Response to: collision- 2 attached clips Posted January 31st, 2005 in Game Development

ok call me impatient but I really need some help on this so Ill post the question from the original thread here...

basically the bullets are created using attachmovieclip, so they have the name 'bullet'+_root.bulletname, with _root.bulletname being a variable that increases by one each time.

same deal with the baddies- so if i put a code into the 'baddie' movie clip to hittest for a laser it is

this.hitTest('_root.bullet'+any number )==true

so I need to know if there is someway to identify a clip just by the fact that it begins with '_root.bullet', regardless of whatever number follows it....

ok that was a very long winded explanation of what is essentially quite simple

I would really appreciate a bit of help here!

Response to: Censoship? Good or bad? Posted January 7th, 2005 in Politics

Im almost totally against censorship. The one exception is that people should never be lied to or misled through the public forum. Sadly we often get this in advertising and from politicians. As for someone saying the 'f' word, why not? Especially if it's being used to enforce a valid opinion....oh yeah and the encitement of hatred needs to be kept under control- but I guess its hard to encite hatred or prejudice without at least bending the truth...

Help me with some actionscript? Posted November 29th, 2004 in Programming

Im trying to make a top scrolling shooter, and Ive hit a stumbling block- probably simple, but I cant figure it out....

//declare variables
onClipEvent (load) {
speed=5;
_root.boltname=0;
}
//PLAYER CONTROL
//movement
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
//x axis
if(Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) {
this._x=_x+speed;
}

if(Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) {
this._x=_x-speed;
}
// y axis
if(Key.isDown(Key.UP)) {
this._y=_y-speed;
}

if(Key.isDown(Key.DOWN) && this._y<365) {
this._y=_y+(speed*3);
}
//SHOOTING
if(Key.isDown(Key.SPACE)) {
//add to variable boltname
_root.boltname=_root.boltname+1;
//attach new movie clip
_root.attachMovie("bolt", "bullet"+_root.boltname, 10);

}
}

basically the object "bullet"+_root.boltname gets removed every time a new one is spawned, so it probably isnt getting a unique id- but I cant understand why not! any help would be appreciated!

Response to: Reasons not to hit your child: Posted July 30th, 2004 in Politics

I'm sure there are areas of any county that are pretty dangerous to be in, I don't see why you would single out leicestershire, but anyway thats an irrelevant tanget.

Back on topic, I agree that hitting a child is wrong and mainly unnecessary but sometimes in the heat f the moment it is going to happen, and sometimes a child just needs to 'snap out of it'- this is a point when 'explaining' becomes difficult.'

Response to: Reasons not to hit your child: Posted July 30th, 2004 in Politics

Whats wrong with Leicestershire?

Seriously though, I think there are distinctions to be made between hitting a child and abuse. Sometimes as an absolute last resort, hitting a child is necessary. You don't have to actually hurt them, that is wrong, but a light tap on the arm is sometimes the only way to snap them out of a rage. this needs to be backed up with explanations and love too. The only real experience I have is living with my 8 year old brother since his birth but these are my opinions. I think it's also worth pointing out that mental abuse can be seriously damaging to a child aswell....

I love the may the Daily Mail were making such a big thing of it. I'm surprised they didn't blame immigrants. At the end of the day, if we're going to ban violent games, then it follows that we ban violent movies music and literature. So that means no more Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet. No more Ride of the Valkyries, no more classical pieces about war- which lets face it is most of them. Why do people need to pin the blame like this? I believe it was the parents of the killer that started this campaign (I might be wrong. I know that they at least claimed that he became 'obsessed' by it.) I know it's a cliche these days, but where were the parents? If we're going to ban the games we should imprison them for letting him play on it so much and for doing such a shit job of bringing him up.

Response to: Cause of 3rd world poverty Posted July 28th, 2004 in Politics

I think that we shouldn't underestimate the effect of corruption in underdeveloped countires. A lot of the time, only a fraction of the aid that we send through independant charities actually reaches the people. Sadly, corrupt governments seem to benefit the western powers so nothing is ever done about them.....If the US government really wanted to send it's army in to end suffering caused by inhumane regimes, they would have sent troops into most of the African nations a long time ago. Sadly there is nothing worth taking, even in North Africa where what was once rich farmland is being destroyed by the errosion of the sahara desert. Basically the whole continent is going to hell :(

Response to: world war one Posted July 24th, 2004 in Politics

Hey maybe splitting Germany up wouldn't have been the best option- no-one can ever really say. What I was trying to get at was that Germany should either have been totally destroyed as a nation, or totally rehabilitated, instead of the halfway house that left her in shameful suspension between these extremes. However, the people of Germany really didn't have that much national pride- Germany was a cluster of smaller nations not so long before and I don't think they would have minded going back to this state.

