Yeah. That seemed next to impossible in swift 3D...
But how do you make your maya animation into a fla?

So wait, you couldn't do something like that in Swift? Why not? Seems like it might take longer or something, but no impossible. Of course, I don't know it well yet, or know Maya at all so I guess I shouldn't talk, eh?

I think the guy stands out okay. One thing you could try is making the backgrounds a little less thickly-lined in black. That way your main character will stand out more.

On another note, do you use Swift 3D Twinsen? I assume so, but I don't know for sure. If you do can you point me in any directions for good tutorials on the program? I'm trying to learn it myself, but it's so freakin' complicated compared to what I'm used to... Or if anyone knows any good sites for that, feel free to share! Thanks.

I wish I could help you, but I don't know how to draw ships and machines very well. Sorry. The only thing I can say is that it is pretty dark all over, so you could try adding a few highlights. Also additional lines help to give a more industrial feel, especially if they're thin and look like seams. Know what I mean? I think at this point the ships are great, it'll be all about how you animate them.

My SoP is not coming along at all. I've got the idea and everything down, but haven't worked on it yet. Not that that is unusual, I always wait until the end anyway, I just thought this time might be different. =)

Anyway, the big thing is that you try. And what is really great is how much time you have. If you work hard to KEEP improving (and not just make something and leave it alone) you can make something tons better than anyone else. You just have to commit to it. With a month before it's due, there is plenty of time if you dedicate youself. Good luck!
Also it really does help to post here when you've got something. Then people with a little more experience (like Greedom for example) can help you to make your work even better!

No, not at all. Anyone can make an entry as long as you get it in before the due date (currently November 4th at Midnight). The best ones will make it into the collab! So come one and all and try out! It doesn't even matter if you start 48 hours before it is due! Heck, that's what I've done for the past THREE of these, hee hee.

I only wish I could have done Shades of Green back in the day. Then I could be in every one from the start. Sigh...

I started the script for my SoP today. I can't figure out what to keep and what to cut, because if I include it all then mine alone will be uber long... Guess I'll just trust my humor instincts.

A few suggestions: Because the due date is still so far off you have the really great oppertunity to make the animation even better. Keep at it! Also I think you need to slow down the ending, it flashes the text about the moon being ice cream way too fast. Good luck, and post a link if you do change something!

At 9/27/05 02:52 PM, Prellz wrote: I want to get all 3. Any body know the prices yet?

The Xbox 360 will retail for $399 in the US. Currently it is the only next-gen system that has a price. Rumors speculate that the PS3 will be extremely expensive (according to comments from Sony executives) and the Revolution from Nintendo will be less money than the others.

There is also a "Core" system for the 360 for 299, but it is retarded compared to the actual unit at 399 so don't even bother with it. You'd need to purchase almost $100 in accesorries just to play games on it in the same way as the 399 system.

Considering that it is still unclear as to whether or not Sony is lying about the current screens of the PS3 being real-hardware-produced or not, (They have in the past) I will reserve judgement until the actual system is playable. Though personally I don't care much about the power of a system, and am looking forward to the new innovations of the Nintendo Revolution at the moment.

Thanks again for the help!

Subtitles in Flash toons Posted August 1st, 2005 in Game Development

Hey everyone,

Two things. One: I was wondering people's thoughts on Flash Cartoons having subtitles. I know there are many out there that do, some that don't, and some that SHOULD since you can't understand a word they say.

And as a follow up, unless everyone says they hate them, I'm going to start adding subtitles to my cartoons and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how I would actionscript a button at the bottom to turn them on and off.

Thanks!

Maybe make a better animation next time with more story like all the "shoe-in's" did?

I agree with you both. On the one hand, it's tough for animators with less experience to make it to co-author spot with the "Shades of" collabs. Mainly because some people have been doing them from the start and have gotten quite good at it from experience alone.
BUT at the same time, I think it's a good thing. I personally got a lot of votes, but I know that every time I do the next version of this collab I try THAT much harder just so I can beat... certain people... I won't name any zNeAkMeEyS. Anyway, that sense of competition is what keeps the cartoons always becoming better.
So do what I do and as soon as you get word of the next Shades Of collab, start it anew and put your best foot forward.

And if you really want to be like me then forget about it after the first week or so and come back when it's due in 12 hours and work like a madman. =)

Aha, very very nice Myname. It looks quite professional.

As for the votin, here we go!
DNR!: Wow man, I gotta say, that animation blew me away! (Hey that kinda rhymes) Anyway, great work, it gets my "best of show."
Oobar!: This was a funny little toon, and I am very big on the comedy ones. I really like your style, especially the guy with the remote. Nice work.
Greedom!: Very deep. I like the art style and the effects were cool. Maybe too deep for my tastes, but the quality can't be ignored.
And finally
Zekey!: I didn't mind that it wasn't an emotional cartoon like some of your others, I liked it. It wasn't as good as your Shades of Red in my opinion, but that's probably because I loved that wacky little alien character in your SoR cartoon so much. Nice job though!

Really, good work to everyone who submitted! I think these were some of the best submissions I've seen in a while. I hope a lot of people can get squeezed in even if there's only a few co-authors!
And Myname, did you get your Flash working ok?

Yikes, that's no good. Well you should try taking it to another person's computer and see if it works. Also, did you try sending/uploading other files? Just to check if it's that one file that's a problem or your whole computer. Just an idea.

MYNAMEWONTFITIN!! I may have a solution for you. Maybe. It depends. Don't get your hopes up too high. =)

Here's the deal: I tried to isolate the problem with your file by chopping it up into tiny little pieces to see where exactly the problem was. The tiny pieces all worked. Wacky, eh?
Anyway, I then began to reassemble your whole Flash and got it to four nicely even sized chunks (again, all that work fine). Then I tried making two nice chunks and bam, the crashing came running back at me. So apparently your file does not play well with others. (Others being, you know, itself.) Anyhow, I now have your file that can be published but in four pieces. SO depending on how much effort you want to put into it (and I say go for it, the animation is awsome) you could technically (I think) call the files externally and everything will work out and flow together. Again this is a theory, but isn't that what you did with Twinsen's huge files in the past? Just have them load in the background and play one after another. Possible? Anyone?

Let me know what you think, and I'll keep trying to work on the problem further. (Oh and sorry for all the stuff in parentheses.)

I've had such things occur. Two things may result:
A) You may have to uninstall and then re-install Flash. This has fixed many, many problems for me, though it takes a long time and I hate to do it.
B) The file may be damaged beyond help and (if you don't have an older backup) all work is kaput. You can TRY copying all the frames from the broken file and pasting them in a new one and save it as something different, but that may not work if the problem is in the frames themselves. Could be actionscript related too, I imagine.

Good luck with it, I hope you can save all the work you've done! I want to see that catipillar tank or whatever the biscuit it is! =)

One thing to try is going back into your Flash file and optimizing some things as well as bringing any large imports (music, images) down in size. Then resave the file as another name (otherwise it'll still be just as large) and see if that makes it under your file size limits. Good luck!
