@Deathcon

I think you pretty much answered the question yourself. Its going to be very hard (if not impossible) to find someone to take on such a huge workload, especially if youre not going to disclose information about the project during developement.

For something of this scale I really think you need to work closely with someone you can trust, rely on and get excited with, as well as bounce off when dev times start to drag out. Theres really no point looking for someone at a place like Newgrounds, unless you find someone to work on some smaller projects with to build up a working relationship. That, or commissioning an artist would be the way to go imo!

Anyone else grab CoD:MW2 today? Holy shit, FUN! Ive only played probably half the single player so far and its absolutely insane, multiplayer is what I got it for though. Its everything I could have possibly hoped for really, what a great game! This things gonna ruin my final year at uni :)

What you see is pure FBF.
Take a look for your self...

You didnt use tweens but I wouldnt exactly call this fbf animation - people usually refer to frame by frame as drawing each frame manually, rather than moving each movieclip every frame.

The movement looks good but as other people have said it still looks a little jittery and stiff. Its really hard to make a run cycle look natural without (my definition of) fbf. It allows for little details like flapping cloth, little things like this give an animation a lot more feeling.

Saying that its still a nice walk animation, if its only gonna be onscreen for a few seconds of a movie I wouldnt sweat more time over it.

Unless youre aiming for perfection that is ;)

Phew, finally! Bubble Guinea Pop has been submitted and it works right! What a pain in the arse :)

See how you do, we made sure all the levels were pretty unique and different - there are new toys to play with up to like level 45. The Guinea pig minimizer is my favourite :)

Cheers Matt, I think thats pretty much the plan now. ive been looking at ihost and hostgator aswell, there are so many god damn hosting companies! How much does it really matter who I go with at this early stage?

I dont want to be facing downtime or anything but it looks like most of the basic packages are very similar. Shall I just pick someone reliable that I like the look of and go for it?

Response to: The Flash 'Reg' Lounge Posted October 28th, 2009 in Game Development

Glad im not the only one anticipating MW2! I havent had a tv for the last 3 months, so no PS3 for me :( Finally ordered a shiny Samsung 37", which is coming tomorrow. November 11th cant come fast enough!

Have there been any good playstation store or demo releases recently? I need something to tide me over :)

If it was down to me I'd go with a cheapish company like dreamhost with a view to move onto something more suited to the needs of a large flash site if it went well. Personally, what you have right now and goals make perfect sense to be ran from dreamhost or a similar company, but you need to make sure you've got the money and time to quickly upgrade. This is the problem with the internet, traffic is never guaranteed, your site can be hugely popular one day and the next it's gone.

I would personally recommend you go with dreamhost or hostpapa and take a look at a dedicated server provider (or vps with cdn) for the future in case it goes well, if it does then make sure you've got the understanding to quickly take a hold of it, if your site goes down for more than a day then you're going to lose your traffic, because the flash game site market really isn't a market that has loyalty, people will come and go as they please. You're not providing a unique service. (speaking from experience).

Cheers citric was hoping you'd stop by here.

Hostpapa looks great at $5 a month, but its a bit of a scare thats the only plan they do, wont it be a pain in the arse when i need better hosting? How reliable are they, how much traffic would I need before that $5 service isnt enough and ill need a dedicated server?

How about dedicated servers then, are mediatemple worth it or are you just paying for the "brand"? Ive also been recommended knownhost, any experience with them?

Cheers for the help guys!

Response to: Web hosting for a flash arcade? Posted October 28th, 2009 in Programming

Yup i know, thats why I just want to start with a basic plan. I have access to hosting at the moment but its shared and I want to get my own with full control.

HostPapa have some good reviews, any good?

Response to: Web hosting for a flash arcade? Posted October 28th, 2009 in Programming

I do very much like the look of Media Temple, how reliable is the grid service?

Thinking about it, a lot of the game traffic will be lifted from mochi, but dont want to limit myself to this at all, and I still want to be able to cope if I get any big traffic spikes. I also want to host a couple of other smaller sites on the plan but they shouldnt reach anything near the arcade.

The only problem about getting a dedicated server off the bat is the cost. I dont know how long it will take for me to get any decent amount of traffic, the majority of which ill be getting through self sponsorship of games, I imagine its a fairly slow process getting a decent stream of visitors.

