Mastermind was good but it's shocking that neither titanomachina or rageous 7 placed in the top five movies. What are you thinking voters?!

Fair do's, as an artist i'm always short of space in Flash particularly, once you've squeezed in all the god damn panels. I need to by a second screen in fact, i don't suppose anyone has any recommendations for a good 24"+ monitor? Screw forking out for an apple cinema display.

And what happened to that thing with tentacles and a laser beam ?

That was Enola, my final year project at university. I've graduated now but we are gonna develop it a lot further and release it on the web, it just needs a ton more work. I wanted to take some time off to make some other games and sort out my freelance career, but im fully intending to release it. only when im 100% happy with it though!

Response to: Ng London Meet VII 2010 Posted July 23rd, 2010 in General

Dammit, I REALLY wanted to make this meet but August 7th is the weekend after I move home from Uni and I need to find a house and its probably just way too hectic to even try it.

Might be able to make one day but thats pretty shitty, i think I want the full experience for my first meet!

Response to: Documentary & Cup Car Updates Posted July 23rd, 2010 in NG News

Sweet, donated! It'll be a real shame if this doesn't meet its target and gets scrapped - I'm tempted to just donate the $8k and have the film "In association with cocks" or something...

Anyway, I'm off to travel the country to find computers to vote for this car.

I'd love to make a game with you some time Xeptic, way too busy right now though! One day we must unite!

That animation was superb, trippy stuff!

Not sure how old this is or how many people might have seen it but the best animation I've found in a while is Cafe Allonge - some really amazing work and its pretty damn funny too!

I've found that exporting to .pngs can change colours quite a bit, which is a real pain in the ass. One colour looks perfect in Flash but viewed in Photoshop it gets over saturated and washed out, even though it has the same hex code. Same thing happens when replicating colours from Photoshop to Flash, its a real pain in the ass. I don't know a great deal about colour but I'm guessing its something to do with the differences in web pallettes or something.

Very happy with the new Sushi Cat's reception, will be interesting to see how it does on the app store :)

Cool, it doesn't make much different to me as the Movie section is still easy to find, if it brings more traffic to the site then great!

I like Luis' seasonal idea, there are times of the year like Pico day when I just want to watch animations, but to be honest I really don't care if I have to scroll down a few pixels.

I actually think citricsquids point about content being hard to find is something much more important that needs be addressed for Newgrounds to attract these new audiences that it is looking for.

As a newcomer to the website it really is hard to find content past the Front page and Flash portal. Sometimes If i'm having a lazy day I want to sit around watching animations, and Newgrounds is by default my first port of call. However, the Movies section is updated so infrequently that its surprisingly hard to find anything entertaining that I haven't watched before. I know there is content there, but I just can't find it! If i'm honest, I usually end up on Vimeo. The case is the same with Games, although the problem isn't as noticeable. As more and more high quality Flash games are being developed the Front Page can keep a steady flow of great new games.

Some of the recent changes have definitely helped address these problems, I'm sure the recommended submissions on submission pages helps generate traffic to my other submissions, but it doesn't solve the massive problem of actually finding content once its left the Front Page. For a start, we need a revamped searching system that lets users search for keywords as well as title and author.

Just my 2p!

Great to see some relevant discussion going on in here for a change!

I am actually totally with Xeptic on this one. I have no problem paying the 10% commission and did so on every game I sold last year, the guys at FGL do a great job and have made some of my games sell for MUCH more than they would have otherwise made. On the other hand though, I can't help feeling fucked over that the charge is now obligatory, even on performance based sponsorships.

If I post a game on FGL, and then a day later decide to go with a performance based deal offered outside the website and goes on to make $20k, they are actually legally entitled to 10% of that money. Even if the game never gets a single bid on FGL, as soon as I post it there they own 10% of it.

Quite honestly I blame developers who used the service and didn't pay the fee's for this change of terms. I have no idea how many people weren't paying FGL, but If everyone was just fucking honest and shared the money that FGL helped them earn then i think it would be a much smoother relationship.

At 7/3/10 04:17 PM, Toast wrote: Hey guys who have made flash games and gotten sponsorships.

Where do you search for sponsorship? FGL? I have used it once to search sponsorship for my puzzle but didn't get any offers. Would I get nice offers for a better and more action-packed game? If not, where else should I look?

