Yeah, Greedom! Get movin'! =)

And what is up with you people and the arm breakings? Geez... I'm certainly never taking over this collab. Everyone who's led it has broken limbs.

So Twinsen, or Orb, (what do you want called?) I had an idea.
If you did want to delay the due date one final time (personally I should be ready for this Friday though) then that would put us right in the neighborhood of January 19th, 2006. You know what that is, right? The one year anniversary of the "Shades of" series!
So what do you think? Wouldn't it be cool to have Shades of Purple debut in the portal exactly a year after Shades of Green?

Just a thought. Back to work for me.

Response to: 5 Shades of Purple Collab! Posted January 2nd, 2006 in Game Development

Ooo, interesting shot there, jorncar. I'm very curious as to see what it's all about.

I worked late into the night and now have about a minute and a half (still without sound) of the cartoon I'm doing. I'm not sure how funny it will be compared to others I've done. Some of the humor is less "laugh out loud" funny, but hopefully people will still like it.

Looks like my entry may also come in at just about 2 minutes. =)

Response to: 5 Shades of Purple Collab! Posted January 1st, 2006 in Game Development

Wow, that looks increddible, myname!
Man, the shading is far beyond anything I think I could ever do... Very cool.
So you're at 5 seconds, huh? How long are you shooting for the whole thing to be? I didn't know you did the music for your SoG one. I wish I had your musical talent.

I just hit the 50 second mark on mine, but so far it has no sound. So there's still a long way to go. Now I'm not sure what to do, though, because I can either end mine in another 10 seconds, or go on for another probably 40 and finish the original idea I had. Basically it will most likely boil down to "Do I have enough time to finish?"
=)

Response to: 5 Shades of Purple Collab! Posted January 1st, 2006 in Game Development

Man! I am SO excited about this collab again!
My toon is coming along nicely and it seems like everytime I make a "Shades of" entry it hits me just how much I've improved at animation since the last one. This cartoon is shaping up to be my best yet! Well, one of my best. Maybe.
It should be all done by this Friday. I'll be working all this week on it.

ANYWAY, I promised a preview so here's a peak:

Response to: 5 Shades of Purple Collab! Posted December 31st, 2005 in Game Development

Ohhhhh okay. I think I get it now. I went back and read some posts I missed.

So TwinsenDude who is now -orb- has taken over the Shades of Purple lead from mynamewontfitin, and he is on holiday so the new due date is 1 week from now.

Is that right?

That would be good since I'm still working on mine. And it seems like a few other people are also still working. I'd post a preview of what I'm doing but I'm not at my computer at the moment, so it will have to wait. But soon I'll try and at least post an image.
Good luck to everyone (like me) still working on their toons!
Oh yeah, and HAPPY NEW YEAR to the whole "Shades Of" bunch!

Response to: 5 Shades of Purple Collab! Posted December 30th, 2005 in Game Development

Um, yeah, so no one ever replied... Huh...

Okay so here's my story:
I'm not done. Yeah, I know I've known about this for several months, but I never really figured out the final due date and the holidays took up a lot of my time.

So any chance of an extention? Otherwise my cartoon will probably be very short with little sound... Blah.
PLEASE SOMEONE RESPOND! DON'T MAKE ME E-MAIL YOU ALL SEPERATELY! =)

Response to: 5 Shades of Purple Collab! Posted December 28th, 2005 in Game Development

Hey everyone!

Long time no see! Sorry I haven't been around here much, I'm working on the debut of my second website (Cubetoons.com!) and busy with FredtheMonkey.com things as well.

But I really would still like to contribute to the SoP collab here! I'm working on an all new cartoon now. Much different than my original idea, and I just hope I can finish in time! It will probably be about 1 minute long or so.

The deadline is still December 31st? Yes?
Or was it moved back a bit?
Anyway, whoever knows the answer, let me know!
Good luck everyone!
(Remember, it's never to late to join as long as you meet the deadline!)

