yes, now a whole flood of lvl 1 n00bs will start blamming out ZEROS without a care of being deleted, while higher ranked users must tow the line, for we are owned, for our very patronage. I didn't get a warning - not quite lvl 13, or 17.. or 29 i guess... :D

At least your harsh comments, and Wades MANY responses brought this to light (cut to the chase as it were). He and Liljim and Tom now have enough control over what was once a megalithic beast, and are prepared to use their new powers of surveillance, and crack da whip.

Every site has Mods, just NG doesn't need anymore than a few. I recently complained about a NEW signee who posted nearly 800 times in two weeks, but fuck all that ever did. Although i later thought this might be an Admin Tease (ya never know nowadays ;) It's suffice to know that Wade doesn't have a posting limit, and can manually protect any movies he wishes. The System has changed from within, and we are PRIVILEGED to even hear about it.

Hmm, yep, got my point across, and no foul remarks. Now back into my lvl 1 account for a DAMN GOOD BLAMMING of the portal !!! Mweehheaagaha!!!!!!!1

The 1st Clock sucked at Flash (but still made lots of flash, and then got really good at making suk flash) and those "Proper Clocks" made good Flash, and became Clocks as a sort of revenge. "Imposter Clocks" can't make good flash, or even really sucky flash, just REALLY GAY FLASH!!

so DO NOT MAKE GAY FLASH - and you'll be ok
BUT DO MAKE SOME FLASH - or you are still an imposter.

At 1/9/03 04:24 PM, omega10mg wrote:
like if i make a ball and movies it around as a buttom.. i animat the movment... and when i click it want another movie symbol to replace it how?

the main timeline is where you make an animated movie. When you want sprite swapping or buttons then you make movieclip objects. Buttons have code directly on the button, but other movieclips can be "double clicked" so as to enter each movieclips personal timeline (which also starts frame 1, frame 2, etc) and you can also layer movieclips (movieclips inside buttons, movieclips inside other movieclips, buttons inside movieclips).

Make a ball, then "convert to symbol -> movieclip", doubleclick the ball object to enter the balls new timeline and put a STOP(); action on the first frame. Frame 2 onwards can be some new design or animation (can be many frames long) and at the end put another STOP(); action. Finally go back to the main timeline (by doubleclicking on the stage) and "convert to symbol -> button" the new ball object. This will make a movieclip within a button. Now put PRESS or RELEASE code on the button itself (right click the button to bring up menu -> ACTIONS) and tell the ball to GOTOANDPLAY(2).. to animate the ball or explosion.

NOW, everything i've said is easy except for 1 thing. Calling movieclips within buttons is very advanced coding (but not impossible). So instead, make a ball, "convert to symbol -> button" first, then convert this button to a movieclip second. This way you have a button inside a movieclip - WHICH IS 10x EASIER TO CODE! ..and remember to name the movieclip!! ;O)_*

Response to: Voting 0 on movies... Posted January 10th, 2003 in General

At 1/10/03 12:23 AM, Istari wrote: I don't post much on the forum, but I felt this was an especially relevant topic. Wade, you are making a big mistake montioring people's votes, even those of moronic assholes who vote 0 on everything they come across.
I consider Newgrounds to be one of the best sites on the internet not only because of its great content, but because of its unique democratic process, where users get to interact with and change the content of the website, both thru voting and submitions.
This unique power that we users possess is not only cool in practice, but also a big FUCK YOU to all the censors out there who slam NG for its "inappropriate content". We, the users, make what we want, watch what we want, and choose what we want. And thus Newgrounds isn't a dictatorship controlled by an individual or a corporation, but a democracy ruled by the masses with rules enforced by a government of sorts- you.
However, once you begin to mess with our vote, you start becoming the same as all the censors out there who want to take NG off the air because of what THEY think should and shouldn't be on the net. Not only are you messing up the voting system, but you're polluting the basic, fundamental message of the website, which is one of anti-censorship and freedom of speech.
I know that you can argue that you will only be censoring the most serious offenders, but that's not the point. It's the PRINCIPAL that matters. Once you begin censoring a few people you're on a slippery slope, since you guys will be the ones deciding the rules AND enforcing them. Anyone who votes a 0 on anything will have that thought hanging over their heads- "am I over my quota? will I get banned from the site?"
Please reconsider. The teeny increase in the accuracy of the vote will require a sacrifice in principal, a most unworthy tradeoff.

Well done Istari, that's a better paraphrase of the "We Run Newgrounds, Welcome!" than i've ever read before!!

WadeFulp wrote;
We're not focusing on people voting 0 on the established movies, unless we find certain users targeting certain authors out of some evil prejudice.

