What is taught is that our experiences, concerns, curiosities, needs, what we know, what we want, what we wonder about, what we hope for, what we fear, what we like and dislike, what you are good at or not so good at is not of the slightest importance, it counts for nothing. What counts, and the only thing that counts, is what they know, what they think is important, what they want us to do, think and be.

School teaches us that interaction is not for school. School is for learning and in many schools one can't even talk to other children in the halls between classes; in more than a few, and some of these in stylish suburbs, one can't even talk to them at lunch. Splendid training for a world in which, when you're not studying the other person to figure out how to do him in, you pay no attention to them. In fact, one learns how to live without paying attention to anything going on around.

You might say that school is a long lesson in how to turn yourself off, which may be one reason why so many young people, seeking the awareness of the world and responsiveness to it turn to drugs.

*very nicely put*

..and now we are asked to study longer than any time throughout history. And when we finally get a job, we are expected to do additional study outside of regular working hours just to "stay ahead"

That's 25 years minimum (and doesn't it sound remarkably like "a first degree" jail sentence!!) and as previously mentioned, the uniforms and strict hours are what to expect of any prision environment, Yes? Smells of institutionalization and brainwashing doesn't it!

well, i think i was a very good student, and learnt to switch off pretty well :P ..and unlearning some of that can also take quite a while too. So now i'm being asked (no, forced!) to join Man-power just to find work in my chosen field. *gasp* But i personally can't think of a worse perpetrator of adult corporate enslavement- Totally a modern monopoly version of serfdom!! (or should i not be saying this so publically?? :)

i haven't seen Minority Report yet, but the theory goes along similar lines;

Besides the obvious criminal activity (murder, rape, terror) each citizen must state their prefered likes and phobic-dislikes, and once a database has sufficient details to start cross-comparisons, we would find groupings of individuals who all share the same asperations, and other groups who all share the same concerns. Where-ever there is cross-over (a conflict of interest) then the two groups must decide to be geographically seperate, or mediate to an acceptable level of both parties.

As long as the computation algorythms of all citizens stated intentions were sufficiently cross-referenced then the majority of people would find their life prospects are much improved than compared with todays selfish and over-disciplined model.

A simple example; I own a old car, and as long as it's condition is not diminished, i don't care that someone uses it while i'm not - as long as it is available when i need it. But if it can't be returned in time, then there would be a reference number to another vehicle in of similar value in the local vicinity which is also available (not currently needed) so i would requisition it on the proviso that it also be returned as and when it's needed.

Now here's the cruncher. The borrowing and lending of such assest is only done in a known loop! By this i mean that the borrower and lender (as well as being rated as equally responsible) are also linked in some way through a loop of shared favours. Similar to the six-degrees of seperation theory, but perfectly tabulated to be fairly, justly, and evenly distributed favours, including all necessary fuel vouchers ;)

This is just 1 example of no-one loses - everyone gains; a society based on the "no-one gets hurt" theory!

i mean, if the Kings were envious of each others wives then they might challenge each other to a dual to the death..
I don't understand the law against bigamy. It's acceptable in America to divorce and re-marry as often as you want, or even to re-marry someone you already have previously divorced, or not marry anyone and just "sleep around" with a few partners (safe sex of-course!) ..so my point is, why all teh lawyers fees?? Why say that marriage is still some kind of religous sacrament in our modern world full of lawyers and pre-nuptual agreements?

damn! sum1 beat me to it. ok NZ is dozens of islands but only two are substancial. New Zealanders are called kiwis (our native fat flightless bird)

The Brits arrived after the dutch had been and gone and claimed it for the Great Britain (couldn't be much further, geographically opposite ends of the earth ;) so they had to sign a "fairness" treaty with the native Maori, and even today there is heated debate over who owns what?! (this week is the sea-bed and fore-shore debate -lol)

Those early immigrants had no imagination so they named it after Zeeland in the Netherlands, and called the North Island - North Island, and called the South Island (..you guessed it) South Island. They are occasionally volcanic and so prone to earthquakes (similar to Japan in many respects)

Our Rastafarian MP (member of parliment) was interviewed on primetime TV last nite, and explained that herbs are mentioned in the bible, and furthermore, the World Health Organization state that weed is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco. He said he's a moderate smoker, and so far the local police hav failed to catch him buying his stash, for the simple reason that he doesn't buy his stash :)

Actually, i'm an Aussie who should have stayed in my hometown where weed is already decriminalized. Even Lord-of-the-Rings (a kiwi made film) director Peter Jackson smokes, and you might have noticed weed was shown in the film, just as it also appears in the original book (trilogy). When NZ finally decriminalizes weed (and expunges my criminal record for growing a single home pot-plant) then it will officially be the best country on God's-own green Earth!

