I think Homestuck just had a really slow start. You have to get a few dozen pages in before things even get remotely interesting.

Still, it eventually gets to (spoilers) time travel, influences from other game sessions, Elder Gods, heroic sacrifices, and the kids' actions somehow being related to a battleground in the place where their dream selves are.

Response to: Homestuck Posted June 5th, 2010 in General

The way I would describe Homestuck is--

A webcomic choked to the gills with in-in-IN-jokes and a rather surreal idea of what qualifies as 'funny.' It combines this odd sense of humor with the gimmick of pretending to be a game with legitimately enjoyable writing and storytelling.

tl;dr It's a webcomic with a pretty cool fandom and I think it's awesome so read it dammit.

This is an exciting idea and maybe I'll shoot that one off myself next time I'm talking to someone who says that global warming is bullshit.

Response to: - The Regulars Lounge Thread - Posted December 2nd, 2009 in Politics

My girlfriend and I were talking about what gifts to get each other, when she pointed out that she's Jewish and I'm an atheist. We had a good laugh over that one.

From the Cape of Good Hope to the Newfoundland islands,
The sands of Iran to the Panama isthmus;
From Outback Australia to Inverness Highlands
It's time to take arms in the War Against Christmas!

We'll make them forget all the Truth of the season-
The sacrifice planned by a god up above-
And have them believing some bastardized reason
Like giving, or kindness, or caring or love!

I'll cruelly and callously help out a stranger
Who's down on his luck or has suffered some loss,
I won't even speak of the babe in the manger
Whom God sent to Earth to get nailed to a cross;

When the winds of December conspire to freeze us
I'll help collect sweaters and coats for the poor,
Neglecting to make any mention of Jesus,
Whose torture is really what Christmas is for.

My hatred of Christmas will focus my labors
On weaving an atheist fabric of lies-
For instance, I'm giving to all of my neighbors
Gift baskets, cookies, and fruitcakes and pies!

I'll spare you the rest of the preachy copypasta.

Ever since coming to college and being surrounded on all sides by God-hating commie feminist fag-enabling liberals, I've slowly realized that all conservatives are my personal enemy. Even if they themselves don't believe it, the two-party system makes it so that they are official allies of the people who would have all non-christians and non-whites put into re-education camps and deported, respectively.

Response to: Hiroshima and Nagasaki justified? Posted December 1st, 2009 in Politics

Perhaps a bit of a non sequitir, but Japanese attitudes towards Hiroshima and the concentration camps are something that few people really address. I know someone who was in one of those camps and-- as is the case with most of her generation-- they do NOT talk about it. Even if you ask, they'll probably give you some kind of "it's in the past" and change the subject.

We don't see organizations popping up everywhere dedicated to Japanese-American justice and awareness. We don't see a 50-year-long trend of people being educated about Japanese-Americans, like we did with the Jews. Because that generation of Japanese-Americans... they don't talk. One theory goes that because of a tradition of reserve and falling quietly into line, they just don't want to call attention to themselves. They would see it as being childish, perhaps? No way to know.

And that doesn't explain why there's no lingering hate towards Americans in their society that I know of. My dad went there and said that the attitude of the Hiroshima memorial is a very soft, non-confrontational "never again."

Response to: Communism? -discussion Posted May 28th, 2009 in Politics

Although communism has potential, it is often brutally mutilated y communist dictators. They have too much greed, and the ram their country into the ground (STALIN).

Yes. History shows us that corruption has the potential to turn communism into total, consistent failure.

Also, the greed of the citizens. In communism, everyone works to benefit the other person, not themselves. The natural selfishness of man can then lead to the nation's demise.

... so... you agree that communism goes against human nature? And that human nature tends to lead people to go against communism, thus destroying it?

Are You Homophobic? Posted October 21st, 2008 in Politics

I'm starting to think that there are tiny traces of homophobia ingrained into us in ways that we have no hope of defeating without a concerted effort. I see it all the time even in people who are absolutely not homophobic by their own standards. It's weird. I dunno what got me all hypersensitive about this. No it's not because I'm gay, I've long since finished my bi-questioning stage.

If a guy thinks lesbians are hot, but who makes fun of masculine girls or says they're gross, then that's definitely homophobic. You're being a hypocritical jackass who thinks lesbian porn is hot, yet you have absolutely no sensitivity for how things actually are. Girls can kiss as much as they want, if they're both hot, otherwise ewww, they have no business being how real lesbians are.

Also, if you acted that way in front of a real lesbian they'd probably think it was pretty disrespectful.

This next one is really really common-- if you say that you're okay with gays as long as they stay away from you/as long as they don't hit on you, then you are also definitely being homophobic. If you're like this, then your pro-gay rights front is probably just you being politically correct and standing up for the cultural ideal of rights and equality, while still harboring a deep-seated discomfort with and disgust towards gays. If you were faced with an openly gay person, you would probably feel unsafe and a little grossed out.

The last one is arguable and not always true, but it's also the one that I surprised myself with. I think that, sometimes, if you say "I'm not gay, but..." before every post, you're being homophobic. I feel like at least some people who say that are worried that someone might assume that they're gay. It's like saying "I don't want anyone to think for a second that I'm one of them, but I agree with these people on this point."

