Despite my best efforts, it is a whopping 1.3 megabytes as an swf.
If you decide not too include it because of its size, I'll understand.
Yow! That's quite a chunky file you've got there! But eh, I bet it's so high quality and so good that we'll have no choice but to include it =)
Seriously, I doubt anyone will say "Hey let's put in three crappy ones instead of Zekey's brilliant piece." Right?
Mine is not coming along well. I got halfway and now have reached a point where I'm not sure where to go. Wish me luck, I don't want to drop out at the last minute...

I am just curious, and too lazy to loo kthrough al lthe pages to find out... but about how long should each piece be? Approx, what would be the range we should be in for length. So one doesnt overpower another, and of course to make sure we dont overuse our alloted space (both size and length)... is there a secific size limit as well i should know about?
There is no specific file size or length. Obviously the smaller you can keep the file the better, since Flash is all about small file sizes and quick loading. The length should be as long as you need to make a good piece. If you can do it in 10 seconds, more power to you, if it takes you a minute, well there you go. Just don't go crazy and make a 10 minute long epic film. This is about giving a lot of folks a shot to get in, not just one or two people.
I've decided to put my piece aside and wait until the last minute like usual.

Tell me Tell me!! I worked real hard on it so far and it's probably a little more than half done now. I want to hear what everyone says! :)
It's a good start. I like the bear/dog thing's movement as he's walking. Perhaps add some detail in the background or the grass to define it more. Also maybe work on the mouth while he's chewing the mushroom. Keep at it!
At 6/6/05 01:09 AM, NutjobM wrote: DANG this is a whole lot harder than it looks... ah well, hope I make the deadline...
What's harder? Meeting the deadline or working in only 5 colors? I can relate to both, but I can also tell you that the more you do it the easier it gets. The color thing, not so much the deadlines =)
More good luck to everybody working on this! I'm a good ways in on mine but have run into some artist block (like writer's block, but prettier).
Geez, it's June already? Wow.
Anyway, sorry people but looks like I won't have anything for this collab this time around. I know I haven't posted in a while. Been very busy. Let me know if you decide to do another after this, because I think the Red White and Blue thing just kinda turned me off from the start. If there are other colors next time I'll probably join right in.
Good luck to everyone finishing up! I hope you guys make front page this time around!
Where doust thou, "Shades of" support?? It seems 5 Shades of Brown isn't getting as many posts as previous. Why, good sir knight? My guess is a little thing called "Finals."
Anyway, I'm showing my support with my new sig. What'chall think?

o yea btw, did anyone ever look at what i have so far? or comment on it? because if they did i missed it...
A few comments from me to you. I like what you have so far, and I'm sure it will be even better with sound effects and/or music. A few suggestions I have are a) I don't get the random fade out in the later half. It seems misplaced. b)Work on the squirrel going into the bushes, because he just kind of dissapears right now. Maybe a few leaves flying when he enters c) The mouse at the end of the clip was very well done, perhaps you should expand it further. Maybe have him cowering in the hole or something while things rumble around him.
Just some thoughts. Good luck and have fun in Alaska!

It's a little too choppy. You've got an okay start but you need to smooth it out a bit. Also the tree's trunk is a little too thick, perhaps thin it out and add some branches. Maybe a few clouds would help too. It's coming along though, so keep at it.

Hah, I'll keep that in mind. Was it just peanut butter or did it include jelly? And will Mr. P. B. Can be the future star of your animation? It could be interesting...

That was quick. Well if you change your mind again feel free to do something for the collab.
Zekey that's a cool screenshot. I like the background, it's crazy. Looks to be a very fast paced and odd cartoon!
Mine is coming along okay, but still in early stages. I have the story idea down but there's a lot more work to be done. I'm kind of torn because on the one hand I want it to be good, but on the other hand I don't care as much like I did for SoB. I just don't want it to take over my life like that cartoon did, I spent forever on it. So we'll see I guess!

Yeah yeah, post a screenshot. I think I'll do it too. Witness the... squirrel thing...

