I think that the best FF is the X (10-1), reasons:

Sound: i know that every ff after X incorporated sound, but X has spoken dialogs ingame, not only in cutscenes or cinematics, in fact many random dialogs with random people have sound, and that makes the hell of a difference in the gameplay experience.

Story: is a story that is constantly surprising you, not like zelda that is just "save the princess", its really well thought, and have a good timing combination between the time you are fighting and time updating the story (except at the very end when story slows down cuz you have to do random stuff), i must confess that now, in my 21s i cryed at the end.

Focus: the gameplay is focused, you know where to go, u cant get lost but still u can explore if u wish

Battle system: it has a unique battle system, its turn based but the order and frequency of the turns depends of the stats of each character and mob, therfore u can make a strategy, the others only consist in pressing the buttons faster.

Graphics: ffx cinematic graphics are at the level of PlayStation 3 cinematic graphics, ive seen FFX and FF XII cinematics in the same led tv and they are at the same level indeed

Funny fact, i started FFx like 7 years ago, and i abandoned it at the final (i have the english version of the game an at that time i knew much less english than now (ye i know that i probably made a lot of grammar errors no need to mention it), and i didnt understand the sphere grid system nor the story, then i gave up the game still this year and i was susprised to see that the "final" in which i was struck was indeed Seymour´s 1 battle, which is like half of the game).

Then i played other FF games ut just didnt made it for me, i checked some online forums and each of those had a different ranking of FF´s, what i think is that ppl usually likes more their first FF, maybe cuz its surprising for them how long the game is between other things, but as i said, FF-x is unique in the ways i´ve explained