Of course it's possible that people are saying that just to show that they are neutral, and that they believe this or that without actually being gay (in which case it would be assumed). I'm mostly talking about people who say it because they're afraid that someone might assume that they are gay otherwise. I see those words said so much (I'm not gay but...) that I think that at least some people might add it for that reason.

Response to: Is america really a democracy? Posted October 18th, 2008 in Politics

America is not a democracy. First off, the correct term for America's governmental system is 'republic.'

Also, we elect representatives from one of two parties, which is really no decision at all. It creates a pointless and limiting "us versus them" attitude that inevitably forces us to decide between the lesser of two evils, which is awful. Oh, and it starts a lot of pointless catfights. We have little-- scratch that, we have zero control over what happens in our country.

Did anyone else see this and literally laugh out loud?

You can take off the tinfoil hat now.

I, for one, welcome our new liberal masters IF THEY'RE GOING TO PUT A CHIP IN MY ARM THAT INSTANTLY TELLS HOSPITALS ABOUT MY PENICILLIN ALLERGY.

And-- shit, why are we afraid of being tracked, anyway? I don't care if the government knows that I woke up in the middle of the night to go eat at Taco Bell. They can even monitor who I have sex with for all I care. I don't think they have the ability to use that information against me, and (them being my government and all) they are obligated to use it for my benefit.

These things are being developed by a private company, they currently have no feature that will allow anyone to ping your location from long distance, and in the future they might be used as blood sugar monitors.

Yes, blood sugar monitors. They're going to be used to save lives. OMG KEEP THEM AWAY FROM ME.

So, if say the republicans do not come up with a miracle and as mathematically calculated Mccain would lose to obama,

Source please. This is news to me.

1) Rascism can carry more diplomatic weight then sexism, wars are fought over skin color, not gender.

If Obama being black and Hilary being a woman are a big deal to you, then GTFO the polls, and you can follow that up by GTFO-ing the country.

2) Obama has very little experience, while hillary was behind the scenes with bill, making her overall more experienced.

Frickin' lies. They were both senators all the same. Maybe being behind the scenes with Bill would make Hilary a little more well-acquainted with how things are run in this country, but to say that "Obama has very little experience" is very false.

Also, Bill Clinton was the best orator since JFK according to my family (I never listened to any JFK speeches.) So if Hilary learned so much from being behind the scenes with Bill, what the crap happened to her public speaking skills?

3)Obama instead of choosing by experience, would choose all his advisors, and leaders of cabinets (im not good with bueracracies) as proffesors and doctors, not a good pick, intelligence and experience dont always come in a package.

What the heck are you talking about?

4) Obama is relatively young and could fall under sway easier.

Oh, so Ronald Reagan was a good President because he was old.

Vote Republican-- save Hawaii! Posted March 4th, 2008 in Politics

An important part of Hilary's platform is that she wants to reduce government funding and leave Iraq. Fair enough, except that Hilary doesn't just want to leave Iraq to save the money we're spending to keep things in line there. She wants to drastically reduce the funds spent, and the only way to do that (as any strategy game player knows) is to reduce upkeep.

Back in the day, when Hilary's husband was in the seat of power, they were seriously considering shutting down Pearl Harbor. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that a naval/air base on an island in the middle of the ocean is pretty logical.

The military is right up there with tourism (and, in recent days, is gaining ground) when it comes to job providers in Hawaii. You cannot drive through town without seeing a helicopter drill, a military rec center, or a war memorial.

An extreme left-wing liberal, or more to the point, Hilary Clinton, would be brutal on Hawaii. Increasing already ridiculous taxes and the fucking-stupid-even-by-democratic-standa rds welfare system here are the last things we need. It's not hard to imagine that this combination would cause Hawaii to collapse.

Response to: Freemasons? Posted January 29th, 2008 in Politics

I've heard some interesting things about the Masons, such as that they worship Lucifer (which would be illogical, because the name Lucifer is from the Abrahmic religion, so they would not worship an angel, fallen or otherwise) and that they were originally something like a Masons' Guild which was made mostly in the interests of protecting the secrets of the trade.

Dammit, I never get the same answer twice.

Response to: Legal Drinking Age Posted January 26th, 2008 in Politics

My only problem with the drinking age in America is that by the time we're allowed to drink, we'll be out of the house and probably away at college. I want to experiment with alcohol, and I want to do it NOW, while I still live in a familiar place, and have my old friends and my family in case things turn bad. My mom agrees wholeheartedly with this, since she wants my first drink to be in a controlled environment.

you stated that we are just piles of dirt, which can be interpreted as "we have no worth". you also stated that we're all JUST big piles of molecules, also anotting little to no worth. So does that mean your girlfriend means nothing to you, emotionally, sexually, materially, etc?

Piles of dirt with sex drives, emotions, and fine motor skills. What, you think a pile of literal dirt could operate a computer? Emotions, sexual desire, and materialism are all built into your survival instinct to some point. Don't dogs give off signals that can help you tell what they "think?"

Maybe all of the thoughts going through my head are nothing but a bunch of chemicals flying between organic membranes.
