Topic: Rage's gift to you: Abusive reviews

Posted: 06/11/08 02:59 AM

Forum: Where is / How to?

I forget: when blowing the whistle on a spam-animation, do you blow the malicious one? By spam animation, I mean daily submitting basically the same animation over and over with good preloaders followed by a malicious loop.

Here's what I mean http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/44 3752

The group that's posting the Adair Tishler spamimations was the same one that submitted the Andrea364 spamimations, and since those ones were forcibly removed from the site, I would asume that these new spamimations would also get deleted by an admin.

So it's the malicious whistle, right?

Just wondering, do you think this guy's review for There She Is!! step 3 is abusive?

I marked it as so because he doesn't give any constructive criticism; he just basically calls There She Is!! "gay pokemonfox manga hentai animation" and goes on to say anyone who enjoys it is gay. I just think the way he berates Sambaksa and flings around the word "gay" makes the review abusive, not to mention his small minded, short sighted, preconcieved notions about people and genres.

So, do you think it's abusive too?

I'm pretty sure this submission is stolen. It says shockarcade.com in the game, and I'm sure that I've seen it elsewhere on Newgrounds. The level design is very familiar.

Anyway, I think you know what to do

I'm gonna say humor, 'cause it's the only one that's plausible. It's not an icon, and while the case could be made that my ranting about icons is an attempt to bring about justice for the icon-less, I'd rather think that my writing style is humorous, and so I classify it as humor.

That's awesome that they're planning on making an icon stat. It will definitely make the work more motivated.

At 1/16/08 12:49 PM, Cyberdevil wrote: I make icons

Thank you for finally mentioning that. I also have done a lot of icon work for flash animations that don't have icons. The work is a tad overwhealming, and I haven't done much of it recently because there's no stat for how many icons you've made, but I still think it's rewarding work, and work that more people should do in there spare time. The icon is the first thing that people see of a flash, and not having one automatically set the idea in people's minds that the submission sucks. So, I think more people should contribute in that way.

I also post the occasional flash animation every once in a while, at least the ones I think the community will like. I think my Captain Hampton and The Midget Pirates animation is a good one that gives people a laugh when they see it, so I guess I make people laugh.

I also think that I contribute by not compromising my principles when it comes to those crappy spam serries. Everyone knows the ones I'm talking about: the "round the world in 80 days" serries, or the "gotta catch all 493 with Hitler" serries; the ones that are mindless, crappy, and are only there to bolster people's stats. A lot of people have given up on the fact that they will pass, and give it a 2 so that they can get a protect point to bolster their own stats. But I don't compromise my principles and still vote 0, since they are usually crappy, and deserve it. I may not get the protect point, but at least I know that their score will be more reflective of the effort they put into it. I think if just a dozen more people stuck to their guns and voted zero, those flashes wouldn't make it through, 'cause they always just barely pass.

So, those are my contributions: icons, humor, and justice.

Topic: Audio Parody rules?

Posted: 08/17/07 07:44 PM

Forum: Audio

I'm a little confused still about the Audio portal regulations about parodies, and thought I would ask the experts before making the song I'm thinking about making.

So what are newgrounds rules about parodying copyrighted music? I know that it doesn't break copyright laws, since, well, Wierd Al has built a career around it. But do they allow it on the Audio portal?

More specifically, I'm looking to make a parody of the University of California, Berkley fight song: The Sturdy Golden Bear. I'm planning on recording my parody lyrics over a recording of the song that is freely distributed on the Cal Band website, and turning the resulting parody into the Audio portal. Does anyone think that this would be removed because of where I got the recording, or because it's a copyrighted fight song (it's probably almost free domain by now), or because Wade loves Cal, or any other reason? I don't want to make the track if it's just gonna be removed from the audio portal and get me in trouble.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Yeah, but my username isn't my Artist name. It's not, technically, giving me proper credit, since people who know me by my artist name will be confused as to who made it, me or some guy with this username, if they don't know that it's my username on NG.

Well, sucks that I can't change it. I guess I'll have to find somewhere else to put it so I can send it to people for exposure.