Evil=anything that causes more harm than good (very vague non-religious definition)

When people like Bush say "Bring on Evil" they are infact showing their alligence to Evil by intent. This is not Geopolitical Entrapment. It's an all out request for the worst mayhem of opposing forces - with all the innocent casualties - so that "Victory over Evil" can be claimed for vague political ends. Such religious or political incitement will be the cause of more death and suffering which can only be likened to the Evil of extremists calling for a Ji-had, or Holy-War.

The are echos of past events in future events, just as much as future events echo of past events.. Bush may as well have said "Bring 'em on!!" before 9-11, and in context to the complete lack of threat awareness of that event, he's pretty much fulfilling his nations personal "death wish"

Forbidding it only makes them want to do it more, or if they comply for awhile, when they finally break free they go overboard. 90% of the shit kids do that fuck them up they wouldn't do if people would stop telling them not to do it. Or at least they wouldn't be drawn into it at such a young age and get addicted to bad behaviors. As far as schooling, we need a focus on research techniques as opposed to memorization. The pointlessness of taking in facts, memorizing them, spitting them out, and then forgetting them 6 months later accomplishes nothing. Instead we should have a focus on teaching them where to find the facts, help them find things that interest them, make them aware of the world around them, and get them as involved in the decision making processes of the nation and their communities as young as possible. If we make youth feel like human beings, they will be a lot more likely to act responsible and return the respect they are given.
I've personally always thought that putting children in concrete buildings with armed guards and putting them in uniforms and not allowing them to leave teaches them how to be model prisoners, not citizens. They end up the tools of authority, and not decision makers.

Couldn't agree more with both opinions. RoyBatty lays out a very strong case. Even as adults we have our rights eroded year on year..

here's a case in point; Drivers licences where i live used to be life-time licenses (at least until the age of 70 for eye testing, etc) but now like every other country we've turned the need for photo ID into a yearly revenue gathering excercise.

Many ppl didn't realise if their fancy *NEW* photo drivers license's expire, they now have to pay over $300 to renew them. I misplaced mine soon after i got one made, so i went back to get another one (seeing as they already had my photo and details on their computer) but was astounded to be told that a replacement license would cost more than the one i had just paid for!?

I asked why it should cost more when all my details were now digitally recorded under the new photo system? The answer i got confirmed that this is all a fvcken SCAM!

"Because we don't want people to get more than 1 license.. it's to stop fraudulent use"

But hang-on! Before we had licenses without photos and replacement was virtually free.. now WITH PHOTOS, i'm being told that whether i can afford a replacement is due to "increasing the cost in an effort stop fraud by ID theft"

*perplexed*

HOW CAN someone steal someones ID by getting multiple duplicated licenses if our photo is on there? o_O

HOW DOES that stop a more wealthy person from buying 10 or 20 licenses??

YES! ~~ SPOT THE MODERN-DAY SCAM!!! >:(

your impression is correct! but it's not just about rape. There's also communal bath-houses, or families sharing 1 tub at bathtime. "a closer physical cultural bonding" is kindof how it's been described.

>> re: Strange Ethics?

well... put 'rape' in the title and you're sure to get a better response ^_^

i have a fairly eclectic range of things to say on the topic, but seriously, it'll only put myself up for ridicule also.. (hmmm whether to bother??) ..anyway, here's the list of things that spring to mind;

Japanese women are shorter and look younger than their western counterparts of an equivalent age (many asian women in their 30's often claim thier youthful looks, petite bodies, and occassionally childish play-acting, as positives! ..and many a man would agree also!!

I remember reading one of these "overt asian girl" topics about a year ago where 1 guy summed up by saying something like "Goddam It! All you western guys complaining about Japanese social norms are really socially repressed and secretly jealous."

Now before jumping to conclusions, i'd like to point out that my "ex" and daughter are both japanese, and even thou i'm distinctly partial to asian women or asian porn for that matter (yeah, batchelor life has it's ups and downs - and sadly - i'm not talking of visits to the local love hotel's master suite :) ..but i'd be the first to admit i like these females with a naturally smaller constitution.

