But for what I really use to produce music - my guitars and my guitars' equipment (tuners etc.), amps, pedals, mics, recording equipment & speakers, I guess it goes over 6,000. That's not including how much electricity has been used on operating all of this.

Renting the rehearsal room for the band and guitar lessons - 800 a month.

Fixing the guitars and amps when they have issues - 500 (that's about the price of the best DAW, right?).

Strings (estimated) - 150 (This pays for a great software).

Adaptors - 60 (that's what the license costs, according to jarrydn).

Gets you into perspective, DAW users, huh?

The forums is about software. Many of us DAW users, especially myself, could go on and on with hardware. Why would you assume that those who use a DAW have no hardware? Regardless, your post doesn't really fit into the discussion at all. It's just a "Look at how much money I spend" e-peen post.

Agreed, Maestro. There are a ton of kids out there that aren't paying for this stuff. I suppose the best proof I can provide is to do a random search for torrents of different software packages. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of seeders and leechers.

Myself, yes. I currently own my software. Did I always own what I purchased? No. I never understood why I would pay hundreds of dollars for something that might not suit my needs. Once I realized that the software was for me, I bought it.

Hree's what I own:

FL Studio 8 XXL Producers Edition (Additional license paid for unlimited free updates)
Absynth 4
East West Quantum Leap Complete Composers Collection PLAY Edition (which includes:)
-QL RA
-QL Pianos Gold
-QL Voices of Passion
-StormDrum 2
-Symphonic Choirs
-Symphonic Orchestra Gold

It's nice to know I own this software. You appreciate your stuff so much more when you own the physical copy of it (Not to mention when you shell out teh cash for stuff you FORCE yourself to use it).

Hopefully there is still a bit of time as I'm waiting for some expensive software to arrive that'll allow me to compose some instrumental music. I've got some ideas in mind specifically for this game.

Simply "save as new version" each time you make drastic changes to the project file. You'll be glad you did.

This is pretty much the truth if you're getting pretty serious into a track. In all honesty, which I need to be better about myself, you should create entirely new folders for each track and get used to saving as new versions inside each individual song folder. This really helps incase you want to go back to an earlier version or if an instance like this happens and your file takes a knife to its own throat.

Topic: How to be a video game musician?

Posted: 10/22/09 09:26 AM

Forum: Audio

Like others have said; it takes time. I wrote tracks for free for quite some time until I had received offers from miltiple developers, and now I write commissioned music for these guys on a regular basis.

Many flash developers are looking for short/sweet loops as it saves on space in their game. I haven't checked out your stuff personally, but you'll want to get familiar with looping anywhere from 40-60 seconds of audio and not have it become annoying to hear over and over.

I've written tunes for well over 2 dozen flash games now, and am currently in the middle of a few projects. Just keep at it, and perhaps you'll have the same outcome.

I'm not sure why it would be an issue for a composer to suggest a theme of theirs for the OP. The OP could sift through thousands of tracks or listen to a few suggested tracks from composers who feel it may fit. In the end, as long as the original composer is credited, it really doesn't matter.

Meh, I enjoy them all. Rockband, Guitar Hero, Rock Revolution... I am by no means an elite player, I generally play between medium and hard on Guitar and Hard on Drums.

I just enjoy the games with a group of people. The ONE feature I like about rockband over guitar hero is the ability to choose your difficulty AFTER a song has been chosen.

That's it.

People should spend more time playing Sacred 2.... these servers are becoming deserted. Big Time.

personally i think he shoulda been given about $1. that's about what a music download costs from iTunes or whatever(<---this amount may not be accurate, but i'm just saying. most musicians don't get $20 for a song.)

Most musicians make a whole hell of a lot more than $20 for songs to be made specifically for someone.

In all honesty, it was an interesting game. I put maybe 4 or 5 hours into it before I just lost interest. Mind you, I grew up in the Atari & NES days, so the Dragon Warriors and Final Fantasy RPG's are more along my lines. Now, I did love Super Mario RPG, however the whole feel and control of the game just felt...weird and caused me to lose interest.

I suppose I'm too much of a traditionalist.

Like with any forum on the net, people should lurk; become familiar with the way things are done. I agree that people shouldn't just come out and say "hey asshat, don't post the same BS everyone is posting!", but instead should just leave a reasonable reply and move along.

We want a friendly community.
