Come on people, you really think anyone is going ot let a series that's only gaining popularity just die off? I doubt it. It's more likely that myname wants a little break so he's doing something different. He did want a break after the last one (SoR) remember? But we all pushed him to do SoB quicker.

Of course, the only real way to be sure would be for him to COME FORWARD AND SAY SOMETHING ALREADY!!! HELLO??? =)

Yep, only the main submitter can reply to reviews. Oh well. Overall they seem pretty good, just some jerks here and there saying we suck =)
I'm looking forward to doing this again, if there's another 5 Shades Collab, which I assume there will be sometime in the future. It gives me a chance to do something different everytime. I guess I could just do something different on my own, but without a deadline staring down at me it's hard to finish anything as artistic as these toons come out.

Well I too am glad most people seemed to like mine. It was one of the prettier cartoons I've done, because I put a lot more time into it than normal. Usually I have very limited animation and use the humor to carry it though. Now though, after doing this one, I'm not sure I can go back to less animation! That mean my weekly Fred updates have just gotten harder.

Geez, thanks alot you guys- now I have more work to do!! :P

Seriously though, just this one collab has pushed me to make better and better flash toons, so thanks to everyone for the support, to myname for bringing it all together, and to Zekey, Greedom, and ReNaeNae for making such awsome things that I tried extra hard to do as well as you this time around =)

BAM! I think I will.

I gotta say, good job everyone! These all seemed very well done, and looks like a lot of work went into them. So here's my votes:

#1 and my choice for best of show is ZekeySpaceyLizard!
Wow. I mean, wow, what the heck? I don't know how you did half of those effects but it was quite cool. Only part I didn't like was the guy tweening off the boat (that wasn't as well done as the rest). Oh well, as a whole it was awsome!

Next up, Greedom!
Very nice Fbf stuff man! It was a really cool idea/story too. And nifty slogan. All in all quite good. It's a shame they fought and no one ended up with water or their lives... sigh isn't that just the way it goes at the end of the world?

Then we've got djamin!
This piece was really well animated, and I liked it. It was a little strange, but hey, they all were. Nice job.

And finally Xionic_demon!
This needed some more water if you ask me, but it was very well done otherwise so I couldn't pass it up. The end was sad... sorry you had to go through that.

Well that's it for me and my choices. I'd also like to mention that I was a little dissapointed in how many entries used copyrighted songs. I guess that's the way it goes, but I hate to see people do such great animations and then never be able to actually use them for anything final or proffesional. If you tried to, you'd get sued just because someone owns the music. Anyway, just something to keep in mind for next time, cause there's lots of great melodies out there from people who allow you to use their music for free.

Again, great work everybody! It was hard to make the choices between them all!

Before the Shades of Blue will be submitted, all those who created and submitted an entry must watch each animation in order to vote on who gets co-author/included. For Shades of Red we each got 4 votes (not being able to vote for ourselves or mynamewontfitin) and the top folks got co-author, plus the two runner ups got in because there was room (oh and a really cool easter egg).

I imagine myname will let us know shortly, but until the voting takes place there won't be a submission to the Portal. Keep your eyes on this thread I guess!

Back on topic... who has submitted a flash for the collab? Please add a link too! Lets get list together!

Ho ho! Sounds like a challenge to me! Maybe I'll just have to see what I can do about a making a claymation with non-blob characters, eh? On the other hand, I do have lots of real work to do and I remember claymation from when I was younger. It takes a year and a half to make two seconds. So yes, your right, but I think it would be cool to have some fancy clay character animations on NG. One day... one day.......

And I submitted a flash for the collab! But I don't have a link because the final isn't up on FredtheMonkey.com until next week. I guess we'll just have to wait for Myname to post them all for the vote.

well... it's a bit of a rip off. Anyways i gave you a 3. Does anyone know when 5sob is going to be submitted?
Please reply.

