I still hope to completely prove wrong everyone who ever doubted NG. Or implode, whichever comes first.
That is true in every respect. Overall, the flash today are much better than the flash back in the days. Many have the potential to be on frontpage, that's why there's so many icons now. But the content or themes on which they are based on are much different than before. It's much more bland now, back then it tasted good. I just miss the old Newgrounds' traditions. I miss seeing Pico more than the Tankman. I miss the variety in the Portal. That's what made me come back every day to see what's new in the Portal. I'm sorry but now... I probably check every other couple of days or whenever I have time because the thrill is not there every day like it used to be. Now I'm not doubting NG, but I'm doubting the community for not carrying on the old Newgrounds tradition.
I remember one horror flash that was really intense based on Clockwork Orange. I also remember FDA. Man, they were hilarious. I remember ClockCrew. I remember B. I remember trying to avoid many pointless ClockCrew animations. I remember Eskimo Bob. I remember ALL UR BASE R BELONG TO US. I remember the first time I saw Xiao Xiao 3. I remember how often Newgrounds was on the news and how often NG was spoken of at school. I remember so many things that I don't see any more these days.
Now... it just seems Newgrounds runs on parodies of current movies/video games. Animators today wouldn't dare animate such a cartoon or game like FDA. There was so much freedom of expression back in the day. It must've been a community thing. The countless submissions... thousands of people around the world would watch them whether they were good or bad or artistically beautiful or disgustingly outrageous. And people would review them with an open mind. I guess I wasn't around when the community evolved.
At 9/5/12 01:41 AM, Narcissy wrote: It's certainly no question that was the attitude of the old Newgrounds. However, keep in mind that Newgrounds was living off of 9/11. Users had a hate for Osama and expressed it artistically.
Another tragedy may occur and we users may rev up hate for it and once more express it. Still, if you want that attitude to come back, I do too, then you must be a light. Act as an example.
That's the problem.. It was a community effort. And at the time, the community was open to that kind of stuff. If you come out with stuff like that today, I don't think today's generation would be open to it the same way. Imagine if people were uploading torture games of celebrities still. Oh man. Of course this place would get so much traffic. But now that it's not getting as much traffic as before... they needed to revamp this website to make it ad-friendly.
Sucks how every thing revolves around money one way or another.
Sorry.. I got caught up playing Alien Hominid.

It's probably not as glamorous as it seems, but there's a charm of it that I love.
But it's 2012. Not 2001. There's plenty of automated video web sites, Newgrounds isn't special anymore. Does that it should die? No. Does that mean we should cross over to Youtube and be small fish in a large confusing pond? Certainly not.
What this boils down to is that we're a community. We're the ones who make Newgrounds. Sure Tom manages it, the staff edits it, but we're what truly makes Newgrounds Newgrounds. Newgrounds would not have evolved if it was still Tom's personal website. Instead he was a pioneer of what made the Internet as large, and flash integrated as it is.
So if we are what makes Newgrounds Newgrounds what does that mean for us? It means we, the users, have to govern it. We, the users, have to try to keep up the flow. We, the users, have to encourage other users to get into flash (and, of course, other mediums).
We can cry. We can complain. We can moan and groan, desire all we want to capture the good old days. It's not gonna come back. The best we can do is try to make new "good old days."
And, if you're a user who has no flash, feels the missing of the old days of NG, then perhaps you should try to make yourself useful and try to help fix a very obvious problem.
The answer is to submit. It's your choice, however. Keep letting Newgrounds sink or try to help it swim?
It seems you got over it faster than I am. It kinda hurts to know that the old Newgrounds is gone. The frontpage right now is entirely different than the screenshot of Newgrounds in 2002. Just look at the content. How can you compare Anti-Osama and Rooftop Skateboarding to the more modern frontpage with more user-friendly content. I tell ya, if the old school people were still here... they would be making games about justin bieber... a violent game... That's something you can't take away from the old Newgrounds.

I recall this place when there used to be a bunch of spam everywhere and I must say it's gotten more organized over the long years. The spam was worth getting through because of how fun Newgrounds was at the time. As far as this place being alive. There's only 100+ forum users online right now. Just like a person grows, so will newgrounds.
It's only logical that there will always be change, for the good or the bad.
It doesn't make a difference, because it's just the internet website.