I am aware of the factors leading up to the war, and I won't deny that British expansion was a long term cause, Britain ruled a quarter of the globe- thats gonna piss people off. I still hold the opinion that other short term causes were used by Kaiser Wilhelm as an excuse to try and expand. Let me put it this way- Germany WANTED a war.

Response to: world war one Posted July 23rd, 2004 in Politics

Indeed there was considerable domestic pressure within the US at the time to join the war on the side of Germany, against Imperialism...

You act as if large debts to other countries after wars is a rare thing. We were in debt to the British because of the revolutionary war even through the civil war. And on another point, there's no possible way Russia will ever become a world power in the near future (within 100-150 years.)

I won't deny that Britain made huge lumps of cash out of the Civil War as long as you don't deny that it stinks. As much as America claims to have gone into war for ethical reasons, she was glad to sit back and make a hell of a lot of money, essentially from murder. Of course the British Empire was guilty of this too, because it was a bit shit.

Oh yeah and you'd be surprised at how quickly Russia may recover, they have all the manpower and natural resources they need to compete with America, all they need is for America to get occupied enough (say, a war in the middle east?) to let them recover, much in the way that America filled the commercial vacuum left behind by the British Empire. I think this is quite feasible within the next 70 years, let alone 150...

Versailles did pioneer in the creation of a actual world community though with the League of Nations, the prior experiment to the United Nations, that is the only credit I will truly give it.

Well the only expansions to European empires after WW1 were in the form of mandates, which had a deadline within which to be given independance. So that argument falls down under scrutiny. Economically, the restrictions were far too harsh. This was because Clemenceau insisted Germany must pay for the repair of France, which had practically been flattened. So the justification was right, even if it was totally unrealistic to expect so much. The sums suggested by Britain and the US were probably more fair, but then neither of these nations had suffered quite so much damage.

The military restriction were fair, what was unfair was the way that France took advantage of Germany's crippled armed forces to hijack coal mines to ensure payment of reperations.

In my opinion it would have been better to split Germany up, perhaps give parts to Poland (not just that politically incendiary sea access that was allowed), France, Czechoslovakia etc and scrapped reperations payments altogethor. This would have prevented the national shame that got Hitler into power- Germany had not existed for long as an actual nation anyway, and I doubt the people would have minded as much as they did about being totally raped an humiliated, as happened in reality.

The thing that really pisses me off about the World Wars is how much money America made out of it all. Britain is still paying back the loans made back then and most of her overseas businesses had to be sold off to the US at cut prices too. I guess this is the price of Imperialism. I only hope that America can learn these lessons before it is too late, it would only take a major war for the US to end up under the economic thumb of Chna or perhaps even Russia.....

Response to: world war one Posted July 22nd, 2004 in Politics

I studied the Great War at GCSE level (aged 15/16 so I'm no expert) and I tend to lean towards the opinion that Germany was looking for an excuse to expand, having missed out on all the best colonies to France and Britain. The other 'causes' were, in my opinion, circumstancial.

Leaving the causes of the war for a moment, what are peoples opinions on the Treaty of Versailles? Germany got treated pretty roughy, which helped get Hitler into power but on the other hand Germany's economic policy suggests that they intended to pay for the war with far greater reperations from Britain and France.....

Have you noticed that the physical issues of a woman actually managing to commit rape make things a little bit difficult? Come on, the line of thought that women are somehow incapable of malice went out the window 100 years ago. I think rape is a truly heinous crime but 50 years is just inhumane, not to mention the cost of it all to the taxpayer. More money needs to be focused on rehabilitation- we need to fix the problem, otherwise they'd probably be happier with the death penalty.

Correction: the threat existed before the Bay of Pigs.

Response to: Fidel Castro And Osama Bin Laden Posted July 17th, 2004 in Politics

But Castro isn't a communist though. He's a dictator with socialist leanings. And he had to make friends with Russia because of trade embargos and military threat from the US after the Bay of PIgs. From what you've said I agree that theyve been enemies for so long that they know no different, but the initial cause still seems to be that America is embarrased about Castro overthrowing an extremely corrupt, inhumane US supported dictatorship and the not letting them invade...

Response to: Fidel Castro And Osama Bin Laden Posted July 17th, 2004 in Politics

Can someone explain why the US government hates Castro so much? As far as I'm aware he isn't guilty of genocide and has done a pretty good job of running his country under the circumstances....is it because they're still embarrassed about the Bay of Pigs?