I agree, 3d animation is way under-rated here on Newgrounds, I envy 3d artists- like Twinsen or stem, sometimes their talent goes un-noticed.

I'm not saying 3D isn't hard (I know it is, I've tried) or that it isn't worthwhile or anything like that. I was merely stating that for those people who DON'T work in 3D, it isn't very fair to compare what they do to stuff done in Maya or something, because Flash just can't do that. 3D is SO impressive, that it might take away votes from a deserving Flash animation that could NEVER be as impressive as what you did in 3D because such a thing is impossible (the 3D I mean) in Flash. You see?

Anyway, there are clay and video presentations on NGs a lot too, so it isn't just about Flash anymore I guess.

Well for the monthly voting thing it's really about Flash animation, not other types. It's kind of difficult for Flash animation to compare with what you did. So there needs to be a level playing field. Anyway, it's really nice 3D.

So I've got good news and bad news.
The bad news is that I've decided to take my idea for Shades of Purple and turn it into a full-color animated short. It got too big with a very large script and I don't want to take up half of the allotted file size space for the whole collab submission. Also in the bad news department is that I now have no idea what I'm going to do for this collab.
On the good side, I'm still in and plan to do SOMETHING. But it probably won't be as high-level as my original idea. (Which I guess should have gone under "Bad news" but oh well.)

My menu (including the "Do you want Subtitles" button) is in the first scene with the preloader. But the subtitles and main movie are in other scenes. How do I get the button to react to the objects (subtitles) in the other scenes?

I tried to just use the above code and code from the other links, but it isn't working.
Any further suggestions? Thanks.

Yep, plenty of time.
Regarding the 5 Artist/1MB thing, I really think we should include more if there are multiple quality entries. I loved how there were runner-ups in the Shades of Red and such, and Shades of Green had several pages of people's work! I'm not saying it should be that many, but seems like limiting it to just 5 is too low if there are some other really nice entries done that don't get the highest votes.
Though I guess as everyone makes bigger and better things, the file space quickly disappears...

I dunno, I guess I'll be pretty busy come December (with holidays and all) but if I can't get the cartoon done in TWO MONTHS then there's something seriously wrong and delaying to January won't help much. So I vote, sure, go ahead and make it mid-December, but please give us an exact date ASAP. Only because I know I'll be motivated differently if Mid-december = December 10th, vs. if it = December 20th, you know?

Oh and Snare, don't stop animating! It looks like you've got a real knack for it! Like Xion said, you just need some inspiration. Seems a shame to just give it up. You can take a break, but why not keep your eyes peeled for something you might want to put into a cartoon? You never know when a great idea will pop up! Good luck!

Lookin' good! Great really.
One thing I might suggest. If you keep the subtitles, it would probably add a bit more drama if you broke up at least the first line. Do it in smaller chunks, you know what I mean?
"My name is..."
then "I'm a ninja..."
then a pause and "At least I used to be..."
It adds suspense which seems to be the direction your heading. So far it's looking awesome. I'd better get to work if I'm going to keep up! =)
Good luck!

Nice! It's certainly coming along well. I was going to say "Work on the walking guy" but I see you beat me to it. =)
I think the music is very appropriate, and overall it is looking good. One thing you might want to try is adding some more shadows while the scene is getting darker, because it looks right now like the same image over and over with a different colored sky. If the buildings got a bit darker too I think it would express the reason for the pupil getting so large better, know what I mean? Anyway, keep at it!

On an unrelated topic, I am very excited to have "Happy Three Years, Fred!" be my very first "Front Page, Daily First" solo entry. I just wanted to share that with someone since my friends and family don't really know Newgrounds, and so have no idea why I'm so happy about these awards. =)

Hey Bobly-

Sorry to hear about the computer issues. I hate when stuff like that happens. Any chance of recovering the data? Is it backed up?
Well I hope it goes okay for you, getting the system back to working condition and all.