Topic: ID3 tags changed on submissions?

Posted: 07/29/07 03:53 AM

Forum: Audio

I just came to realize, as I downloaded my own track, that when you submit a track to the audio portal, it changes the ID3 tags to show that the song is by the submiter's username. Is there any way to change this? 'Cause I had my own ID3 tags all added in and everything, and then I come to realize that all the tagging I did was for nothing if Newgrounds is just going to delete them and replace them with something that's much less representative of the song.

Anyway, I'm just currious if there's a way to turn that off, or something. 'Cause I want to keep my tracks tagged as I tag them, and if Newgrounds can't do that, I guess I'll have to find somewhere else to be my main music showcase.

Never mind. I guess it was the audio converter for some reason. I just tried a different one, and it worked just fine. Maybe it just had something to do with restarting the computer, but I doubt it.

Anyway, if anyone finds this thread because they have this problem in the future, just use the MediaConvert converter that's in the "Audio converter" thread. It's near the bottom of the first page.

Scratch that: I understand, again, what the frequency is, and I know for a fact that it should be in 44.1 kHz. It was a wav because of how I exported it, but then I converted to mp3 and my converter is defaulted at 44.1 kHz. So I'm pretty darn sure it's a fine mp3.

And the reason I know that it's not the problem is because it won't even take mp3's I've ripped off of CD's, which I only tried to upload to see if it would work on mp3's I knew for sure were 44.1 kHz. But none of the files I try are getting past this silly "that's not a valid .mp3" error.

Is the mp3 less than 4 megs and at 44.1 kHz?

I know it's less than 4 megs. And I would assume it's at 44.1 kHz, since that's most standard, right? But I don't know how to check the kHz, or what it's a measure of. How does one check that feature of an mp3?

Well, I'm having trouble with the submission process. I have my audio in mp3 format, but when I try to upload the mp3, it tells me "that file does not appear to be a valid .mp3." But I know it is. I even tried to upload some mp3's that I know are mp3 (stuff I downloaded), just to see if it was my converter or something that was screwing up. But it still said "that file does not appear to be a valid .mp3."

So, I'm at a loss for what to try. I know the audio works because it plays in my audio player on the computer, and it works on my friend's computer as well. Is this just a newbish error I'm gettin? Or are the guysos working on something that's causing the submit page to not recognise mp3's?

It might be a little flash loop when I make him, so I might not be able to post it here. It'll definitely find its way to my deviantArt once I get around to it, though.

Kind of off-topic, Sorry.

Well, they'd see you if you're not very trained, which is why there aren't many ninjas that pick white as their neutral color.

I am a ninja that's chosen white as my neutral color, though, and it's because I've recieved extensive training on how to blend into bright light like it was a shadow. Therefore, white garments are very helpful. I find that this is actually a much easier way to go, once you master hiding in plain daylight, since no one expects to get attacked by a ninja in the middle of the day. If only I had a quarter for all the times I've been able to walk right up to a target in the middle of the day and run him through with my blade without him even seeing me.

Sucks too, 'cause I was going to link to the new user page from my webcomic to point people in the direction of my flash animations. I guess I'll still do that, it'll just be confusing that this username is different than all the rest of my uniform usernames from other art sites (dA, sheezyart, forums, the whole lot of them).

I guess that'll show me to base a username off of my first chosen ninja name. Ninja names are usually pretty retarded when you come of age, so you end up changing them later. I'm known as The Ninjkabat nowadays, ever since I joined the Aquacadets.

But anyway, I guess being stuck with this name isn't the worst thing in the world. It's just dissappointing.

Oh, I didn't know that there was a way to do it in the past. That's useful information to have.

But for the time being, I think I'll just stick with what I have now. I don't want to bother Tom about something so trivial, especially when he's probably focused on issues with the redesign right now.

There's no way to change your username, is there? I know that the username isn't the most important thing, since it always displays your "first and last name" everwhere, and you can change that. I'm just wondering if there was a proceedure to change your login name somwhere on the site.

I'm guessing not, but I thought I would check.
