I honestly think that popular reviews outside of Newgrounds are terrible too. Metacritic is a good way to see this. I was reading the review of The Matrix from the San Francisco Chronicle, who said "It's astonishing that so much money, talent, technical expertise and visual imagination can be put in the service of something so stupid." Then when the second movie came out, they said, "Turns out the first 'Matrix' was the One, but the second is still loads of fun."

Funny how they swing their opinion in light of their difference in scores: a 25 for the Matrix and a 75 for the Matrix Reloaded. We obviously know that is not how the cookie crumbled for that series.

Weakness
I'm really bad at math. I failed Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry in high school. I had Graves disease throughout high school so I had it bad for about three years, and missed a lot of that math. Flash programming has allowed me to go back and learn a lot of it though, but I still feel behind.

Saving Money
If it's hard to save money Luis has the right idea. I used to spend money easily, mostly on eating out. So I opened a bank account that saves out 5% every month, and that's been working out. I also set up my credit card so that it rounds off the change and dumps it into the savings account (for example, I spend $2.75 and it puts a quarter into savings).

Topic: ibpro V32 score submissions system?

Posted: 05/09/08 10:32 AM

Forum: Flash

The flash file actually has to be programmed to handle working with a score submission system. There are several websites and communities that feature some games pre-programmed to help you get started. I'm not sure specifically have ibpro v32 works, but most likely all you have to do is upload the file to your server, and then go to your admin CP and add the game there.

I was addressing the issue of parents who have stigmas about video games, not hating my job (I love my job).

Whenever someone asks my mom what I do for a living she tells people I am an animator, and she has done it in front of me several times. For some unknown reason video games were deemed bad in my household. We had an intellivision and a Nintendo, and both consoles were constantly collecting dust because I was basically never allowed to touch them. I was slapped with 30 minute time limits to play any computer, console or anything. I used to wake up at 3 am in the morning so that I could squeeze a few extra minutes into my day to play the Nintendo.

Am I the only one here who has a parent who is ashamed of what I do for a living so they tell people I am trying to get a job at Pixar? Video game stigmas are so sticky these days.

User Interface
Anyone ever picky about keyboards or mice?

I refuse to order a keyboard and mouse online. I need to go to the store and play with every single one. I usually will be at the store for about an hour, exploring each of my different options. The keyboard needs to have a number pad, function keys that are equal to/larger than normal keys, home and end buttons next to each other (not stacked), a large backspace button, and music/sound controls that at least mute/unmute the music.

When it comes to mice, I need to scroll the wheel. Frankly I'll take any mouse, laser, optical, or mouseball. But it sure as hell should have the nicest scroll wheel. I am also not a fan of scroll wheels that go left or right as well.

Archival Footage
I spend some of my time visiting the archive.org to view clips from television and popular media back in the mid 20th century. I recently stumbled upon one of the best televison toy commercials I have ever seen.

Topic: cs3 not redrawing outside stage

Posted: 05/05/08 02:08 PM

Forum: Flash

Why do you need Flash to redraw outside the stage area? Flash tends to redraw only what is in the visible stage area, within the confines of the height/width area. The reason it does this is to prevent dealing with drawing objects that are not visible on the screen... saves CPU.

Kotaku
Odd. I submitted your Bread busting game to both Kotaku and Joystiq the day it came out pointing to Newgrounds. Sadly it must have been overlooked... and is now a few weeks late.

Newgrounds Morale
I think a lot of it has to do with the holidays and special events that get people excited and then keep their happiness up. Rolling out tank trophies right after Pico day is causing some users to explode.

Otherwise, yeah, the forums have been good, there hasn't been any e-drama as of late ... maybe it's this springtime weather or something.

Most sprites tend to fly under the radar but I would definitely consider doing your own art. The thin line gets crossed once money becomes involved.

Beyond that, the work IS copyrighted and trademarked to their respective owners, so you need to make that moral judgement as well.
