking usually doesn't make up for bad anatomy unless you go down that "oh this is artsy ignore the scribbles" road.

As for the first picture, i think it's the head and the torso that's messing with it. Her neck is sitting on the far shoulder, as opposed to the center of the spine.
And... There's no ribcage. Torsos tend to curve a bit.

Topic: Drawing scenery in flash

Posted: 08/29/09 08:40 AM

Forum: Art

For beginner or quick scenes, i would suggest working modularly.
Make a couple of different trees, rocks, and clumps of grass. The easier you can tell them apart, the better. Save each as a Graphics symbol. (Or make each a new frame, if that makes sense)
Place them in various positions around your scene. Change the scale and rotation. Don't put two of the same right next to each other.

This way, you can focus on making each item look good, and your effort is multiplied.

Don't worry about reflections. Only shiny things have them, and unless you're trying to add a lake, you're fine. The trees need shadows... Think of them as 'fuzzy' spheres.

If you're really serious about getting it to look good, read up on composition.

There's a menu under File>publish settings. Use this for more options than 'export'. But if i read you correctly, you're better off using a free raster program, like GIMP.

Paint shop is like Photoshop?

Nope. Two different companies: Paint Shop is owned by Corel, Photoshop by Adobe.

DDS file editing?

One thing that might be geting in your way: you're using the trial edition. They might cut some features until you buy the full version.

The Freeware Gimp has a plugin for everything!
What kind of data is in a DDS, anyways?

Plus you'll still have layers and multiple undos!

it'll even convert all those pre-made brushes you used!

And... not to plug his site, but he has another tutorial. It's more 'artsy', but it should get the job done. If you don't have a tablet, you can replace 'random' for pressure.

Like i said, Black/white/red.
GIF works nicely (color-wise, at least) for this one, but i'll upload a .png if you need it.

When you're limited by color, you really have to work on texture and form.
Whaddya think? Should I clean it up some more? I think i went a little crazy with the texture pencil.

.png is the file type. Lossless compression and all that. It makes for sharper lines and more accurate colors.

It should be a Save As or Export option, depending on which program you're using... Paint should have the option too.

Oh, this looks like fun. I'm in. Black/White/Red seems like a 'safe' choice to start with.

May i recommend COLOURlovers for choosing your colors?

shading?

Well, it looks like black/white (unless they are your base 'colors') are out. If you tinted it, you'd be adding black.
What about using gradients or transitions between the two colors? Or messing with the opacity?

Or, we could just suck it up innovate. Use the mid-tone in one place as the as the shadow on another.

Sometimes with backgrounds, Less is more. If you insinuate detail, instead of actually drawing it in there, it'll keep the viewer from being distracted from the actual subject of your video.

And yes... it will reduce lag.

Posted: 07/30/09 10:50 AM

Forum: Art

Publish it, don't use export. There's a difference. Publish gives you finer control over the final image, like resolution, size and quality.

Just make sure you uncheck .swf and .html options before you publish, or you'll end up with 4 files with the same name.

mess with it a bit, after a certain point, the tail of the M can still be read.

Also... it looks flat. Are you going to change the outlines/volume once you have the form down?

...CorelDraw is a vector program, and probably doesn't have much use for pressure data that a wacom can provide. Plus, accurately poking at verts with a tablet pen is annoying. You're best off staying with the mouse.

On the other hand... I think those tablets sometimes come with a trial/stripped down version of Painter.

As for a scanner... Ask a friend? Or save up, some are pretty cheap. Especially compared to a Tablet.

Next time try the Lounge, or the tech support thread, so you don't have to bend or ignore the rules.

it's looking good!
From what i remember of Paint.NET, it has trouble getting soft shadows, so I'd recommend using GIMP as another free alternative.

No matter what the program, the work flow is usually the same. Once you clean up your scanned pencil work a bit, put it on a separate layer. Somewhere on the layers toolbar, you can set the blend mode from 'normal' to 'darken' or 'multiply'. Both of these options will make layers under it darker.

Then, you just paint on a layer below it!

(I'm guessing that's what you mean by one level?)