It's not going to beneficial in your life in any way.
Wops, did I write all of that?
I see where you're going with the metaphor. I have been going to Newgrounds since 1997. Unless you have been coming to this site around that time, you won't understand how Newgrounds did make a difference. Before there was youtube, before there was even wikipedia, before there was even an iPhone. Before these distractions, there was Newgrounds. And it was a great getaway from the stress during the late 90s and early 2000s.
But you are right... people and things have to change... for the better or worse.

I don't mean to rant... but you know... I have been keeping it to myself for a really long time... but I need to get it off my chest now.
Newgrounds has changed a lot. The new look is very nice and all, but I really miss the old Portal.
Looking at several recent portal submissions, the view counts on most movies are very low. Games get a couple more hits because apparently every one loves to play games. Is that really what Newgrounds has come to? Just another website for games? What happened to the Portal? Where did every one go? Youtube? DeviantART?
It's not even the view counts that's bothering me or the massive submissions of games... I just miss seeing more creative animations that weren't necessarily the best. Nowadays, all the submissions are good because everyone's getting better at flash and everyone can afford a tablet. I also miss reading reviews about certain submissions that did not get the credit it deserved, before there was even a favorite function available on Newgrounds when the there was a gray and yellow interface. Now you have to really dig through the search bar to find one of those kinds of flashes possibly submitted around 2002. Speaking of the early years of 2000, do any of you guys remember how much patriotism Newgrounds showed during 9/11?
Not to get off topic now... don't get me wrong, I like the new Newgrounds too and there are still some user-submitted flashes out there "keeping it real" so to speak. But not as much as there were back in the days.
Ahh.. the good ol days... when Flash was known as Macromedia Flash (not Adobe). There was so much creativity, so much vulgarity, and so much blamming. It was amazing when good animations were uncommon. You had to dig through so many bad cartoons and games to come across a good animation or game. But it's not like that any more. Everyone's good at using Flash now. And there's so many games, that are copies of old games except with a different theme. Sometimes... I crave to see a first-time animator's work. I thought the Turd of the Week was entertaining at times but it seems they don't give that award out any more.
Then again... it is September... a busy month for everyone... so I guess this is where I'll be ending my rant. Maybe I'm wrong about this whole thing. Sorry and thank you for reading. For the record, I still love Newgrounds no matter what!
No doubt a college degree in animation is helpful, but it's not necessary because the industry is only interested in your skills shown through your work.
Self taught animators can easily buy the same book that college would supply you to learn how to animate. Apparently, college just prepares you for the professional world, but at the same time, a self taught animator can find out what you learned in college by simply asking questions... or from experience (trial and error).
So in the end, it really all just depends on what's inside your portfolio. If they like what they see in your portfolio, they'll call you in for an interview to make sure you're not a freak or douche bag or troll or forever alone guy (that is unless you put your picture in your portfolio, rofl).

1) Is there a preferred version of flash the community uses? I'm done with the trial on CS3, and I (just today) downloaded the trial for CS5, so trying to transfer my skills over to that one.
We still got some using CS3 and other old versions, but eventually every one will upgrade because CS5 does not save in CS3 or below.
2) The reason I ask - I'm having trouble finding tutorials for what I want to do. Flash is such a large program with so many capabilities, the tutorials I see, well I'm not even sure if they're relevant to my interests.
The tutorials you are looking for are essentially basic to animating with flash, so there are plenty of helpful tutorials for what you want to do.
What I'm looking to do:
Learn to lip synch animation.
http://www.flashframer.com/create-a-realistic-flash-animatio n-lip-sync/
you'll be able to read lips after this tutorial
Learn to add music and my own sounds.
very very easy..
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Flash/10.0_UsingFlash/WSd60f2311 0762d6b883b18f10cb1fe1af6-7ce8a.html
Learn how hand-drawn animation can be applied. Not interested in tweening or anything like that.
I assume you're interested in hand-drawn FBF (frame-by-frame) animation? Like flip book animation on yellow post-it stacks. There's several tutorials out there for that, but this might the most thorough:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/learning_guide/animation/p art04.html
keyframes and onion skins
In short: I'm looking to make cartoons.