Also, how much money did you make off your sponsorships?

Yeah as people have said, an original well put together puzzle game is likely to make just as much as any other game. These games appeal to a wide audience and generally have fun casual gameplay which is what a lot of sponsors look for. In fact its getting kind of ridiculous now, a lot of box2D puzzle games can sell for $10k+ and take only a few weeks to make. Other games like RPGs and action games that take a lot more work to make and probably appeal more to the hardcore gamer, often don't make as much money, which sucks.

As long as its produced to a professional level and has some original ideas then it should sell no problem.

As for selling your game, FGL is a good option but with the now obligatory 10% fee there is more risk involved with using the website. If you have a game that is going to sell like hotcakes then contacting sponsors by email might be a better option. The more games you sell the easier this becomes, I've now got a nice list of sponsors that I am on first term basis with. This also makes selling non exclusive licenses easy as simply sending off a few emails.

Response to: Sponsorship or Mochi? Posted June 25th, 2010 in Game Development

ill fight you to the death luis!

A non exclusive license is basically a site locked version of the game. It doesn't get distributed onto other sites, it just sits on the owners website with their own branding. The reason for this is that some websites want all the best games, but they don't want to advertise the primary sponsor websites on their own site.

You can sell as many of these site locked licenses as you want (unless you go for an exclusive primary license), but primary sponsors often want exclusivity for a period of time. Basically in your case, after 7 days non exclusive versions of the game can go live.

Response to: What exactly is a coder? Posted June 25th, 2010 in Game Development

Coders write code. Specifically coders (or programmers) use Actionscript to add interactivity or make games in Flash.

Response to: Sponsorship or Mochi? Posted June 25th, 2010 in Game Development

Yeah the ideal model is to go with both. Some sponsors won't let you include Ads in your game if they are the primary sponsor, others will. Not sure if you misworded your first post but I wouldn't expect to put ads in a non exclusive license, the whole point of these are that the sponsor is paying for a version of your game without any other branding in. I may be wrong though!

I used to dismiss ads as pocket money but they really are a great little source of income, Penguinz is still making $120 a month and it was released over a year ago now.

Personally I'd use CS3 over CS4 anyday, I find the environment a lot more intuitive and CS4 brought a load of new bugs and seems to crash more often. The fact that exporting transparent PNG's is fucked in CS4 but works perfectly in CS3 astounds me.

Ive never used CS5, but it just seems like a waste of £200 if features I regularly use are going to stop working.

Blergh.

Response to: game sponsorship Posted June 19th, 2010 in Game Development

I wouldn't be so quick to throw games up on FGL these days. With the new terms, as soon as you post a game they are entitled to their 10%. So, If you get an email from a sponsor offering $20k for a game without any bids on FGL, they are still LEGALLY entitled to $2k of that.

It is still a good option, but if you've got a killer game that sponsors will jump on then it shouldn't always be your first choice.

I watched Food, Inc last night. Every day I get more angry at the world. How the fuck does something like this happen? I don't think the problem is as bad in UK but i can only see us mirroring America increasingly. Did you know a single McDonalds hamburger contains meat from 1000 different cows which is then washed in Ammonia to kill E Coli before being "formed"? Tasty.

From now on I am only ever going to eat meat from the butchers and plant a garden to grow as much veg/herbs myself as possible.

If anyone is into food then PLEASE watch this, especially if you're in America. It'll open your eyes to the fucking shit people are being fed, and what you can do to change it.

On a related note, Rage Against the Machine at Download Festival last saturday was the best live experience of my life. They played brilliantly - as they did in 08' at Reading - but the atmosphere was simply unbelievable. I've never felt anything like that, and I've seen quite a few good live bands.

Very cool! My final project didn't turn out quite as well as I would have hoped... But my original intent was to carry on developing and "finish" it after Uni, so I'm not too bothered.

I'm actually planning on going freelance and doing Flash games full time - people say its hard but last year was very good to me and I think I can make it happen if I work hard! I just can't bring myself to go and work for an agency yet, all the fun gets sucked out of making games when youre being told what to do and I cherish the freedom that independence gives you.

My friend keeps showing me these viral web games that he's working on with £50,000 budgets and they're boring as shit - I want to make the games that I want to make while I have all this motivation!
