There is a lack of lyrics in the songs submitted to the audio portal. Everyone should start adding lyrics. Don't say your microphone is too shitty either...It adds to the effect.

Whadoya say guys?

Define some genres of music Posted October 12th, 2005 in Audio

Ok, I'm not really trying to advertise my song, but I want to know what genre it should go under, because putting all of my music under Misc has its disadvantages, and I am really stumped when it comes to categorizing my tunes.
I've actually asked this before, but I don't remember, and I didn't really get a clear answer. People around me don't really know either. Thought I'd just ask in here.

It's not trance, it's not really techno, and I don't know what the bejesus Industrial is. Would it be industrial?

For the sake of saying, DO NOT VOTE OR REVIEW THIS SONG!

Well put, friend, well put.

The one thing I do agree with, is what he said about traditional music, it'd certainly be a nice evolutionary component to add to the artist's abilities, but it could easily be taken advantage of.

Indeed. Kinda how back in the day when artists of a peticular genre all of a sudden busted out a Disco album just because it was popular. Jump on the good ol' bandwagon.
But seriously, what doesn't get taken advantage of? What about the conversion from Mono to Stereo? There was probably this exact conversation going on like "BAH! two channels! Who the hell would want to have that? nothing supports it!!"......Yet. Now...who the fuck makes audio in mono?

Now, for many reasons, everything is all weird...
Now it's "Bahh! Surround Sound!? For music? Movies are different!! Seriously! Who the hell would want to listen to JUST MUSIC on only SPECIFIC DEVICES?"

There are a couple formats that have been out for the past couple of years. I'm pretty sure none of you guys have even heard of them. It's DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD (SACD).
...Anyone?

Just like CD format surpassed vinyl, cassette, and the BELOVED 8-track, MiniDisc, digital audio tape, and MP3s are trying to rid of CD format. But makes DVD-Audio and SACD so much better is that both of them have awesome multichannel sound, and you can store a grip of information. And like I said, they've been around for 2 YEARS!

It's really due all of us having little incentive to upgrade our CD collections or fuck around with new expensive players, speakers, etc.. Not only that but people havn't even heard of this shit.

The DVD-Audio discs only work in special DVD players because they have a better sound that DVD-Video audio. But it is still better than CD Quality.

Shit man, if I were a well known artist (say, Britney Spears) I'd be masturbating all day...But other than that, I'd get an aportion, but other than that, I would jsut record my music onto DVD-Video, with no video, so it would be compatible with all DVD players. GENIOUS!! Especially the aportion part...

All jokes aside...

First their was Mono, then their was stereo, and now we are in the process of going to surround sound. After surround sound we'll plug in a bike helmet to our Ipod Femto*. It'll be one big metal sheet excreeting sound waves.

* = if you didn't get that, nano is a prefix for billionth, and femto is a prefix for quadrillionth, meaning it will be small as fuck...n00b.

Yeah, not to mention the expense.

Even then, I can't really see the advantages, except for full on experimental IDM artists =).

Can't really see the advantages?! It's SURROUND sound for crying out loud, haha. What are the advantages of watching a movie on DVD over a tape? (Rhetorical question BTW)
Think about the Microphone positionings if you had multiple mics set up to record your voice. You could have one mic on the left side, one above your head or something, and then one on the left, maybe behind you..You could run around to all of them and do all these crazy things WHILE you are recording. And you could just hook all the mics into a bus (I think its a bus...I'm learning all that stuff) so it would only be one track on the console. Think of the new realms of art that would be available. And just IDM? What about other genres? Think about trance for a second: you know that drum role that everyone uses? Well, why not have it circle it around the field of listening for a fresher sound? These are all jsut examples.

I think having access to all this advanced technology is dangerous in the sense of traditional music. Artists are going to rely more on what effects they can put onto their tracks rather than actually writing a song that sounds good.

Yeah, that's so true. But then there are also the artists who ARE good songwriters who have all this technology to dispose of, right? I mean, If I were living back in the day with no computers, I would probably play guitar. I would not be producing a whole song with all these "instruments" and such on the computer. But the technology is there, and my ideas would still be aloft. Technology just makes it easier, and easy attracts more people, and more people doesn't mean better either...There's going to be alot of shit over diamonds. You can see that just in the audio portal. :)

Having 80 separate tracks of audio and panning them from 'back left' to 'front right' is all good and well, but if your song sucks, then what's the point?

Well, in the way that you express it there isn't really a point, just like shitty artists who once recorded in Mono and then starting working with 2 channel. They sucked on mono, and stereo isn't going to turn shit into a diamond...But the experimental possiblities were still there..Now they can fade the shitty vocals on one side. See what I'm saying? Technology just makes it easier, and broadens the scope of your artistic abilities to manipulate that technology, but you gotta be talented in the first place. If you can't sing, dont. Now you can mumble into the microphone and fuck with it so much that it will sound cool. or you could use a program to auto-tune your voice!

But how would you re-recreate all that when/if you (were to) go on tour? Hmmmmmmmmmm, that sucks.

The point of the inconvienence is to put it onto thousands of users rather than a bunch of mods sorting though yet flags....I guess.

I wonder, on average, how many first submissions get rejected. It seems like..not...that...many.

Everyone has their ideas on how to make the audio portal better. I havn't seen any changes. Denvish made a thread for loops for the front page. Numerous people spent tons of time creating loops, and more time reviewing them and submitting them in the thread. people have generated countless threads bitching about the audio portal....It all takes time...

its gonna take time
A whole lot of time