I posted here a few weeks back. My credentials: I animate as a hobby, and I understand the principles of it. I just want to jump in and get started here in the community but I feel like there's too many choices in front of me for me to choose. I've searched the tutorials here on Newgrounds, Youtube, and Adobe, and nothing is really comprehensive or what I'm looking for. For reference, animation I did a few months back on another program: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9vodyDOKNI&context=C32f408bA DOEgsToPDskKP2ljPsc-_f-rmpV6z6MNF and a storyboard I just completed a few days ago: http://cndstoryboard.thecomicseries.com/comics/first
I don't know where to start, looking for advice or direction. Thanks in advance..
Really liking the detail in your art and the smooth animation. Seems like you already know how to animate with hand-drawn graphics with some tweening. Once you learn what you're looking for, I'm sure you'll have no problems with making a cartoon.
I look forward to seeing your future work.
For most types of animation:
Get great idea from imagination or inspiration
Jot down script while idea is fresh, then create storyboard in flash (Optional)
Record and import music or voice work, if any
Draw or import characters, objects, backgrounds, images etc.
Animate as much as you can before the idea goes stale
If you start to get animator's block, save file and come back to it
Add finishing touches (shading, erasing, pre-loader, sound effects etc.)
Finally, give credits wherever its due.
I see, thank you for the quick response.
The music starts (stream sync) and matches the frames early on, but the music is starts to go out of sync at about 4000 frames.
I'm just wondering if this is a common problem and if there's a way to fix it.
Thank you for your help.
Finished part 4, would also like to get feedback on it.
Thank you!
Staying motivated is what it's all about. Once an idea pops into your head, you gotta animate as much as you can in an .fla file while it's still fresh in your head. Listen to music, watch related videos for inspiration, and look for more ideas to get your creativity going. Don't stop until you get tired of it, so that when you save it and look back at it... you'll decide whether you want to finish it or not. Always look back at what inspired you to remind you of why you were animating this in the first place.
It's always good to finish what you've started because some people might be expecting a finished product.
What Adidaas said and you might as well make the NG pre-loader match the colors.
Also, the shadow of the jumping pony looks like it's off by a frame or two.
Overall, it looks nice!
At 2 hours ago, BCRice wrote: Does anyone have a workaround for this? I've thought about breaking the symbols up and "swapping" them as needed, but I've heard that you can't swap a symbol mid-tween in flash.
What I do when I need to swap a symbol mid-tween is split the tween by inserting a keyframe. That way you can swap the symbols. If you use ease tweening (100 or -100), you'll have to select and break up the whole tween so that you can swap the symbols while maintaining the motion tween. Sorry if this sounds confusing.
The redesign looks great! Graphically sexier.
What I don't like is no link for the Portal.
As an OG NG user and fan of the portal, I think the 'Classic Portal' deserves its own link in the navigation menu.
ThePortal is what keeps uscoming back to Newgrounds, artists and fans alike.
I thought it was awesome when they had flash movies on the front page advertising the portal with the Transformers music playing in the background. (whatever happened to that song?)
Overall, great renovation!
Whoops... sorry about the huge error in that last post.
*BANG!* (sound of one bullet hitting the tile floor)
The bullet entered in the left side of Al's temple and exited out his right ear.
"What the hell?!" I shouted, "Why did you do that?!"
"It had to be done." Jonathan said calmly, "You obviously couldn't do it because you knew the guy. It's a whole lot easier to shoot someone you don't know."
"You just don't shoot any one!" I replied aggressively, "Especially if they're tied down in a chair!"
"Shut the fuck up, you hypocrite" Jonathan responded, "You just shot a stranger outside not too long ago. Your first time too, right? Besides, we don't have time to waste on reminiscing about the past in front of somebody who has already turned into a zombie."
"This is different! I knew this person! We went to elementary school together." I answered. "Wait..."
(sounds of moaning and groaning coming from outside)
Jonathan and I walked quickly to the gated front door of Al's shop. We stopped as soon as we saw what was wandering outside. A group of zombies. One of them saw me and started walking towards our direction. Jonathan swiftly closed the front door and turned the locks. We pushed the nearest shelf to barricade the door and began to search for any thing else we could use to reinforce the barricade. Tables, boxes, and a coat hanger stand.
"They must've heard the gunshot." I contemplated, "I knew you shouldn't have shot him."
"Damn it." Jonathan said. "I didn't find much here either. Other survivors must've took all the weapons. I did find more ammo for your glock."
