Guys, I need your opinion on this matter. What would you do if I gave you a review like this for something you worked hard on? (Oh, and this review belonged to another site.)

Review Title:
Uhh... no.

Review Content:
First of all, my apologies for not liking this song at all. Downright annoying as it may be, I still would want to congratulate the artist for coming up with a trip like this.

The artist used an assortment of instruments that lacked proper mixing. Vocals were also uncured and unrefined, and the blend of instruments used were quite random. I think I heard a xylophone and trumpets.

I didn't find the lyrics funny. Different, yes, but not funny.

Is there potential in this track? For me, it's not my cup of tea.

There are hundreds of composers who can't play instruments.

...and their imaginations are wicked.

For those with less imagination, having exposure to certain instruments really helps. I haven't written a song with an instrument I haven't held yet (piano/keyboards, guitar, bass, drums), although I imagine some of my to-be-recorded songs to have saxophones and strings.

Exposure doesn't have to be hands-on, but must be first-hand (i.e. actual watching/hearing experience).

True, but there are a MILLION or so excuses (or reasons, rather, haha) to use MIDI/synth/sequencers. My excuse would be "I'm an ocean away from any band I know, and I want to record my music now." Sure, playing the real stuff would be tons better, but I don't want to pay for equipment shipping and band member accomodations.

Again, do not put the synth guys down. No matter how cooler it is to play the real stuff, WE MAKE SONGS, and synths are a great way of getting our songs RECORDED and HEARD.

So you may say, "it's not fair." I say, "it's hella convenient."

There are a few that I like that don't have a "real" guitar, but bust their asses to make it as real as possible. You are one. Lashmush is the other.

Maybe the material you're coming up with right now isn't exciting. If I come with a composition that is interesting, I don't waste my time -- I always do something to make the project progress.

If I get bored in the middle of it, then it's not interesting. (Well, at least that's how it is for me. I also have a short attention span, and I need something extra special for me to finish a recording.)

If it's an off-day, give it a rest. If you don't remember it the following day, then it's something boring (or at least boring for you). ^_^

...but if it's really kick-ass, it'll play around your head until the next time you record.

I have an EMU 0404 USB - it works fantasticly and it's about $200. Theres also the 0202 USB which has less inputs and stuff, you might like that if all you're looking for is a playback sound card.

Aight! I'll look that up when I visit a mall today. Thanks!

I'm also looking for a replacement vocal microphone. The Beta908 tends to sound thin.

Any recommendations? Right now, I'm looking into Shure SM58 and Sennheiser e945. Thanks in advance! ^_^

Sad

Topic: What Did You Learn Today? Thread

Posted: 12/05/07 12:01 PM

I learned that my ten dollar mic sucks since it sounds thin. The sad part is that EQ'ing isn't a magic cure for cheap microphones, as it: a. cannot simulate a clean bass input, and b. cannot cure the "tin can" sound.

I also learned that I should allocate a budget for a better mic, and once I've gotten it, I have to re-record all my vocal tracks EXCEPT backing vocal pieces (the cheap mic may sound better in this case).

I compared a vocal tracks from a recording session ages ago with one that I did now. The difference is a mile. (The price difference between the microphones is 20 times.)

This sucks...

I still prefer "John", though, hehe.

Well, methinks Trillianes is being a junior Gringo. Honasan also did that during the late 80's Aquino administration.

I suspect that the Peninsula thing is a go-for-coup signal. I don't think Trillianes was able to gather as many supporters necessary to pull off a coup.

Saw what the army did to the Peninsula. Frankly, they sucked. The formations were pathetic (they were like compressed together in groups of... twenty? If you really, really, REALLY want to be a poet,
try writing about anything and everything.
No need to be loud, or excessively quiet,
for as long as this gives you a set of wings.

But do not just write for yourself,
since many others would want to see.
I'm pretty sure you don't want it on a shelf
aging in dust, and away from the tea.

It is important, therefore, and it is a must
that you catch their attention in the blink of an eye.
Any less, and your work will be just
another one granule of sand 'neath the sky.

Hence, my advice -- converse with us like friends
for poetry should talk with colorful blends.

Just replace your jack/wire; you should be fine... unless you have a bigger problem.

Bigger problems include:
- hum from guitar (poor/defective/damaged grounding)
- hum from soundcard (haven't experienced this, though)
- hum from effects pad/pedals

Aside from rolls (maki and temaki), there are also meals that have sushi (or sashimi, to be specific) as rice toppings. ^_^

My favorite would be tuna and pink salmon sashimi. There's also the California Maki that's popular here in the Philippines. The common variant consists of crabstick, ripe yellow mango, and cucumber wrapped in sushi rice and nori (seaweed), then rolled in a yellow-orange caviar and topped with Japanese mayonnaise. Mmm...