I would imagine that the final will be up a day or two after we vote on which ones get in, which will happen when Myname jams them all together and presents a link on this BBS. So, myname, when will that be, hmmmmmm? =)

And Twinsen, I don't think everyone hates it. I mean, 2.39 is just an average score. It's almost half of 5 which means it's just average. Some people may have voted low because it's a claymation and NG is mainly for Flash, and some people probably though it looked too much like that other popular clay series. The computer I was on didn't have sound, so I'll have to watch it again later and vote. The visuals seemed fine, but maybe you should make the people more detailed. Seems like everyone just makes claymation with lump people that have no features. Sure it's easier, but it doesn't really stand out. Keep at it though. Oh yeah, and the part with the TV you can see your shadow in the glass. Just so you know.

Yeah, two years ago Homestarrunner was the reason I decided to take my long time running comic series into Flash and animate them. Well it never hurts to use extra time to polish up what you've got. You may not want to extend it, but you can always find places where a little more work will take it to the next level, so I say go for it.

As for seeing what I've got, I have a tendency to really be against showing my work in its pre-finished forms. It probably dates back to the old N64 days when Nintendo would show something cool and then delay it for years until they got it right. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up if something doesn't work out! Still I understand where you're coming from, so maybe I'll resave the file, delete a few (few=lot) of frames, and at least let you preview the first half that's more or less done. How about that? On another note, I'm glad everyone agrees with the idea to put the best entry first! Go Shades of Blue!
I think next time I'll make a sig like everybody else =)

Response to: 5 Shades of Blue Collab! Posted April 17th, 2005 in Game Development

Hooray for slipped deadlines!

I could have spent all day today on the cartoon and finished it fine, but now that we have a week it should give me time to work out any of the little "uglies" I guess I would call them. Thanks, Myname. And sorry everyone who's responsible and did theirs on time =) (though I really WOULD have gotten it done...)

Anyway, I was also wondering if the toons would be featured in order of super-coolness and well-done-ivity (two real words that actually exist. I'm not making them up...) I ask because I figure the SoB entry will get a higher score if the best of the best are featured where the people with low attention spans will see them at the begining. I know there's a menu and all that, but some folks don't really go deep into the cartoons before they vote (sad but true.)
So anyway, I think whoevers is the greatest should get voted to be displayed at menu start.

What do you all think? If I'm wrong just smack me and tell me to shut it. =)

If there isn't an extension, I might have to just submit mine at that length with some music or something.

It looks pretty good. Too bad you don't have more time, because the puddle a the bottom could use a little work. Nice FbF though, and the 3D at the begining (the box thing) is very cool. Have fun in Orlando!

I decided to cut mine very short of it's original storyboards. I'd rather have a shorter and polished piece than a longer, crappier one. I hope it turns out ok! Does anyone else's have voices and such? It seems like most people are just using music. I wish I had some music to fit mine, but looks like voices will have to do. How's everyone else doing?

I agree that you should finish Darx, because even if it's not the best it's still nice to see what everyone does with the colors/theme. If not though, try for next time (which I hope will have a break in between before it starts this time!)

And Astropuff, I don't think there'll be a problem filling up the spots. It's just a different style, that's all. It's also much much easier to animate when there are less joints in the arms (or no arms in general). I kinda like the effect, but only if the rest is very well done. It's very easy to get sloppy when there aren't physical limbs holding a character together. Anyway, just thought I'd add my two cents so you didn't get the feeling everyone dislikes that style =)
I'm done animating for the day, and at roughly 20% total done, things are looking up. But not me, because if I look up I see the sun and it blinds me so. Terrible terrible light...

One thing (if you had time) to work on would be when the shark gets up from the sand. It's too stiff compared to the rest.

I've worked all day on mine and it's turning out ok. Still have tons of work to do, and suddenly that whole "Oh right THIS is why I don't wait until a week before it's due" thought has come around once again. Oh well, I still think I can manage to get it done! I hope anyway.

I am currently finally buckling down and animating. I'll have it done by Friday. (At least, I better, because I'm using my SoB entry also as my update for FredtheMonkey.com this week!) So far so good, but I'm definately going to cut back from my original plans. Much much back. Now I'm not sure how to end it anymore, so sadly it won't ever live up to all the glory I see in my head that it could be if only I had a team of animators working night and day and obeying my every command for fear of the terrible beating that would ensue should they fail.

When?? When will I get my squad of animating slaves?! Sigh...