Jonathan handed me the box of ammo and two empty clips. I started to load the clips with bullets to stay sharp and prepared.
"Once you're done with that, we gotta get outta here." Jonathan commanded. "We can argue later, when we find a place where there aren't any zombies. I saw a ladder in the back room. It should lead to the roof of this shop. I'll check it out." Jonathan walks to the back room.
Looking around, I see backpacks and jackets hanging on the wall. Al even put price tags on each individual backpack, tags read "For Sale, $89.99." "No wonder you got so much merchandise, Al" I said to Al's dead corpse leaning in a chair. I put on a nice black leather jacket and grab one of the overpriced backpacks. "Sorry Al, but I need these."
(laughing coming from the backroom)
"Quit your bullshitting. We need to get outta here." Jonathan said.
(sound of glass shattering and the volume of moan and groans increase)
"Hurry up before they get in here." Jonathan climbs up the ladder.
I throw the ammunition into the backpack and put it around my shoulders, then put the clips in the front pockets of my new jacket. "Thanks again, Al."
(more glass shattering) I quickly run to the back room and start climbing the ladder. Jonathan was waiting on the rooftop while staring down at what was below us from the two story shop. I close the ladder hatch shut, just in case the zombies break through the barricade.

Then a brick is thrown to us landing about 5 yards away. The red light from the window disappears. I look at the brick and discover a piece of folded paper had been taped onto the brick. I rip off the tape, unfold the paper, and read the message.

Please excuse my late reply.
The speed for both versions are average. I'm assuming the FPS setting is low, making the animation look a bit choppy. If you want it to look more fluid, you'll have to add/draw more frames.
I don't see much of a difference between the two speed-wise. The only difference I see is that the blurred version has the Drop Shadow filter in it, which barely does any thing to affect the speed. Try using the Blur filter on the character's trails (transparent).
Hope this helps.
"We need to find a safe house, pronto." Jonathan ordered.
"None of these places will do." I answered. "We just killed 7. Well... you just killed 7." Both of us looked at the dead undead and chuckled slightly. Then Jonathan said, "let's move out then."
We started walking until we heard a low groan. We turned around and saw that one of the zombies were still alive and starting crawling towards us. I looked at Jonathan expecting him to finish the job, but then he looked at me and said "your first time firing a gun?"
"Pretty much.." I answered while taking aim at the crawling zombie. Jonathan laughs and suddenly takes the pistol from me, cocks the slide back, and hands it back to me. "Now you're good to go."
"Oh.. thanks" I said. I take aim for the head and pull the trigger. "Good job!" Jonathan reacted. "You got a Glock17 in your hands, it's semi-auto and has extended mags with 15 rounds. You got 14 rounds left, so aim carefully and fire sparingly. As for me, I got several clips left."
"Well, there's a gun shop about 8 more blocks away from here. Should be a safe spot if it hasn't been broken into already" I responded, "And we can grab more firepower and ammo for my glock."
"Roger, let's go!" he exclaimed.
We passed 5 blocks. The roads were empty, some windows to stores have been shattered and some entrances and front doors have been left wide open. We spot a zombie across the street coming out of one of a diner. An old wrinkly bald man with no arms, walking slowly with a limp and struggling to moan. He clearly begins to walk towards us and I take aim. "Save your ammo" Jonathan said. "he doesn't look like much of a threat." We started walking.
We finally reached our destination. A small rectangular building with one door and one window. Al's Gun Shop, in neon green lights above the entrance. The front door was left wide open, but the window glass was still intact. About a month ago, the shop put up a big sign with "GOLD FOR GUNS" printed on it since the government thought it would be a good idea to inflate the dollar 4 years ago. The value of the dollar was decreasing so fast that every product or service on the market was become expensive, almost not even affordable for the middle-class. Most small businesses decided to only accept gold to compensate for their expected losses, and Al's Gun Shop was one of them. Not too sure if the sign was effective for business, but it would help in keeping us hidden from zombies while we're inside.
"Al's Gun Shop. Looks decent. So what's the hold up?" Jonathan asks. "Let's go in there already before that old man zombie gets on our tail!"
The blur effect looks nice and both run cycles look good. I just think the stride needs more air time to give it a more free-runner/parkour look.