Some japanese women bemoan their smaller figures, but a few know of it's allure also. Needless to say, it's often hard to distinguish age (even japanese female porn-stars often shave to excentuate the positive!) ..it's almost more than culture.. it's wrapped up in the community psyche! Just not openly talked about. I'd go so far as to say it's almost genetically bred-in in fact!!

So, getting back to the subject of schools, and students, and techers, and magazines, and manga, and independant nature of young people these days the world over;

Recently in the UK we heard of the 12y/o girl who collected her passport and a few bucks and fled to Europe with the ex-US serviceman. For-krist-sake! That story really got too much global attention. Was it abduction?? Fuck NO! She is a fully mature adolecent who packed her posessions and eloped entirely voluntarily claiming an overwhelming love. So what happens? The media play the US ARMY and EVIL INTERNET trump cards to MAKE IT A BIGGER STORY ..than it really was.

Jeezuz, even my mum went from the UK to Sweeden when she was about 12 years old (sure.. but that was 50 years ago when society was innocent - Right?!) So, compare that with today when every member of society is primed to feel at risk from unknown terrors and complete evil madmen lurking behind every locked door - OMG!!??

Other nations (middle eastern or asian) actually condone sex or marriage at a younger age (even bigamy - shock and horror!!!!) than most western (christian) countries would ever allow! (oh, but Divorcing every year or so is perfectly normal?!?) In some countries it's based on historically driven motives of rural family structure. Sure, like western countries could really teach THOSE COUNTRIES about family or social morals.. haha - NOT!

So where does a japanese student stand on bullying either by society at large or by fellow peers? It's also been historical (based on a closed society) to keep things to oneself or suffer riddicule for being an outsider of the group (priming for adult characteristics in a stongly binded communitee)

The classic example is; "Child goes overseas with parents, and gets bullied when returning to japanese schooling -- WHY? ..because they are seen as the "odd one out" and not priveledged as such. This isn't necessarily good, but thinking it thru, it's stigma like this that makes Japan such a unique cultural landscape in an otherwise rapidly homogenized global setting.

** There you go.. ask for a lot of input, and suffer the overload of personal insight :]

-----
p.s. I DO NOT CONDONE the teacher/adult fondle/rape of young students, but ..i also think that the MODERN WORLD is failing to address the more explicit sexual overt media and communication options for young (Aids/STD education included) whilst also trying to keep obsolete puritin morals (innocent shcoolgirl-uniforms and long white socks) without considering the ever growing maturity of todays young (digitally savvy "busyness" ppl in their own right) who are exposed to sooo much of todays global adult experience.

OK, that's my 2 ..err 20 ©ents worth! :)

That is pretty much against the terms of the United Nations own mandate which is to avoid conflict at all costs. It's like the World Trade Oragnisation which is supposed to avoid trade embargoes, but they (majority member nation representatives) end up using retaliatory embargoes against unfair tariffs..?

So what happens? America said "If you won't (can't) overthrow independant nation regimes then we'll do it for you!" pre-emptively or whatever ..and that's where we all stand today.

How do you expect the United Nations to evolve as some kind of provocator between disputing nations (non-united nations) which is contrary to it's very name??

I do think that the security council is un-democratic (non-inclusive elitist sect within the organization) and even temporary (minor) members fall sway to common bribes.

Gezuz ..It's a new Millenium ..where's the new approach?

Rather than create a new branch, the whole organization needs a new structure which could at least start from a pretext of non-deadly response (including the proven to be life threatening trade embargoes) and build up from that new foundation (a right to life and liberty no matter the nationality, and despite or because of bad leadership)

Here's my radical suggestion thou; any un-toward behaviour from any geographical locale ...then you fly in the worlds homeless/hungry/poor (in search of a better life) or non-violent criminals (disreguarding all soveriegn concerns) or worldwide mass of civilian volunteers, or a flood of refugees posing as tourists, or the worlds sick and dying -- essentially saying, you cause trouble and we'll show you how things are pretty much worse somewhere else (for somebody else) and give you bigger problems to worry about; like who owns what?

..bombing with humans, instead of just bombing humans.

This all harks back to the days when convicts were sent to the far side of the globe like the dessert nation of Australia. Anyway, that's still my best alternative vision for teh future!
