Red christmas:

It'll more than likely be upwards of 40 degrees centigrade on Christmas day here.

I intend on doing as little as possible. I'll probably just get smashed and sit under the air conditioner.

Hey guys, this one time I drank like 7 bottles of vodka and I got so fucking maggot. Oh man, I had the worst hang over EVER! Then when I woke up I puked in a bucket, and then I did 10 gravity bongs with my puke! Then I fucking drank all my puke in one go, and chased it down with like 6 bottles of the most expensive wine that my mate's great grandfather's best friend's wife's friend had in her cellar. Fuck you, I know 6 bottles isn't fuck all, but I wasn't feeling too good at this point OK?

Anyway, I seriously, totally went out the back, filled a pool with my puke, then shit myself dead.

No worries chum :)

If you really wanna start getting into impulses, check out Acustica Nebula. They have a free version of Nebula 3 to download. Apparently it's the best thing ever. I don't think they have much in the way of amp and cab models, but there's alot of famous outboard that it apparently manages to nail 100%.

Things like reverb need to be horrifically optimised. I think you'd need a pretty decent grasp of assembly to do anything particularly useful.

As for synths...I still need to get my hands on a copy of Reaktor :]

Yeah, most VSTi's worth their salt will have a "midi learn" function.

Do you use a midi controller. The mod wheel is to the right of the pitchbend wheel. This wheel will allow you to control assignable parameters (usually something like LFO depth, or cutoff frequency)

Velocity modulation is kind of the same as the mod wheel, except instead of the amount of LFO or cutoff being controlled by your mod wheel, it is instead determined by how hard you hit your keys :)

You have to make the track with the VSTi on it the parent track, then all the tracks under it will go to the right parent track!
You helped so much, thank you!

Hahahaha wicked, congratulations man :D

You literally learn something new every day. I'll have to keep this particular piece of information in mind, as I'm hoping to fully migrate over to reaper at some point :]

Did I miss something on the track editor part?

Okay, forget everything I said. Try this:

1. Go "Insert" > "Virtual Instrument on new track..."
2. Select Edirol Orchestral
3. Go "Insert" > "New MIDI item"
4. Double click on the new item
5. Where it says "channel", change it from "all" to "1"
6. Draw in some notes
7. Change "channel" to "2"
8. You'll notice that your notes just disappeared. Draw in some new ones.
9. Change "channel" back to "1"
10. Look at that, the old notes are back!

Go to the menu bar > "insert" > "New MIDI Item"

Right click on your new MIDI item, and select "source properties"

Make sure "Send as channel" is checked, and select the appropriate channel.

That should do it :]

I decided to look online to find out how, it has something to do with Channeling the input to a certain track. I have absolutely no idea how to do this, and I tried many things. From setting the recording input to MIDI then changing the channel from there to a VSTi called MIDI Channeliser. Nothing.
I'm doing this all on REAPER, so if you know how to do this, please inform me. I feel that by doing this, I could save up alot of CPU and prevent my computer from freezing.
Thanks.

In reaper, on your midi track (or to the left of it, where I assume all the track options are), you should be able to set it to send midi data on any of channels 1 - 16, or all of them at once (also known as omni).

So go into Edirol Orchestral, go to the mixer, find out which instrument is on which channel, and set up 16 midi tracks in Reaper, with each of them assigned to the same instance of Edirol, but with ascending midi channel numbers.

I wouldn't bother using Channeliser...sounds like you're over complicating the process.

Hey, you could program a spring reverb using an entire set of modelled piano strings in the reverb tank XD. Then make it accept midi note data, so that it reverberates the incoming audio through the correct strings!

If I ever have a couple of days of spare time, and a busted upright piano, I might try doing this IRL. I don't think anyone has done this before? XD

Ugh, triple post:

Here's a wanky youtube video. Sounds pretty good!

I think this has actually piqued my interest in amp simulation again. I was never a big fan of Amplitube, Revalver, or Guitar Rig for distorted tones, but this actually sounds pretty natural. Maybe I can sell my PODxt now?

I've used IK Multimedia's amplitubeline to good success. It's a quality piece of software that's not terribly expensive. You get a wide variety of amp and speaker modeling that'll do a solid job. You'll need software with a decent VST host to run it. Or you can use audacity to record your computer's stereo mix and run the plugin standalone.

The last copy of Computer Music I picked up had a uncrippled, cut down version of Guitar Rig (or was it Amplitube?) for free on the cover CD. There's actually quite a few good amp simulating packages out there if you keep your eyes peeled and keep up to date with what's going on in the world of music software.

If you just wanted to model the cabinet, it's pretty easy to find free impulses of different cabinets (with most speaker and mic combos that you could imagine), and use a convolution program to apply them to your source. It's a bit of a dickaround, but the results can be pretty phenomenal.

If the OP wants to mess around with modelling software, try
this.

However, if you have a lot of unwanted noise (fans, next door neighbors, etc) I guess that would warrant a dynamic mic, or some good noise filtering.

I still believe that an SM57 or 58 would be appropriate for this situation. They sound great (I'm not a U2 fan, but Bono records with a 58), they're tough, they're easy to use, they're an industry standard, they're incredibly versatile, they handle massive SPLs, and they will sound much better in a bad room than a condenser will.

I've pulled amazing drum sounds with just a single SM57. One of the best mics for a guitar cab. Mike Patton has been known to use them for vocals, and hell, it's the mic on the presidential podium!

You pay that much that because it's an open ended game that is being continually updated and having new content added.

People spend their money on heaps of fleeting shit. Booze, drugs, partying, going out. Who are you to say that one form of recreation isn't as valid as another?

I get a kick out of WoW, and considering that I don't have cable, or even watch TV, I feel justified in spending a meager $15 a month on something that I enjoy doing.