Now that's serious, because it goes both ways. "I'm a street-Judge, ..so I AM THE LAW!!" is what rank and voting power represents - AND why we come back day after day after day... You have to balance users over authors, and user traffic over quality flash, and one persons racist comment over another persons private beliefs. That's a lot of balancing, and best left to the masses to sort among themselves. (WHY else do we all have weapons and power)

At some stage protection could be raised to 200, and then we'd get a fairer average vote (50 or 100 still isn't high enough under the new Judgement system) because if a quality movie comes in, we'd all like to get a point on it..

Any demarkation between what is excessively offensive, or even stolen or crap is nearing impossible (from 0 -> 5) because JUST the music might be stolen, or JUST the code might be crap or stolen, or JUST the Tricky Clown might be offensive (at teh edn)

Recent upgrades have improved the Portal - that's for sure - keep em coming!!

Movie storyboards are just an evolution of comics, which also evolved into Disney style movie produtions..

It's evident that we are heading towards fast and easy story telling with pictures (or our artistic interpretation) of life and such..

The "right brain" theory isn't anything esoteric (like eastern philosophy) ..it's like when you are in love. You can remember the girls face, or smell, or some chartacteristic about her even hours/weeks later. And it makes you feel very creative in your life. It's THAT feeling - the level your brain is at (or like a beautiful sunset that lingers in one's mind) ..and you feel it, as words couldn't quite express, so art or emotion takes over. That's why the "gaa gaa.." over some "gaa girl" you saw. When we feel inspired to create or draw, we go to that part of the brain that has to express without words (except when "writing with a passion" like in poetic form, or writing a song). Or if we want to be a paid artist, then that IS (becomes) our passion. Then we love drawing so much as to see vividly and feel emotionally like we are in love with what we draw.

..that's how it kinda works - creation - then later the realisation "..OMG!? did i draw that?!"

KODEHAK vrs KOPYWRONG? Posted January 8th, 2003 in Politics

..this topik could easily go in the programmer forum, but (imho) it's a political football..

New copyrights losing ground??

A jury found that Russian Dmitry Skylarov's program which can crack Adobe eBook software DID NOT violate the law - a crucial ruling in the struggle over ne provisions under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) a U.S. law aiming to modernize intellectual property rules for the digital age.

Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Fred Von Lohmann said the arrest of the quiet 27 y/o mild-mannered Sklyarov was critical in galvanizing programmers to fight heavy-handed use of the DMCA. "He is a classic programmer," von Lohmann said. "He looks like them; he talks like them; he cares about the issues they care about - and for this he went to jail."

Sklyarov talked of the anxiety over the DMCA, "Nobody knows. Probably you'll do your work, and after that somebody comes for you to arrest you or something like that because the DMCA is very (broadly) written and many things can be linked with DMCA," he said.

But after a 17 month legal saga that's included a surprise arrest outside his Las Vegas hotel room, three weeks in jail, and visa tangles that almost prevented him from coming back to the United States for trial, Sklyarov has decided not to worry about situations over which he has no control. Sklyarov's case became a flashpoint for the battle between copyright owners seeking to maintain control over their material and programmers working to highlight security flaws.

After worldwide protests among programmers, Adobe backed away from its support of Sklyarov's prosecution, and even government attorneys set aside charges against him in exchange for his testimony in the remaining case against his own company.

Although Sklyarov returned to the United States specifically to testify as a government witness, prosecutors never called him to the stand, instead opting to play an hour-long edited videotape of Sklyarov's deposition in an attempt to characterize him as a hacker affiliate who knew his program could be used for evil intent. Prosecutors argued the product violated the DMCA, which outlaws offering software that can circumvent copyright protections.

"It's unfair," Sklyarov said of the government's plan to play a tape of him. The "government could ask questions and show them on tape, but (the) defendant couldn't ask (any) cross questions."

The defense later called Sklyarov as its own witness, and in a calm, cooperative manner, the boyish programmer testified that he never intended for the product to be used illegally. He said the software was designed to allow people to make backup copies of eBooks they already own or transfer the material to a different computer. Lohmann said he's not surprised that many jurors found Sklyarov's case sympathetic. "The jury saw this serious young man and not a copyright pirate," he said. "They must have said, 'Where's the bad guy here?'"

Finally last Tuesday, the jury acquitted ElcomSoft of all counts against it in this first case to test the criminal provisions of the DMCA.

MY thoughts??? COPYRIGHT LAW IS YET ANOTHER WAR AMERICA WILL LOSE!!!!!!!!!