Anyway, there's not been another date set yet for the deadline, but it's looking like late December or early January. So there's plenty of time left. Good luck!
(For anyone who didn't catch what's been going on, Mynamewontfitin, who puts this collab together, broke his arm and had to push the due date back until he could animate again.)

Response to: 5 Shades of Purple Collab! Posted October 9th, 2005 in Game Development

So how are everyone's entries going? Coming along?
I unfortunately am having issues with mine. I can't seem to decide on an art style. I don't like the one I picked, but don't know how to do much else. So I'm stuck. Also my setup scene is slow and ugly. I want to make it faster paced, but there's nothing to cut or speed up. Sigh. Ah yes, and my title logo is hideous as well, but I spent so long on it that it pains me to delete the darn thing and start over.

Anyways, good luck to everyone else!

It's a start! Here's my thought on the flash (of light).
The human eye is round, not flat. A gradient fill bar works very well for flashes when the object is flat, but round objects tend to need a little more work. Here, go to my site at FredtheMonkey.com and roll your mouse over the "Latest Update" button in the bottom corner. Do you see what I mean? If you took so much time to animate the eye Fbf, I think it would be worth the extra effort to Fbf a rounded flash for the eye. Trust me, it will look great. (It already looks great, I just mean the flash will look better.) If you need more help with how to do an effect like that, let me know.

I vote more creative plot. But heck, don't make it so-so! You've got plenty of time to put as much polish on it as you can and turn out something great. But yeah, I think the collab as a whole would be more interesting if they aren't all "Robots vs. Humans: The Future is Dark" toons. (I'm not saying they will be, but people like to watch new ideas that make them say "Hey I never would have thought of that! Cool!")
Let us know what you decide! (Or you can make it a surprise =P )

Seems to me that it's more rewarding to help people along, especially with things like Flash and animation. You give a little input, maybe some things you've learned along the way, and your reward is that you get to watch an even better end product after all is said and done, plus be helpful to someone. (And the nice words are always cool too.)

purple eye

the basic idea is that the human eye (even though its purple) is slowly mutating over time - look at the pupil

Wow, that's pretty sweet! It may be a little short at the moment, but if you can pull that off in a few hours, just think what you could do with two months! So I wouldn't give up. I bet if you check the Audio Portal and find some deep melody (I'm thinking slow and sweet maybe), then add in some fades with text, like it was an animated poem, heck it could stand alone for sure! Keep at it! (Of course, if you wanted to, it would still make an awesome preloader too.)
You could really go farther with this idea. Imagine images appearing and animatingin the pupil in between blinks. Just a thought!

Okay, just don't expect to win first prize BECAUSE it's 3D. The graphics might rock with their beautiful extra dimention, but if the animation isn't top quality, people vote elsewhere. Remember Shades of Red? =)
PS. I'm not picking a fight, so don't yell at me...

Here's a tip. Or actually, a few.
One thing that helps me is outside opinions. Talk to your family or friends. Mention the collab and the theme being Future. Suddenly they might say something that sparks you on a whole story that's better than you could have come up with on your own. Some of my best ideas come from things my friends say.

Another possibility is to grab a thesaurus. Not the crappy online kind, mind you, the good old fashion book with paper and words. Check out "Future" there, or maybe something you associate with Future. That can be a big help. You can sometimes follow one synonym to another to another and all of a sudden you've got a great idea.

Just a few thoughts, good luck.

Eh, don't feel bad about not getting mentioned for "co-author shoe-ins." It's really way too early to tell anything. Not only that, but ZekeySpaceyLizard has come in with the most votes, what, every time now? And he's not even on that list!
It's probably due to the fact that he (me too) doesn't usually show much in the way of previews. Then after the due date has passed, BAM, there's an amazing animation you never saw before. He certainly can't be overlooked... One day though, one day I'll defeat him... =)

Also Twinsen, Swift can do transparent, and bitmaps, and reflections. At least, from what I've learned so far. I don't think it's half bad for 3D if you know how to use it. I however, most certainly do not know how. Not yet anyway =)