Have no fear, I'm sure lots of people are doing things. From past experience, the closer the deadline is the more hits this thread gets. Just keep working at it; there's no doubt in my mind there will be enough people and entries to fill all the spots!
At 5/26/05 01:56 AM, Greedom wrote: Good idea, Space_Chicken. Also, I think we should submit a preview pic with our entry like we did in the 5SOR collab, we forgot to in the blue one.
I agree. It's a nice feature when you want to go back and watch one you've already seen, but can't recall who did it. We just need to know what size to make the preview (and it can be animated right?)
At 5/26/05 06:56 AM, temariix wrote: mine isnt going to be that long i dont think once i am done... is that ok since everyone else's seems to be long?
Oh yeah, that's perfectly fine. If you can get your point across quicker, by all means make it whatever length you want. One of my favorite pieces was the easter egg in SoR. It was all of, what, three seconds long? But it was beautifully done. I wouldn't make it quite that short though... Good luck!
At 5/25/05 04:11 PM, mynamewontfitin wrote: I just finished recording the song for mine. It happened to come out to be 1 minute long exactly so thats how long my movie will be. I probably wont finish any time soon though cuz of finals etc....uggh.
Good luck with finals. I remember how horrible they always were, but hey, afterwards is vacation time so it's something I guess.
One thought I had while reading the last few posts. Since it seems the entries are getting longer as the collabs go forward, maybe in the main menu along with the author names there could be a length of movie given. Just an idea.
Sorry if any of this post makes little sense; it's quite late and I'm quite tired. Now I sleep.

I'm not sure that counts as nature, but the thing about the word nature is that it's pretty wide open depending on how you look at it. I can tell you that some people wouldn't consider a fight nature, but hey, if you set it in the forest or something maybe it'll get you extra points with those folks.

I like it. Good start. Your typography in the begining is very nice. It builds up to expecting a well done piece. I hope it goes well!
At 5/24/05 06:33 PM, Astropuff wrote: Is there a restriction on time-length for movies as long as they aren't too big of a file size?
In the past there have not been restrictions, per say. Obviously we want to streamline this collab as much as possible so everyone can enjoy it regardless of internet connection speed. People have thrown out numbers like 30-40 seconds, and keep a file size to a minimum. Personally, I think you should make it the best you can and if it ends up 3 minutes long and several megs, well, if it's good enough I believe it'll get voted in. Just do your best and try your hardest to optimize everything to be the smallest you can.
I'm starting to think that maybe, just maybe, I might join in here anyway. I don't think I'll shoot for first place like I did last time (darn you Zeeeeekeeeeeeeey!!! =) but maybe I'll put together a solid piece if I think it'll help boost this entry of the Shades Of collabs higher than the past ones. We'll still have to see I guess! (It's not like I can pass by without hanging out in this thread anyway!)

I unfortunately don't think I can make it with less stupid people =)
I think people like forums because they allow opinions to be traded, and let you talk to other people about things you may have in common.
What does everyone think of user ignore features? I've been hearing a lot about that recently.

Plus, it's just the start. Further down the road more people will have more things to show. Give it some time.
Also, if less people DO decide to enter, everyone will have to work even harder to make the final collab better than the last three. So get crackin! =)

Please comment on shading mainly. As in, while you all accept it?
While you all accept it? What the biscuit does that mean? I'll assume it means WILL you all accept it.
I don't really see much shading going on. If I jam my face up next to the screen I sort of see different shades, but if you want it to be more apparent that it's shaded you should use higher contrasting colors. The darks should be darker. Just an idea.
And as for making juice, what kind of juice are we talking about here? Cause if it's Mango juice I might be in. If it's, say, orange though, well, sorry but you'll just have to find someone else. =)

Meh, it's not so much I don't LIKE the music, but I'm a big fan of non-copyrighted tunes. That way when the piece is finished you can truly call it "your own." Unless that's you singing in the back, and then I say go for it. Again, you don't HAVE to use original music, but consider that somewhere down the road if you want to include the piece in a DVD collection of your work or something, you may have a hard time getting permission. Just a thought!
And I personally like the crappy rabbit. =)

Sounds good, I think you're right about having it mainly text based, since that is the whole point of a forum. =)
I'm still a little new to this though, so what do you mean by asshats?
Thanks for the input everybody! This is very very helpful. I probably would have made the background light and the text dark without this help! And I'll be sure to make the picture uploads limited to not screw everything up.
Hey everybody!
I'm traveling around the ol' message boards doing some quick market research to see what people prefer in a forum. If you would take a second and tell me the features you all think are must-haves when it comes to a good forum, I'd appriciate it! Any ideas or tips are helpful, I'm trying to make something really great for the upcoming Cubetoons website. Thanks!
Brown eh? Interesting. Well... you never know I guess, but at this point in time I may not be in for this one. Perhaps inspiration will strike at some point, but right now Shades of Brown doesn't really shout out anything to me. I guess I was never a big fan of brown. Oh well.
Good luck to everyone who IS saying they're in, I hope you all follow up with it and do something GREAT!

I am so inclined to agree with you there Greedom! When you put it that way, yep, it does make more sense that the theme is set already before the actual debut of ye old rules. I guess I'm just a little envious of those who seem to have some inside info on theme/color and get a head start. With an option it leaves them a little more in the dark until the rest of us hear about the theme and color! Oh well, that's life I suppose.