I just dont wanna be paying $100's for dedicated hosting if I only get a few thousand hits in the first 6 months, which I imagine is likely!

Cheers for the help man

Web hosting for a flash arcade? Posted October 28th, 2009 in Programming

Hey guys, thought this would probably be the best place for me to post this.

Im looking at setting up what is essentially a flash game arcade. It will have other purposes, but flash games will be the focus point.

One of the first things I need to decide (along with a website name...) is which hosting company I want to go with. The only company Ive used before were Dreamhost, who had fairly good service but the uptime didnt seem all too great.

Initially there will only be a small amount of traffic, but I want the option to scale my hosting plan easily as I (hopefully) gain more visitors.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good companies or starter packages? i dont want to pay through the arse, but I would rather pay more for a faster and more reliable service than go for the cheapest option - I want this to be a quality site.

Cheers in advance!

Nice one! Few things:

Generally it looks good but the header is the first thing you see and it doesnt look great, or match the rest of the blog.

No Rss feed? Its a good way to get people to remember the site and come back, you should always have one on a site like this.

But yeah, nice idea for a site! You should get some authors to do interviews and guest articles, plenty of content is important!

Cheers for the great feedback guys, Im gonna get back onto the characters later this week. I started working on some environments and the general background styling today.

Im happy with the results, should look great with the plains scrolling at different speeds! What do you think of the environment styling, does it look nice, somewhere you'd like to be? It still needs work, grass looks a little flat, but feedback and critique will be greatly appreciated :)

Sounds great, make the decision whether to use micro transactions now rather than later - your game will do a lot better if they are in mind from the start of the development process.

Im actually just starting a similar project, I hadnt even thought about Mochi Coins for it before this thread though! Just maybe....

Yeah, if you look at the cutscene, where the black bars are should be where the gamescreen edge is. Its working fine on kong, something must be screwing it here though. Theres not a lot LongAnimals can do as Bored.com have to add their bullshit api before we can upload the game, and theyre all in bed now.

Oh well, itll get sorted soon enough, pissed off though :)

No idea where the game idea came from, it started out as a fragger ripoff!

Any ideas what the untitled game listed in upcoming games is, or who the authors are? Havent seen anything from power of three that has blown me away yet, although cave of wonders was great and time fcuk was fun for a while too.

Hope its a good one!

Turn Based Rpg Concept Art Posted October 18th, 2009 in Art

Hey, im looking for a little critique and advice for a new RPG im working on. For my final year project at University i am creating a turn based RPG similar to Final Fantasy, in Flash. Itll have cutscenes, sidescrolling sections between towns, with random encounters through a turn based combat system with various enemies along the way.

I have to program the game but as an artist I want the visuals to stand out in the game. I want the characters to be likeble and the environments and art style really appealing . Its fairly new territory for me, I havent done an RPG game before (or even human characters!) but I love games like Final Fantasy and Dark Chronicle for their art direction and style.

Anyway, here are the 2 main characters. No names yet, but basically the story is brother and sister on a journey to rescue their father from the baddies.

It would be great to get some critique on the character design, I want to nail these guys and make them as memorable as possible! Colours? Clothes?

Cheers! Ill probably be keeping this thread updated with more art and concepts for the game, I want this to be a beautiful game!

Work with an artist :)

I think making a living from indie Flash games is entirely possible, I know a fair few people doing it. I think one of the most important things you need is the drive to want to make it work. If you're lazy and unmotivated then you arent going to get anywhere, but if you can get into a state of mind where you really WANT to do it then theres a good chance you'll be able to do it with some hard work.

Personally, I cant think of anything in the world i'd rather do, when I wake up all I want to do it make games and when I go to bed all I can think about is making games. Im not working full time on it yet, ive just started my final year at uni, but I'm hoping to do it freelance full time after my degree. Maybe ive just been lucky in working with LongAnimals, but if your passionate and motivated about it and have a decent level of skill I dont think there is any reason why you cant make it work!

Saying that you're not gonna get anywhere if sponsors don't pay up, bored.com are doing my fucking nut in! GIVE ME MY MONEY >:(
